In September 2009, Brazilian industrial production increased by 0.8% in relation to August, with 12 of the 14 surveyed areas recording increase. Above the national index were: Espírito Santo (3.3%), Goiás (2.4%), Ceará (2.1%), the Northeast region (1.8%), Santa Catarina (1.7%), Minas Gerais (1.4%) and Amazonas (1.2%). Rio de Janeiro (0.7%), São Paulo (0.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.4%), Bahia (0.2%) and Pernambuco (0.1%) also recorded increase. Production in Pará remained stable (0.0%), whereas that in Paraná (-2.9%) recorded decrease in comparison to August. Still in the seasonally adjusted series, 13 of the 14 areas presented positive results in the third quarter of 2009 compared to the immediately previous quarter, with Espírito Santo (13.4%) and Amazonas (8.3%) achieving the highest rates, whereas Ceará (-1.4%) was the only area to present decrease in comparison to the second quarter.

Industrial activity decreased by 7.8% in comparison to September of last year, with 13 of the 14 surveyed areas recording decline. The only area with increased production was Goiás (7.3%), mostly reflecting expansion in the sector of chemical products. With a two-digit shrinkage are Minas Gerais (-12.6%) and Paraná (-10.3%). Other reductions, more intense than the average in industry (-7.8%), were observed in Pará (-9.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-9.2%), Santa Catarina (-8.1%) and São Paulo (-7.9%). The following areas presented falls below average: Pernambuco (-1.4%), the Northeast region (-4.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.5%), Ceará (-4.7%), Bahia (-4.8%), Espírito Santo (-6.9%) and Amazonas (-7.0%).

On quarterly bases, there are retractions in almost all areas surveyed in 2009, when compared to the same period of the previous year. Goiás was the only area to reverse the falls in the first (-6.9%) and second quarters (-2.4%), recording increase of 4.9% in the third quarter. From the second to the third quarter of 2009, most (11) of the 14 areas recorded a slower rhythm of fall. This reduction was mainly significant in Espírito Santo and Amazonas, where, among the analyzed periods, the rate changed respectively from -27.0% to -12.7%, and from -14.2% to -6.4%. Considering the closing of the first semester of 2009, all areas but Pará showed a rhythm increase.

In the indicator accumulated in the year, compared to the same period of 2008, the 14 investigated areas indicated retreat, with Espírito Santo (-23.5%) and Minas Gerais (-18.8%) standing out. With a higher intensity of fall than national average (-11.6%) are also: São Paulo (-12.4%) and Amazonas (-13.3%). Regional results confirm the generalized decrease profile in 2009, mainly because of the less dynamic exports and the reduced production of durable consumer and capital goods. With retraction inferior to average are: Goiás (-1.1%), Paraná (-5.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-6.6%), Ceará and Pernambuco (both with -6.8%), Pará (-8.1%), the Northeast region (-8.4%), Bahia (-9.0%), Santa Catarina (-11.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-11.5%).
