In the seasonally adjusted month/previous month comparison, the rate was only below that of May 2004 (1.0%). In comparison with July/07 and in terms of the rate accumulated in the year, both indicators reached 2.8%. The real payroll of industry workers increased 1.3% from June to July (seasonally adjusted series). The increments compared to July/07 and accumulated in the year were 6.9% and 6.6%, respectively.

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

EMPLOYED SALARIED PERSONNEL

 

 


In July, the industrial employment increased by 0.7% in relation to the previous month, in the series seasonally adjusted, major increment since May 2004 (1.0%), and registered the second consecutive positive rate, accumulating gain of 1.3% in this period.  With these results, the quarterly moving average index increased by 0.4% between the quarters closed in June and July, differently than the stability observed since December 2007.

 


In the comparison with July 2007, the increase was of 2.8%, maintaining a sequence of twenty-five positive rates.  In the index accumulated in the seven first months of the year, the gain was also of 2.8%.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months, which has an upward trend since October 2006, was stable between June and July (2.9%).

 


In the monthly index (2.8%), the number of workers increased in eleven among fourteen surveyed areas, especially São Paulo (4.3%), Minas Gerais (6.6%) and North and Central West Region (2.8%).  In the first area, the main positive contributions came from machines and equipment (10.4%) and chemical products (21.3%); in the second area, the results of food products and beverages (12.3%) and transportation (13.4%) were the most relevant ones; and in the third area, the highlights were food products and beverages (5.2%) and non-metallic minerals (21.0%).  On the other hand, reductions were observed in Pernambuco (-4.4%), Santa Catarina (-1.1%) and Northeast Region (-0.3%).

 


In national level, the employed personnel increased in thirteen among eighteen sectors, in the comparison with July 2007, with machines and equipment (12.3%), transportation (9.6%), electronic material and communication equipment (11.6%) and chemical products (11.1%) answering for the most important positive results.

 

On the other hand, the most significant negative contributions came from footwear and leather articles (-9.8%), apparel (-4.7%), textiles (-6.2%) and wood (-8.2%).

 


In the index accumulated in the year, the level of industrial employment was 2.8% higher than in the same period of the previous year.  This result was supported by the growth in eleven areas and twelve segments.  In the total of the country, the most relevant positive results, in terms of participation, came from machines and equipment (12.6%), transportation (10.6%), electronic material and communication equipment (12.8%) and food products and beverages (2.9%).  Among the areas, São Paulo and Minas Gerais (both with 4.2%) and North and Central West Region (3.9%) brought the most important positive contributions, while Santa Catarina (-0.5%) brought the main negative result.  Among the segments, the most significant negative values in the total of the country were observed in footwear and leather articles (-10.7%), apparel (-5.0%), textiles (-5.5%) and wood (-7.2%).

 


In summary, based on the evolution of the quarterly moving average index, the level of employment, which had a stable level during 2008, registered a positive change of 0.4% in July.  This result is related to the growth of production which, in this same index, increased by 0.8% between the quarters closed in May and June and increased the rhythm of expansion in July (1.1%).

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

 

 


In July, the number of hours paid to the industrial workers increased by 0.9% in relation to June, in the series seasonally adjusted, second consecutive positive rate, accumulating gain of 1.5%.  With these results, the quarterly moving average index had a positive change of 0.3% between the quarters closed in June and July, after a stable result between May and June (0.0%).

 


The comparison with the same month of the previous year brought a value of 2.7%, twenty-sixth consecutive positive percentage.  The index accumulated in the year also brought hike of 2.7%.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months, in an upward trend since September 2006, was stable between June and July (2.6%).

 


In the monthly index, the number of hours paid increased by 2.7%, supported mainly, by the increase observed in twelve among fourteen areas and in twelve among eighteen segments surveyed.  In the analysis by sectors, the main positive results came from machines and equipment (13.0%), transportation (11.7%) and electronic material and communication equipment (11.3%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-10.5%), apparel (-5.3%) and wood (-7.7%) brought the main negative contributions.

 


Also in the same comparison, the areas with the most important performances in the national result were São Paulo (4.0%), Minas Gerais (7.0%) and North and Central West Region (2.4%).  In São Paulo, eleven activities surveyed increased the number of hours paid, especially machines and equipment (10.4%), transportation (10.3%) and electronic material and communication equipment (14.2%).  In the industry of MG stood out food products and beverages (9.3%) and transportation (20.1%); and in the North and Central West Region, food products and beverages (5.3%) brought the main result.  On the other hand, the most significant negative values on the overall result came from Pernambuco (-5.2%), mainly due to the decrease in food products and beverages (-8.5%).

 


In the period accumulated January-July, the increase of 2.7% was a consequence, mainly, of the increases in eleven areas and twelve segments.  The major positive results, by area, came from São Paulo (4.0%), Minas Gerais (4.7%) and North and Central West Region (3.9%), while Espírito Santo (-1.9%) brought the main negative result.  In the analysis by sectors, the main increases came from machines and equipment (13.3%), transportation (12.0%) and electronic material and communication equipment (11.5%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-11.8%) and apparel (-5.0%) stood out as the most relevant negative results.

 

 

REAL PAYROLL

 

 


In July, the value of the real payroll of the industrial workers, in the seasonally adjusted index increased by 1.3% in relation to the immediately previous month, third consecutive positive rate, accumulating gain of 2.3% in the period.  With these results, the quarterly moving average index increased by 0.7% between the quarters closed in June and July, reversing the negative change (-0.2%) in June.

 


In the comparisons with similar periods of the previous year, the results continued positive: 6.9% in the monthly index and 6.6% in the index accumulated in the year.  In the index accumulated in the last twelve months (6.4%), the rhythm of growth was slightly above the rate of June (6.3%).

 


The value of the real payroll in July increased by 6.9% in the comparison with the same month of the previous year, with positive rates in fourteen areas surveyed.  The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (7.4%), due to the salary increment in chemical products (25.9%), transportation (10.3%) and non-metallic minerals (18.9%).  Following came Minas Gerais (11.4%), due to transportation (20.2%) and non-metallic minerals (21.1%); Paraná (10.1%), as a consequence of machines and equipment (30.9%) and food products and beverages (15.0%); and Rio Grande do Sul (5.6%), due to the increase in the value of the payroll in machines and equipment (27.5%) and transportation (29.3%).

 


In the analysis by sectors, also in the monthly index, the real payroll increased in thirteen among eighteen segments surveyed.  The major positive results came from transportation (11.9%), chemical products (16.6%), machines and equipment (8.3%) and non-metallic minerals (18.2%). On the other hand, the most relevant negative results came from paper and printing (-3.6%), footwear and leather articles (-4.3%) and textiles (-2.9%).

 


The index accumulated in the year increased by 6.6% with hike in all the areas.  The major positive results came from São Paulo (7.5%), Minas Gerais (8.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (5.9%).  In these areas stood out, respectively: transportation (14.2%) and chemical products (15.8%); transportation (15.7%) and basic metallurgy (7.7%); and metal products (35.8%) and machines and equipment (23.4%).

 


In the analysis by sectors thirteen activities increased the value of the overall wages.  The main positive results came from transportation (13.7%), machines and equipment (8.7%), metal products (12.4%) and chemical products (9.3%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-6.8%) and paper and printing (-3.2%) brought the main wage reductions.
