In June, retail sales increase by 1.7%. Revenue has a rise of 2.1%

The volume of retail sales increased by 1.7% in June, and nominal revenue presented a rise of 2.1%. The rates reflect a comparison with May in the seasonally adjusted series. Regarding June 2008, the volume of sales and the nominal revenue increased by 5.6% and 9.6%, respectively. In the first six months of the year those indicators registered a rise of 4.4% and 9.9%, while in the last 12 months the volume of sales and revenue accumulated 6.2% and 12.2%, respectively.

From May to June the extended retail trade obtained higher rates than retail trade: 6.5% for volume of sales and 7.4% for revenue. In comparison to June 2008, the sector registered a rise of 10.2% in volume of sales, and 9.8% in nominal revenue. In the first six months of the year and in the last 12 months, the rates were 3.9% and 5.0% for volume of sales, and 5.8% and 8.7% for nominal revenue.

 

Positive change in six activities

In the volume of sales seasonally adjusted, six surveyed activities obtained positive change: Office, computer, and communication material and equipment (15.6%); Vehicles, motorcycles, parts, and pieces (11.1%); Textiles, apparel and footwear (10.1%); Furniture and household appliances (3.3%); Other articles of personal and domestic use (2.7%); Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.9%); Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles and cosmetics (-0.1%); Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles (-0.7%); Construction material (-1.9%); and Fuels and lubricants (-2.7%).

In comparison to June 2008 (series without adjustment), five of the 10 activities presented positive change: Office, computer, and communication material and equipment (22.3%); Vehicles, motorcycles, parts, and pieces (20.8%); Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (12.6%); Other articles of personal and domestic use (11.5%); Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (8.2%); and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles (4.5%). Textiles, apparel and footwear and Furniture and household appliances presented negative results of -1.0%; Fuels and lubricants, -1.5%; and Construction material-7.8%.

In retail trade, the subsector Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco presented a change of 8.2% in volume of sales in June, in comparison to the same month of the previous year, and was the main responsible for the increase in the sector. Considering results accumulated in the semester and in the last 12 months, the subsector presents growth of 6.8% and 6.0%, respectively.

Other articles of personal and domestic use, encompassing department stores, optician, jewelry stores, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc., accounted for the second main contribution to the rate, with 11.5% change in the volume of sales. Considering results accumulated, the rate for the first semester of the year was of the order of 9.5%; and for the last 12 months, of 10.3%. Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles, with the third main contribution, presented growth of 12.6% and accumulated rates of 11.8% in the semester, and of 12.8% in the last 12 months.

Office, computer, and communication material and equipment presented increase of 22.3% in volume of sales over June 2008, and accumulated rates of 16.7% in the semester and 26.0% in the last 12 months. It is the activity with the highest level of increase this month. The activity Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles grew by 4.5% in comparison with May, by 8.6% over the same month of 2008, and by 9.5%for the last 12 months.

The subsector Textiles, apparel and footwear, that reduced the volume of sales by -1.0% over the same month in the previous year, was responsible for the least important negative contribution to the overall retail trade rate. Next, Fuels and lubricants presented a retraction of -1.5% in volume of sales in comparison to June 2008. In terms of performance accumulated in the year, the change rate reached 2.2%, and in the last 12 months, 6.2%. The activity Furniture and household appliances, with a fall of -1.0% in volume of sales regarding June of last year, accounted for the main negative contribution to the performance rate of retail trade. In the accumulated result of the year the rate was -2.3%, and in the last 12 months, 5.0%.

Regarding the previous month, extended retail trade increased by 6.5% for volume of sales and 7.4% for nominal revenue, both rates with seasonal adjustment. In comparison to the same month of the previous year (with no seasonal adjustment), changes were 10.2% for volume of sales and 9.8% for nominal revenue. Considering the index accumulated in the semester and in the last 12 months, the sector presented change rates of 3.9% and 5.0% for volume of sales, and of 5.8% and 8.7% for nominal revenue of sales, respectively.

The activity Vehicles, motorcycles, parts, and pieces registered an increase of 20.8% in comparison with June 2008, accumulating changes of 5.3% and 4.2% in the semester and in the last 12 months, respectively. Concerning Construction material, changes were -7.8%, -10.2% in the index accumulated in the semester, and -2.4% in the last 12 months. 

Positive results in 24 of the 27 Federative Units

Among the 27 Federative Units, just three presented negative results compared to June 2008: Espírito Santo (-2.5%), Tocantins (-2.2%), and Distrito Federal (-1.3%). The main rises in volume of sales took place in Piauí (19.4%), Sergipe (15.2%), Ceará (11.0%), Maranhão (8.2%), and Roraima (7.9%). São Paulo (7.2%), Rio de Janeiro (4.2%), Paraná (6.3%), Minas Gerais (3.7%), and Bahia (7.0%) had leading roles in the formation of the retail trade rate.

As to extended retail trade, the main rises in sales occurred in Piauí (25.9%), Tocantins (22.6%), Sergipe (21.0%), Ceará (17.9%), and Maranhão (17.6%). In terms of impact on the overall result of the sector, the highlights were the states of São Paulo (11.1%), Rio de Janeiro (10.0%), Minas Gerais (9.7%), Paraná (8.2%), and Bahia (11.3%). Still by Federative Unit, seasonally adjusted results for volume of sales indicate 21 states with positive change in comparison to May, being the highlights Amapá (3.3%), Maranhão (3.0%), Rio de Janeiro (3.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.9%), and Sergipe (2.3%).

 

Second quarter had a better performance than the first

 

The 5.2%-change of retail trade in the second quarter, in comparison to the same period of 2008, was above the change in the first quarter (3.7%) and below the change in the last quarter of last year (6.0%). Comparison between the first two quarters of 2009 shows rises for Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (from 4.0% to 9.7%); Office, computer, and communication material and equipment (15.0% to 18.2%); and Other articles of personal and domestic use (6.5% to 12.3%). The following subsectors presented falls: Fuels and lubricants (from 3.1% to 1.3%); Textiles, apparel and footwear (-6.6% to -7.1%); Furniture and household appliances (1.3% to -5.7%); Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (12.3% to 11.3%); and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles (12.3% to 3.7%). In the extended retail trade, the change rate of the second quarter was 4.2%, higher than that of the first quarter (3.7%). 

 

Result by semester is the worst since 2004

There was increase of 4.4% in the first semester, in comparison to the same period of 2008. This figure is below not only the result of the second semester of 2008 (+7.9%), but below the whole historical series of the Monthly Survey of Trade since 2004.
