In January, industry increases in 13 of the 14 surveyed places

From last December to January 2010, in the seasonally adjusted series, the greatest advances occurred in Espírito Santo (5.6%), Ceará and Pernambuco (both with 5.4%) and Paraná (4.0%). Just in Amazonas (0.0%) industrial production remained stable. The average in the country was 1.1%.

In relation to January 2009 (series without adjustment), industrial activity grew in all areas, with highlights being Espírito Santo (48.5%), Amazonas (33.9%), Minas Gerais (28.8%), Bahia (23.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (20.9%), Goiás (19.8%) and Ceará (16.7%), which were above national average (16.0%).

The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, which for the total country changed from -7.4% in the closing of 2009 to -5.0% in January 2010, also showed signs of recovery, with all places recording rhythm increase between both periods. Espírito Santo (from -14.6% to -9.3%), Minas Gerais (from -13.1% to 9.2%), Amazonas (from -8.8% to -4.9%), Bahia (-4.8% to -1.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -7.2% to -4.3%) and São Paulo (from -8.4% to -6.1%) showed the greatest increases between December and January.

In January 2010, the industrial production of Amazonas was stable in relation to December 2009 (0.0%), seasonally adjusted, after having decreased 2.1% in the previous month. The quarterly moving average index was also practically stable between the quarters closed in December and January (0.2%).

 

In comparison to January of last year there was a growth of 33.9%, a much higher result than that of the last quarter of 2009 (4.5%), both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, although still recording a negative variation in January (-4.9%), continued showing a reduction in the decrease rhythm in the last three months: October/2009 (-11.2%), November/2009 (-9.7%) and December/2009 (-8.8%).

 

In the confrontation January 10/January 09 there was increased production in nine of the 11 surveyed sectors. In the formation of the 33.9% overall rate, the highest in the confrontation with the same month of the previous year since April 2004, the main positive impacts came from food products and beverages (46.7%), electronic material, communication material and equipment (32.5%), other transportation equipment (64.7%) and machinery and equipment (80.2%). In these sectors the highlights were increases in the manufacturing of syrup for beverage production; television sets; motorcycles and microwave ovens, respectively. There was decrease in the sectors of editing and printing (-16.1%) and chemical products (-31.4%), influenced especially by the decreases in items: CDs and videotapes, in the first branch, and photographic paper roll in the second.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of Pará grew 3.0% since the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, the second consecutive rise in this type of comparison, accumulating an expansion of 4.2% in these two months. The quarterly moving average index also showed growth in January (1.2%), keeping the upward trend initiated last November.

 

In relation to January 2009, the industry of Pará grew 5.8%, reverting the negative rate of the last quarter of 2009 (-4.8%), both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, although still negative, showed a reduction in the rhythm of decline between December 2009 (-7.3%) and last January (-6.2%).

 

The confrontation with the same month of the previous year shows, in January of this year, an increase of 5.8%, the second consecutive rise and the highest rise since November 2008 in this kind of comparison. Mining and quarrying industry kept, for the second consecutive time, the positive result of the total industry, when it grew 17.4%, pressed especially by the rise in iron ore. Manufacturing industry, in its turn, presented the sixth consecutive decrease, reducing its production in -3.4% and having as main negative impact the sector of basic metallurgy (-13.2%), influenced by the smallest production of aluminum oxide (calcined alumina). On the other hand, food products and beverages (25.1%) was the most relevant positive influence, exercised principally by the bigger production of soft drinks and crustaceans.

 

In January, the industrial production of the Northeast, seasonally adjusted, increased 3.7% in relation to the immediately previous month, signaling the sixth consecutive positive rate, accumulating an increase of 12.8%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index grew 2.0%, the eighth consecutive month of expansion, accumulating a growth of 10.7% in this period.

 

The industrial production of the Northeast increased 11.5% in the confrontation with the same period of the previous year, accelerating against the last quarter of 2009 (4.3%). The accumulated in the last 12 months decreased (-3.0%), after a decline (-4.9%) in December 2009, being on an upward trend since September 2009 (-7.3%).

