In July, industrial production increased in 10 among 14 areas surveyed

From June to July, the regional indexes of industrial production, in the seasonally adjusted series, increased in 10 among 14 areas surveyed.  Goiás (3.1%), Pará and Amazonas (2.3% each one), Santa Catarina, Paraná and Espírito Santo (2.1% each one), Minas Gerais (1.8%) and Bahia (1.5%) had results above the national average (1.0%).  Pernambuco (-3.2%), Ceará (-1.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.1%) and Northeast Region (-1.0%) had negative results; while Rio de Janeiro (0.6%) and São Paulo (0.3%) grew below the average.

 

 

In the comparison with July 2007, the indexes were mainly positive, with 13 areas recording increase in the production.  It is worth mentioning the influence of one more working day in July 2008.  The main highlights, in this comparison, in terms of magnitude of the rate, were Goiás (17.6%), Paraná (15.1%), Espírito Santo (14.3%), São Paulo (10.9%), Pará and Minas Gerais (both with 8.6%) and Amazonas (8.5%), with growth above or equal to the national average (8.5%). Ceará (6.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (6.2%), Rio de Janeiro (5.4%), Santa Catarina (3.6%), Pernambuco (1.7%) and Bahia (0.5%) also had positive results, although below the national average.  The Northeast Region (-0.3%) was the only area with decrease in July.

 

 


 

 

 

 

The trend of acceleration registered by the national industry during 2008, with a rate of average growth of 6.2% in the first semester, changing to 8.5% in July, was followed by 10 among 14 areas surveyed, especially Goiás, which changed from an average growth of 11.9% in the first semester to 17.6% in July, Paraná (from 11.2% to 5.1%) and Ceará (from 2.8% to 6.3%).


In the index accumulated in the year, all the areas had positive indexes, especially Espírito Santo (15.8%), Goiás (12.8%), Paraná (11.8%) and São Paulo (10.0%), all with two-digit rate performances.  In these areas stood out machines and equipment (investment), exporting sectors of commodities, especially metallic, automobile industry (trucks, automobiles and pieces), agriculture industry (mainly of the Central West) and the construction sector.

 


Amazonas

 


In July the industry increased by 2.3% in relation to June 1 , fourth consecutive positive rate, period in which it accumulated a gain of 4.5%.  In the comparisons with 2007, the results continued positive: 8.5% in relation to July and 7.6% in the index accumulated in the seven first months of the year.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months (rate annualized), which had reduced the growing rhythm between May (8.4%) and June (8.1%), accelerated again in July (8.7%).

 


In the monthly comparison (8.5%), the production has been increasing for 14 consecutive months, with 6 among 11 activities bringing expansion.  The main positive contributions came from other transport equipment (28.6%), edition and printing (42.0%), food products and beverages (8.5%) and medical products, appliances and equipment (28.9%).  On the other hand, electronic material and communication equipment (-1.7%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-7.5%) brought the most important negative results, influenced mainly by the items TV sets and gasoline.

 


In the index accumulated in the year (7.6%), five segments had positive rates, standing out, in terms of participation on the industrial average, other transportation equipment (24.9%), especially motorcycles; edition and printing (53.8%), where stood out DVDs; and electronic material and communication equipment (8.0%), where stood out mobile phones.  Metal products (-19.1%) and machines and equipment (-14.0%) brought the most significant negative results, influenced by the decreases in the production of shaving equipment and microwave ovens.

 

 


Pará

 


In the comparison with June, the industrial production increased by 2.3% in July, third consecutive positive rate, accumulating in this period a gain of 7.4%.  In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industrial sector increased by 8.6%, eighth consecutive positive rate.  The index accumulated January-July increased by 6.5%, result above the one observed in the closure of the first semester (6.1%).  In the index accumulated in the last 12 months, the growth of 4.5% maintained an ascending trend in the rhythm of production initiated in last January (2.4%).

