RESULTS BY SUBSECTOR

The subsector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with change of 12.2% in volume of sales in October, compared to the figure in the same month in the previous year, accounted for the main contribution to the overall retail trade rate (69%) – Table 3. This result, above average, can be seen as a consequence of the increasing purchasing power of the population, as a result of the bigger salary volume of employed persons (3.1% over October 2008, according to PME); it is also a result of the stabilization of prices in this subsector, which rose in terms of figures accumulated in the last 12 months by 1.4% (Meals taken out of the household), and were below the inflation measured by IPCA (4.2%). The accumulated figure relative to this activity in the first tem months of the year was 8.2% and in the last 12 months, 7.5%.

The activity Other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses segments such as department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc, with change of 9.1% in volume of sales compared to the figure in October 2008, accounted for the second main impact on the formation of the overall rate (10%). Favorable economic conditions concerning volume of salaries, the gradual restart of credit and the celebration of Children’s Day are the main factors which have contributed to the positive performance of the subsector. In terms of accumulated figures, the rate for the first ten months of the year was 8.7% and for the last 12 months, 7.8%.

The activity Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles, as the third main contribution to the overall retail trade rate, presented increase of 11.3%, compared to October last year, and accumulated rates of 11.8% in the year and 12.2% in the last 12 months. This result shows that the performance of this activity is still related to the movement of salary and credit volume, associated with the relevance of this type of product.

Furniture and household articles, with increase of 3.5% in volume of sales in relation to October last year, accounted for the fourth major impact on the performance rate of Retail trade. This result, the fourth positive one, after five months with falling rates, occurred mainly due to the improvement of credit, the fall of prices of the “white type” products (still reflecting the reduction of taxes) and of the positive evolution of salaries of the employed population. Considering figures accumulated in the year, the activity had a rate of -0.7% and, in the last 12 months, of 0.3%.

The subsector of Textiles, apparel and footwear, which increased in terms of volume of sales by 3.9%, accounted for the fifth main contribution to the overall retail rate. In terms of accumulated figures, results were -5.2% in the first ten months of the year and -5.7% in the last 12 months. The activity presented its first positive rate after 11 months with negative results, mainly due to price rises in this subsector.

Office, computer and communication material and equipment, responsible for the sixth major contribution to the formation of the overall rate, had increase of volume of sales (6.7%) considering the same month in the previous year and rates accumulated in the year (11.3%) and in the last 12 months (14.5%).  The fall of prices in this subsector, mainly of personal computers (-4.8% in the last 12 months – measured by IPCA), accounts, partially, for these changes.

The activity Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles, with increase of  13.3%, accounted for the seventh main contribution to the result of retail trade. The indicator accumulated in the year changed by 9.6% and the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months did by 10.2%. These results are a consequence of the improvement of economic activity, mainly with reference to the increase of income.

The subsector of Fuels and lubricants had, after 4 months of decrease, change of 0.6% in volume of sales in relation to the result in October  2008, having accounted for the eighth main contribution to the overall retail trade rate. In terms of performance accumulated in the year, the change rate of this activity reached 0.1%, and in the last 12 months, 1.0%. This subsector was affected, this month, by the rise of fuel alcohol prices which, according to IPCA, changed in October by 10.6%. So, this price rise, together with the continuation of demand, due to the restart of increase, accounts for such results.

Compared to figures in the previous month, extended retail trade had changes of -2.6% in volume of sales and of -3.1% in nominal revenue, both rates with seasonal adjustment. Compared to the same month in the previous year (without seasonal adjustment), changes were 11.2% for volume of sales and 10.9% for nominal revenue. Considering volume of sales, the sector had change rates of 5.1% accumulated in the year and of 3.9% accumulated in the last 12 months. For nominal revenue, changes were 6.1% accumulated in the year and 5.6% accumulated in the last 12 months.

In the last 12 months. The policies of reduction of taxes on products (IPI) has stimulated car sales, which had been affected by credit restraints since the last quarter of 2008.

As for Construction material, changes were -4.5% in the comparison October 09/October 08, of -8.9% accumulated in the year and -8.3% in the last twelve months.  Despite the occurrence of official measures as incentive construction industry and the increase of income observed, the subsector has not presented positive results for volume of sales yet.

For the seasonally adjusted volume of sales, nine of the tem activities surveyed had positive changes: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles and cosmetics (2.5%); Textiles, apparel and footwear (1.9%); Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles (1.8%); Fuels and lubricants (1.6%); Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.4%); Other articles of personal and domestic use (1.4%); Office, computer and communication material and equipment (1.3%); Construction material (0.8%) and Furniture and household appliances (0.4%). The only negative change was that of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (-15.8%) (Table 1).

In the comparison October 09/October 08 (without seasonal adjustment), all retail trade activities had increase of volume of sales, the rates of which, by order of importance to the overall result, were: 12.2% for Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco; 9.1% for Other articles of personal and domestic use; 11.3% for Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles and cosmetics; 3.5% for Furniture and household appliances; 3.9% for Textiles, apparel and footwear; 6.7% for Office, computer and communication material and equipment; 13.3% for Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles  and 0.6% for Fuels and lubricants (Table 3).