 

The Northeast recorded the third consecutive positive rate with increases in seven of the 11 surveyed activities. The major positive impact on the formation of the 11.5% rate came from chemical products (40.3%), due to the increase in the production of unsaturated ethylene and low-density polyethylene. Next, petroleum refining and alcohol production (17.0%), due to the increased production of diesel fuel and gasoline; and basic metallurgy (34.0%), due to the increase in items copper bars, profiles and square bars, and carbon steel square bars. On the other hand, major negative contributions were made by food products and beverages (-9.0%) and cellulose and paper (-7.4%), due, respectively, to the decline in the production of crystallized sugar and toasted and processed cashew nuts, and cellulose.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of Ceará, seasonally adjusted, grew 5.4% in relation to the immediately previous month, the fifth consecutive positive rate, accumulating an expansion of 18.8% in this period. With this result, the quarterly moving average index increased 4.1% between the quarters closed in December and January, marking the sixth consecutive positive result, accumulating an increase of 14.1% in the period.

 

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industry of Ceará grew 16.7%, in a faster rhythm than in the last quarter of 2009 (4.7%). The accumulated in the last 12 months decreased 2.2%, after a decline of 3.8% in December, keeping the upward trend initiated in October 2009 (-5.9%).

 

In the monthly indicator, the industry of Ceará recorded increase for the third consecutive month. For the formation of the 16.7% rate, positive contribution was made by five of the 10 surveyed industrial activities, with highlights being textiles (40.2%), because of the increased production of cotton thread and cloth. It is also worth citing footwear and leather articles (50.4%), for the increased production of plastic and leather footwear, both for women; and chemical products (33.5%), due to the increase in items veterinary vaccines, paints and varnishes for construction. On the other hand, major negative impacts came from food products and beverages (-2.6%) and electric machines, appliances and material (-20.2%), because, respectively, of the decline in processed cashew nuts and transformers.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of Pernambuco, seasonally adjusted, presented a 5.4% growth in relation to the immediately previous month, after having decreased 2.5% in December. With these results, the quarterly moving average index increased 1.3% between the quarters closed in December and January, after accumulating a decrease of 0.7% in the last two months.

 

In relation to January 2009, the industry of Pernambuco grew 1.2% and reduced the growth rhythm in relation to the last quarter of 2009 (4.7%), both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, when changing from -2.9% in December to -2.1% in January, keeps the upward trend initiated in October 2009 (-5.1%).

 

The monthly indicator of industry in Pernambuco had the sixth consecutive rise, with growth in seven of the 11 surveyed sectors. For the formation of the 1.2% rate, the main positive contribution came from electric machines, appliances and material (154.2%), with a bigger production of batteries, influenced by a low basis for comparison. Next, it is worth mentioning chemical products (18.8%) and basic metallurgy (11.4%), due to, respectively, the increased production of paints and varnishes for construction and rubber of styrene-butadiene; and carbon steel square bars. The main negative pressures were recorded by food products and beverages (-9.4%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-38.3%), due to, respectively, the decreased production of crystallized sugar and alcohol.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of Bahia, seasonally adjusted, increased 2.5% in relation to the previous month, after having decreased 0.8% in December. With these results, the quarterly moving average index grew 1.8% between December and January, the eighth consecutive positive rate, accumulating a gain of 16.1% in this period.

 

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industry of Bahia grew 23.6%, in a much faster rhythm than that of the last quarter of 2009 (8.6%). The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, when it decreased 1.7%, recorded a less intense fall in relation to November (-7.5%) and December (-4.8%), keeping the upward trend initiated in September 2009 (-8.1%).

