In the quarterly index, the number of hours paid had the highest rate in the time series

In May 2010, the number of hours paid to industry workers, in the seasonally adjusted series, changed by 0.3% compared to the immediately previous month, the fourth consecutive positive rate, having accumulated, in this period, increase of 3.1%. With these results, the quarterly moving average indicator increased 0.5% from April to May, the tenth consecutive month of increase, having accumulated rise of 5.7%.

It was the fourth consecutive increase in this type of comparison, with positive rates in all the fourteen areas surveyed. The main contribution to the average of industry was that of São Paulo (5.0%), due to the bigger number of hours paid by means of transportation (9.8%), non-metallic minerals (16.1%), textiles (12.8%), machinery and equipment (6.5%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (8.1%). It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions coming from the Northeast Region (6.7%), because of increases recorded by food products and beverages (10.6%) and footwear and leather articles (15.2%); Rio Grande do Sul (7.9%), due to the increase of machinery and equipment (16.1%), other products from manufacturing industry (18.5%) and means of transportation (20.3%); North and Central West Region (5.9%), due to the bigger number of hours paid by non-metallic minerals (29.9%) and metal products (20.4%); and Rio de Janeiro (9.7%), due to the subsectors food products and beverages (23.8%), metallurgy (39.4%), metal products (29.1%) and means of transportation (13.0%).

Among the areas, the most relevant positive contributions came from São Paulo (3.5%), Northeast Region (4.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.8%), greatly affected by the bigger number of hours paid by paper and printing

(11.0%), textiles (10.9%) and food products and beverages (3.6%); footwear and leather articles (17.5%) and food products and beverages (4.6%); machinery and equipment (10.0%) and other products from manufacturing industry (13.1%); and food products and beverages (11.5%) and metallurgy (27.5%).

In summary, indexes in May show a positive scenario for job market in industry, characterized by the continued increase of industrial employment and of the number of ours paid. The evolution of seasonally-adjusted indexes shows a sequence of positive rates, both in comparison with the immediately previous month and in the quarterly moving average indicator. Compared to similar periods in the previous year, the monthly index reached the highest rates in the time series ad the index accumulated in the year recorded accelerated increase. It is also worth mentioning that even considering the indictor accumulated in the last twelve months, the rates of which remained negative, there was reduction of the increase rhythm, as a result from not only the increase of hirings in the beginning of 2010, but also the low basis for comparison.

Value of payroll presents the fifth consecutive positive result

In May, the seasonally-adjusted real payroll of workers decreased 0.8% compared to the immediately previous month, after interrupting in April (-0.1%) the increase of 9.4% accumulated in the first three months of the year. It is also worth mentioning (despite their smaller relevance), the positive contributions of the North and Central West Region (11.4%), due to food products and beverages (10.8%), means of transportation (29.7%) and non-metallic minerals (36.2%); Rio Grande do Sul (9.6%), due to machinery and equipment (13.5%), means of transportation (16.3%) and food products and beverages (11.1%); and Paraná (10.4%), affected by the positive results of means of transportation (25.8%), chemical products (42.5%) and machinery and equipment (23.5%). On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from Rio de Janeiro (-14.8%) and Northeast Region (-6.8%), due, respectively, to the decrease of real payroll of mining and quarrying industry (-47.6% and -47.7%) and of the subsector petroleum refining and alcohol production (-53.5% and -38.5%), both affected by a high basis for comparison, due to the payment of profits and results in May 2009.