 


The expansion of 8.6% in the monthly index was supported by the positive performance of the mining and quarrying industry (15.2%), where stood out extraction of iron ores. The manufacturing industry had a more moderate growth (2.4%), with four among five activities recording positive results, standing out non-metallic minerals (38.8%), influenced by the major production of treated kaolin and cement.  The only negative rate came from wood (-35.5%).

 


In the index accumulated in 2008 (6.5%), five among six activities brought positive performances.  The leadership in terms of influence came from mining and quarrying industry (9.3%), followed by basic metallurgy (5.0%) and cellulose and paper (22.6%).  In these segments the highlights were, respectively the items iron ores; aluminum oxide and cast iron; and toilet paper and cellulose, respectively.  The only negative result also came from the segment of wood (-18.0%).

 

 

 


Northeast

 

 


In July, the Northeast Region decreased by 1.0% in relation to June, fifth consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison, accumulating in the period a loss of 5.1%.  In the comparison with July 2007, the industrial sector registered a decrease of 0.3%, second consecutive negative result.  The indexes accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months had increase, both of them, of 3.9%.

 


In the formation of the result of -0.3% compared to July 2007, 4 among 11 segments surveyed brought negative rates, especially petroleum and alcohol production (-14.2%), chemical products (-2.5%) and textiles (-5.6%).  In these segments stood out the decreases in the production of diesel oil; high density polyethylene and adobes and fertilizers; and textiles of cotton and thread, respectively.  The main positive contributions came from cellulose and paper (34.1%) and the mining and quarrying sector (7.2%), especially the items cellulose and paper.

 


In the index accumulated January to July (3.9%), 8 among 11 segments surveyed had positive performances, especially food products and beverages (7.3%), cellulose and paper (27.2%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (4.5%).  The major negative result came from textiles (-4.4%), influenced mainly by the diminishment in the production of cotton and mesh thread.

 

 


Ceará

 

 


In the comparison July/ June, the industrial production of Ceará decreased by 1.4%, after having increased by 4.8% in June.  In the comparison with July 2007, the sector registered expansion of 6.3%.  The index accumulated in the first seven months of 2008 also was positive (3.3%), a result above the closure of the first semester of the year (2.8%).  The rate annualized accelerated the rhythm of growth between the months of June (1.9%) and July (2.7%).

 


In the monthly index, the industry of the state increased by 6.3% with positive results in seven among ten activities surveyed. The main positive result came from food products and beverages (15.1%), supported mainly in the expansion in the manufacturing of toasted cashew nuts.  It is also worth mentioning the positive performances of chemical products (19.6%) and basic metallurgy (54.9%).  On the other hand, the negative influences came from textiles (-6.5), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-22.5%) and non-metallic minerals (-22.6%).

 


In the index accumulated in the year (3.3%), the results were positive in six among ten sectors analyzed.  The leadership in terms of influence came from food products and beverages (13.5%), considerably influenced by toasted cashew nuts.  Other relevant positive contributions came from chemical products (12.5%) and metal products (38.1%).  The major negative contributions were observed in textiles (-7.5%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-27.5%).

 

 


Pernambuco

 

 


In July, the industrial production of Pernambuco decreased by 3.2% compared to the previous month, after increasing by 0.9% in June.  In comparison with similar periods of 2007, the industry increased by 1.7% in relation to July and by 7.0% in the index accumulated in 2008.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months was almost stable from June (5.4%) to July (5.3%).

 


In relation to July of the previous year, the industry of the state increased by 1.7%, with positive results in 5 among 11 activities surveyed, especially basic metallurgy (11.0%), as a consequence of the increase in the production of aluminum plates and bands, and carbon steel square bars.  It is also worth mentioning the increases observed in metal products (24.7%) and rubber and plastic (9.7%), as a consequence, respectively, of the major manufacturing of aluminum cans, iron and steel; plastic hoses, pipes and tubes.  On the other hand, the major negative influences came from electric machines, equipment and material (-14.8%) and non-metallic minerals (-6.3%).