 

In the monthly indicator, the industry of Bahia presented growth for the fourth consecutive month, with positive results in seven of the nine surveyed sectors. The main positive contribution came from chemical products (62.1%), greatly supported by the increased production of unsaturated ethylene and low-density polyethylene. Next, it is worth citing the positive performances of petroleum refining and alcohol production (22.5%), due to the increased production of diesel fuel and gasoline; and basic metallurgy (56.6%), due to items copper bars, profiles and square bars, and carbon steel square bars. Inversely, both declines were marked by cellulose and paper (-9.3%), and food products and beverages (-3.9%), due, respectively, to the decreased production of cellulose, flour and pellets from the extraction of soybean oil and crude soybean oil.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of Minas Gerais, seasonally adjusted, increased 1.7% in relation to December 2009, after having accumulated a decrease of 1.2% in the two previous months. Still in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, when it recorded a 0.2% rate between January and December, completed a sequence of 11 positive results, but with a decreased rhythm against the previous months.

 

In relation to January 2009, the sector grew 28.8%, a much higher result than that observed in the fourth quarter of 2009 (6.8%). The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months remained negative (-9.2%), reducing the declining rhythm against the results of November (-16.3%) and December (-13.1%).

 

The expansion of 28.8% in the monthly indicator, the third consecutive positive rate, was a result of the growth both in mining and quarrying industry (59.3%), supported by the recovery of iron ore, and in manufacturing industry (24.8%). In this last one, positive results reached most (11) of the 12 surveyed activities. The main impact on the formation of the overall index came from basic metallurgy (72.7%), which showed increases in 88% of the investigated products, with highlights being the sharp increase in the production of carbon-steel bobbins and stainless steel bobbins. It is also worth citing machines and equipment (227.2%), which marked an atypical growth, reflex especially of the low base for comparison, due to the effects of the world economic crisis; followed by other chemical products (30.7%), automotive vehicles (11.2%) and food products (8.0%). In these sectors, the highlights were advances in the production of excavators, motor graders, superphosphates and oxygen; pieces and accessories for vehicles and cars; powder milk, meat and giblets. The only negative impact came from tobacco industry (-9.8%), because of the decreased cigarette production.

 

In January, the industrial production of Espírito Santo, seasonally adjusted, increased 5.6% against December 2009, a rhythm close to the observed in the previous month (5.4%). With this result, the quarterly moving average index, which grew 3.3% between the quarters closed in December of last year and January of this year, kept the upward trend initiated in March 2009.

 

In relation to January 2009, the industrial sector of Espírito Santo increased 48.5%, the fourth consecutive positive result, with a more intense rhythm than that recorded in the last quarter of last year (18.6%), both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, continued decreasing (-9.3%), but with a sharp rhythm reduction against the closing of 2009 (-14.6%).

 

In the confrontation with January 2009, the industry of Espírito Santo increased 48.5%, the sharpest rise since the beginning of the series, with positive rates in the five investigated branches. It is worth highlighting that this result was influenced by the low base for comparison, due to the effects of the international crisis. The atypical 158.4% growth of the mining and quarrying sector, mainly explained by the recovery in the item iron ore, influenced significantly the overall result. Manufacturing industry, which grew 24.0%, was pushed greatly by the two-digit rate of basic metallurgy (52.7%), reflecting the increased production of steel ingots, blocks and billets.

 

In Rio de Janeiro, the industrial production index showed last January an increase of 0.3% against the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. This was the fifth consecutive rise in this kind of confrontation, what led to an accumulated expansion of 6.0% in this period. Thus, the quarterly moving average index, when it grew 0.9% between the quarters closed in December and January, kept the upward trend initiated in March of last year.

 

In the confrontation with January 2009, the expansion was 10.7%, the second month of two-digit growth, with a result superior to the 4.5% recorded in the last quarter of 2009, both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. With this result, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months kept the recovery trend initiated in November of last year, reducing the decline rhythm, when it changed from -3.8% in the closing of 2009 to -2.0% in January 2010.

 

In relation to January 2009, there was a rise of 10.7%, supported in great part by the two-digit growth of manufacturing industry (13.7%), as the mining and quarrying sector showed a slighter increase (1.1%). In the first segment, eight activities showed positive rates, with highlights being basic metallurgy (68.5%), influenced not only by the increased production of carbon-steel bars and bobbins, but also by the low base for comparison in January 2009, due to the grant of vacations and the production interruption in important companies of the sector. It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions made by automotive vehicles (37.6%), beverages (24.8%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (6.2%) and perfumery, soaps and cleaning products (44.4%). Among those, the highlights were heavy trucks and buses; beer and draft beer; diesel fuel; and preparations for washing and cleaning.

