In the same period, 1.2 billion chickens and 7.3 hogs and pigs were slaughtered. The establishments surveyed acquired 4.7 billion liters of milk and produced 563.6 million dozens of eggs, being 32% in São Paulo.

 

In the second quarter of 2008, 7.576 million cattle head were slaughtered, pointing to decrease of 2.2% in the volume slaughtered compared to the second quarter of 2007, and to increase of 4.7% compared to the first quarter of 2008.

 

From the total number of animals slaughtered in the second quarter of 2008, 50.7% were bulls, 35.6% were cows, 13.7% calves and only 0.1%, young bulls.

 

Total cattle slaughter accumulated in 2008 (15.7 million head) is 5.6% below the amount obtained in the same period in 2007; this reflects the scarce supply of animal for slaughter, a phenomenon which has been observed since the previous year.

 

Volume of slaughtered chickens increases 11.3% compared to Q2 2007

 

In the second quarter of 2008 were slaughtered 1.193 billion units of chickens in the establishments which usually undergo some kind of inspection (at federal, state or municipal level). The volume slaughtered increased 11.3% compared to the second quarter of 2007 and 0.4% compared to the same quarter of 2008.

 

The figure for slaughter of chickens accumulated in the year is 2.383 billion head, 11.9% above the amount obtained in the same period last year. Almost all the slaughtered material (96.2%) is done under federal inspection.

 

Slaughter of hogs and pigs increased 6.1% compared to Q1 2008

 

In the second quarter of 2008 there was the slaughtering of 7.253 million units of hogs and pigs, pointing to increase of the number of animals slaughtered by 6.7%, compared to the second quarter in 2007, and by 6.1%, compared to the first quarter of 2008.

 

The volume of pork traded abroad had significant increase (72.6%) in the second quarter of 2008, compared to the immediately previous quarter (47.6%). This change caused the average price by metric ton of the product to rise from US$ 1,940 to US$ 2,884 (Secex).

 

Acquisition of milk increased 17% compared to Q1 2008

 

In the second quarter of 2008 a total 4.695 billion liters of milk were acquired by the establishments surveyed. Compared to the second quarter of 2007, there was increase of 17% in acquisition; compared to the first quarter of the same year, there was decrease of 5.7%.

 

In terms of the milk processed by these establishments in the period surveyed, results show a total 4.675 billion liters, that is, increase of 17% compared to the second quarter of 2007 and decrease of 5.9% compared to the first quarter of 2008.

 

Acquisition of leather fell by 7.1% compared to the same period in 2007

 

The acquisition of leather in the second quarter of 2008 was 9.989 million pieces, with fall of 7.1% when compared to the same period in 2007, and with increase of 3.1% when compared to the first quarter of 2008. São Paulo is the main state in terms of leather acquisition, with 22.2% of national purchases, followed by Rio Grande do Sul, with about 11.0%.

 

The reported amount of tanned leather was 9.791 million units, with decrease of 8.6% compared to the second quarter of 2007 and increase of 0.2% compared to the first quarter of 2008.

 

Production of hen’s eggs increased by 4.8% compared to Q2 2007

 

In the second quarter of 2008 were produced 563.607 million dozens of hen’s eggs, with hikes of 4.8% compared to the second quarter of 2007 and of 0.2% compared to the first quarter of 2008. São Paulo is the main producing state, with over 32.0% of the national amount. It is worth mentioning that, in the second quarter of 2008, the production of hen’s eggs had significant increase (5.5%) compared to the same period in 2007.