 


In the index accumulated in the year (7.0%), positive rates were registered in 7 among 11 activities.  The major positive influences came from food products and beverages (6.8%), basic metallurgy (9.3%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (129.9%), with growth, respectively, in the production of crystallized and refined sugar; aluminum plates and bands; and alcohol.  On the other hand, stood out the decreases of cellulose  and paper (-10.5%) and footwear and leather articles (-20.9%).

 

 


Bahia

 


The industrial production of Bahia increased by 1.5 % in July, in the comparison with the immediately previous month, after having decreased by 2.9% in June.  In the comparison with July 2007, the industry increased by 0.5%.  The index accumulated in 2008 increased by 4.0%, a result below the closure of the first semester of the year (4.6%).  The rate annualized, while increasing 3.5%, reduced the rhythm of growth compared to the months of May (4.5%) and June (4.1%).

 


In the comparison with July 2007 (0.5%), seven among nine sectors surveyed in Bahia brought positive rates.  The main positive contribution came from cellulose and paper (38.6%), influenced mainly by the major production of cellulose.  In a lower degree, it is also worth mentioning the positive results of non-metallic minerals (21.7%); and rubber and plastic (17.7%).  The main negative results came from alcohol refining and production (-13.5%), due to the lower production of diesel oil and gasoline; and chemical products (-2.8%).

 


In the index accumulated in the year, the industry of the state increased by 4.0%, with the major part of the activities surveyed with expansion.  The main positive influences came from cellulose and paper (31.1%) and basic metallurgy (5.4%).  The only decrease came from chemical products (-1.6%), as a consequence of the decrease in the manufacturing of high density polyethylene and non-saturated ethylene, due to the stoppage for maintenance in June in important companies of the sector.

 

 

 

Minas Gerais

 

 


The industrial production of Minas Gerais increased by 1.8% from June to July, fifth consecutive positive result, period in which it accumulated growth of 6.3%.  In the comparisons with similar periods of 2007, the results also were positive: 8.6% compared to July and 6.9% in the index accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months had a slight deceleration in the rhythm of growth from June (8.0%) to July (7.7%).

 


The expansion of 8.6% in the monthly index showed the positive results in the mining and quarrying industry (8.3%) as well as in the manufacturing industry (8.6%).  In the first segment stood out the increase in the extraction of iron ore.  In the manufacturing industry, where 10 among 12 activities surveyed increased, the main highlights were automotive vehicles (9.8%), basic metallurgy (8.6%) and food products (8.1%), influenced mainly by the items automobiles; carbon steel plates, slugs, ingots and  blocks; and condensed milk and yogurt.  Textiles with decrease of 8.9%, was the main negative influence, due to the decrease of cotton thread and bedclothes.

 


The index accumulated in the first seven months of the year increased by 6.9%, supported in the increase of the manufacturing industry (6.7%) and the mining and quarrying industry (7.8%).  In the manufacturing industry, 9 among 12 activities had expansion, standing out automotive vehicles (18.1%), non-metallic minerals (11.9%) and basic metallurgy (3.8%).  In these segments, the major influences came from the items automobiles; cement; and iron niobium and steel slugs, blocks, plates and ingots, respectively.  Textiles (-8.1%) continued bringing the major negative contribution on the average of the industry of the state in this comparison.

 

 


Espírito Santo

 

 


In July, the industrial production of Espírito Santo increased by 2.1% compared to the previous month, after registering decrease of 2.7% in June. In the comparisons with similar periods of 2007, the indexes also had growth: 14.3% in the comparison with July and 15.8% in the period January-July.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months (13.9%) had a slight increase in the rhythm of expansion compared to June (13.2%).