 

On the other hand, among the four branches that recorded production decline, the most relevant negative influences came from non-metallic metals (-16.9%) and other chemical products (-8.0%), greatly pressed by the decrease in the production of granite and herbicides for use in agriculture.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of São Paulo showed an increase of 3.0% in comparison to December of last year, in the seasonally adjusted series, the seventh consecutive positive rate, accumulating a 15.5% gain in this period. With this result, the quarterly moving average index, when it grew 2.1%, kept the upward trend initiated in March of last year.

 

In the confrontation with January 2009, the industry of São Paulo increased 15.6%, the third consecutive positive rate, with an expansion rhythm much above that recorded in the last quarter of last year (4.3%), both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, remained negative (-6.1%), but reduced the decline rhythm against the results of the previous months.

 

In the monthly index (15.6%), there was generalized growth, with 17 of the 20 surveyed activities on the rise. The highlight was automotive vehicles, which increased 45.0%, pushed not only by the bigger production of automobiles, but also by a low base for comparison, given the grant of vacations in important companies of the sector. There were also positive impacts from machines and equipment (32.7%), metal products (62.9%), other chemical products (23.1%), rubber and plastic (27.8%), and electric machines, appliances and material (25.7%), influenced by, respectively: transportation companies and machining centers; parts and pieces for boilers; varnishes and insecticides; rubber and plastic pieces and accessories for automobile industry and tires; and transformers. Among the sectors that marked decreased production, the main negative pressure came from other equipment of transportation (-29.3%), especially because of the reduced plane production.

 

In January 2010, the industrial sector of Paraná increased 4.0% in relation to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, the fourth consecutive positive rate, accumulating a gain of 20.9% in this period. With this result, the quarterly moving average index, when it grew 3.2% between the quarters closed in January and December, has remained with positive rates since July of last year.

Against January 2009, the industry of Paraná increased 10.4%, the fourth consecutive positive rate, with an expansion rhythm slightly above the 9.8% recorded in the last quarter of 2009, both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The accumulated in the last 12 months remains negative (-0.7%), but with a clear reduction in the decline rhythm against November (-4.5%) and December (-2.1%).

 

In relation to January 2009, the rise was 10.4%, with expansion in 10 of the 14 surveyed sectors. The major influence came from automotive vehicles (91.4%), not only because the bigger production of trucks and automobiles, but also because of the low base for comparison in January 2009. It is also worth emphasizing machines and equipment (19.0%), cellulose and paper (13.0%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (11.6%), and food products (6.8%). In these sectors, highlights are, respectively, harvest machines and refrigerators; card paper; gasoline; and meats and giblets. On the other hand, the main negative pressure came from editing and printing (-32.8%), influenced especially by the decreased book production.

 

In January 2010, the industry of Santa Catarina increased 1.1% in relation to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, remaining since last September without recording negative rates. In this period there was an accumulated gain of 7.5%. With this result, the quarterly moving average index, which grew 0.9% between December and January, showed the ninth consecutive positive rate, accumulating 10.6% in this period.

 

In relation to the same month of the previous year, the sector showed an expansion of 7.9%, with an increase rhythm above the 3.8% marked in the fourth quarter of 2009, both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months remains negative (-6.3%), but with reduction in the decline rhythm during the last four months: October/2009 (-10.4%), November/2009 (-9.3%), December/2009 (-7.8%).

 

In the confrontation with January 2009, the industry of Santa Catarina increased 7.9%, the third consecutive positive result, based especially in the growth of seven of the 11 activities. The main impacts came from the atypical growth of 182.2% of electric machines, appliances and equipment, and machinery and equipment (33.3%), both influenced by a low base for comparison in January 2009. In these segments, the highlights are electric motors, in the first branch, and gas compressors for refrigeration and refrigerators in the second. On the other hand, among the four activities that showed fall, the most relevant negative contribution was made by automotive vehicles (-39.6%), pressed principally by the decreased production of body styles for buses and trucks.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of Rio Grande do Sul, in the seasonally adjusted series, presented a positive variation of 3.2% in relation to December, the eighth consecutive positive rate, accumulating a gain of 16.9% in this period. With this result, the quarterly moving average index grew by 2.7% from December to January, keeping the upward trend initiated in March 2009.

