As part of its 74th anniversary celebrations, IBGE is releasing today (May 28, 2010) the 69th edition of the Statistical Yearbook of Brazil related to 2009.

The publication presents a general view of the country, with information about territory, environment, demographic and socioeconomic aspects, arising from surveys and studies conducted by IBGE and other institutions dedicated to the systematic knowledge of Brazil.

The CD-ROM enclosed in it contains the information of the printed volume, and the historical series of the last 10 yearbooks published by IBGE. The publication is on sale at the virtual shop of the institute.

Exclusive information

The Yearbook is divided in seven sections, to make access to information easy. A highlight is the first section, “Territory Characterization”, which comprises data on characterization of the national territory that are only systematized in this publication. Among them we may find the historical series about the creation of Brazilian municipalities, boundaries with indication of border countries and the Atlantic Ocean and also detailed information on each municipality, such as the straight-line distance from capitals.

This section also brings data on natural resources and the environment, such as the number of local units and personnel employed in the recycling activity.

Results of the main surveys and indexes combined and organized

The second section addresses demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the population, with results like those of the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), which brings data on education, migration and families’ characteristics, among others. As to agricultural production, vegetal extraction, forestry, livestock and animal production, section three presents data from agricultural surveys, such as the Survey of Stocks.

Industrial activity is portrayed in the fourth section, which brings indexes about production and sales and data on electricity, gas and petroleum, among other information that may be found, for example, in the Annual Survey of Industry. The fifth section brings results of surveys of trade, transport, communication and other services, such as the Annual Survey of Trade and the Annual Survey of Services. Section six deals with indexes, prices, costs and salaries in the country, bringing information according to the National Consumer Price Index (INPC), for example.

Finally, the Yearbook reveals macroeconomic data, of Public Finances, Monetary and Financial System, the External Sector and National Accounts.

Each theme includes a glossary with the concepts investigated in the surveys and standardized references of the used sources. The subject index helps users locate information, and the reading guide directs consultation on the Yearbook.