 

In relation to January 2009, the industry of Rio Grande do Sul increased 20.9%, the third consecutive positive rate, with an expansion rhythm above the 7.6% recorded in the last quarter of last year, both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months remains showing a negative rate (-4.3%), but with a reduction in the decline rhythm in relation to November (-9.9%) and December (-7.2%).

 

The industrial activity of Rio Grande do Sul increased 20.9% in the monthly indicator, with nine of the 14 surveyed sectors showing positive rates. The main positive impacts came from chemical products (113.9%) and automotive vehicles (46.6%), both influenced by the low base of comparison, due to non-programmed production interruption and the grant of vacations in January 2009. There were also the rises in furniture (86.8%), machinery and equipment (18.4%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (12.2%) and basic metallurgy (71.1%). In these sectors, the highlights are rises in the production of polypropylene; trailers; metal tables; metal silos; diesel fuel; steel bars. Inversely, food products (-3.8%) made the major negative contribution upon the general average, pressed principally by the decreased production of meats and giblets and powder milk.

 

In January 2010, the industrial production of Goiás, seasonally adjusted, increased 2.2% in relation to December 2009, after decreasing 3.0% in the previous month. The quarterly moving average index showed an expansion of 3.4% from the quarters closed in December and January, after a decrease (-0.8%) in December 2009.

 

In relation to January 2009, the industrial sector of Goiás presented an expansion of 19.8%, increasing in relation to the result of the last quarter of 2009 (4.4%), both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. The annualized rate, the index accumulated in the last 12 months, grew 2.1%, the only positive result among the investigated places, increasing in relation to the closing of 2009 (0.2%).

 

In the confrontation with January of last year, general industry grew 19.8%, the third consecutive positive result, supported principally in manufacturing industry (22.0%), as the mining and quarrying sector (0.1%) was practically stable. In the first segment, all activities showed positive rates, with highlights being chemical products (145.3%), reflecting greatly the increased production of medicines and fertilizers.

From December 2009 to January 2010, the regional indexes of industrial production, seasonally adjusted, had a generalized growth, reaching 13 of the 14 surveyed places, with highlights being Espírito Santo (5.6%), Ceará and Pernambuco (both with 5.4%) and Paraná (4.0%). The other increases were observed at: Northeast region (3.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.2%), São Paulo (3.0%), Pará (3.0%), Bahia (2.5%), Goiás (2.2%), Minas Gerais (1.7%), Santa Catarina (1.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.3%). The only exception was Amazonas (0.0%), which repeated the levels of the previous month.

 

In the comparison January 10/January 09, the country grew 16.0% and there were rises in all places, reflecting the increased productive rhythm and the low basis for comparison, due to collective vacations and non-programmed production interruptions in several sectors in January 2009. With increases above national average are: Espírito Santo (48.5%), Amazonas (33.9%), Minas Gerais (28.8%), Bahia (23.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (20.9%), Goiás (19.8%) and Ceará (16.7%). The other increases occurred in São Paulo (15.6%), Northeast region (11.5%), Rio de Janeiro (10.7%), Paraná (10.4%), Santa Catarina (7.9%), Pará (5.8%) and Pernambuco (1.2%).

There was evident increase also in the confrontation of the last quarter of 2009 with January 2010, both comparisons against the same period of the previous year: 13 of the 14 places showed rises, following the national index, which changed from 5.8% in the fourth quarter of last year to 16.0% in January. In this kind of comparison, Espírito Santo, which reinforces the increase of 18.6% in the fourth quarter of 2009 to 48.5% in January; Amazonas (4.5% to 33.9%) and Minas Gerais (6.8% to 28.8%) showed higher increases, whereas Pernambuco (from 4.7% to 1.2%) showed the only reduction in the growth rhythm.