 


In the comparison with July of the previous year (14.3%), the production registered the tenth consecutive positive rate, supported in the growth of the mining and quarrying industry (18.1%), where stood out the increase in the production of iron ores and natural gas; and in the manufacturing industry (12.4%).  In this last one, stood out basic metallurgy (41.4%).  On the other hand, three segments showed decrease in the production, standing out food products and beverages (-6.9%); as a consequence of the reduction in the manufacturing of cookies, white chocolate and candies.

 


In the index accumulated in the year (15.8%), all the sectors surveyed increased.  The main contributions came from basic metallurgy (34.1%), influenced by the increase in the manufacturing of  steel slugs, blocks, plates and ingots and the mining and quarrying sector (20.1%), as a consequence of the items iron ores, natural gas and petroleum.

 

 


Rio de Janeiro

 

 


The industrial production of Rio de Janeiro had, in July, expansion of 0.6% compared to June, third consecutive positive rate, accumulating in this period a gain of 6.1%.  In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the sector continued with positive indexes (5.4%), performance observed since May.  The index accumulated in the year was 2.7%, above the value of 2.3% observed in the first semester.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months maintained a positive rate, with a slight increase in the rhythm of growth, changing from 2.1% in June to 2.5% in July.

 


Compared to July 2007 (5.4%), the manufacturing industry (5.7%) as well as mining and quarrying (4.5%) showed increase in the production.  In this last one which had the fourth consecutive positive result stood out the major extraction of petroleum.  In the manufacturing industry, 7 among 12 activities brought positive indexes, especially petroleum refining and alcohol production (24.8%), influenced mainly by the major production of gasoline, favored greatly by a low base of comparison, due to a stoppage for maintenance of an important refinery in July 2007.

 


It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions of other chemical products (32.3%) and of automotive vehicles (16.2%), influenced mainly by the production of herbicide and trucks and automobiles, respectively.  On the other hand, the main negative influence came from the pharmaceutical industry (-19.1%), influenced by the decrease of 75% of the products surveyed.  Following came basic metallurgy  (-6.8%), showing not only the decrease in the items carbon steel square bars, steel and tin plate cold bobbins, but also the stoppage for maintenance in an important company of the sector.

 


In the index accumulated in the year, the industry of the state increased by 2.7%, supported mainly by the positive result in 9 among 13 segments surveyed, especially the expansion of automotive vehicles (25.0%). In this sector stood out trucks and automobiles.  It is also worth mentioning the positive influences of other chemical products (10.3%), of mining and quarrying (2.5%) and non-metallic minerals (6.5%), influenced, mainly, by the items herbicides; petroleum; and cement.  Among the four segments with negative rates, the main influences came from pharmaceuticals (-11.7%) and perfumery, soaps and cleaning products (-17.7%).

 

 


São Paulo

 


The industrial production of the state increased by 0.3% in July compared to the immediately previous month, second consecutive positive result, accumulating growth of 3.0%.  In relation to July 2007 the rate was positive (10.9%), and the index accumulated in the first seven months of 2008 had growth in relation to the same period of the previous year. The index accumulated in the last 12 months accelerated the rhythm of growth from June (8.9%) to July (9.3%).

 


In the monthly index (10.9% in July 2008 compared to July 2007), 18 among 20 activities had positive rates. Among these, the major contribution came from automotive vehicles (19.1%), due to the strong dynamism in the production of automobiles. Also stood out with positive rates electronic material and communication equipment (24.0%) and machines and equipment (11.5%).  On the other hand, the negative influences came from perfumery and cleaning products (-3.3%) and office machines and computer equipment (-4.1%), as a consequence, mainly, of the decrease in soaps and tooth paste; and personal computers, respectively.

 


In the index accumulated in the first seven months of the year (10.0%), 18 segments brought positive rates.  The major positive contributions came from automotive vehicles (18.3%), electronic material and communication equipment (24.9%) and electric machines, equipment and material (24.6%), as a consequence, mainly, of the increase in the production of the items: automobiles; commutation equipment; and transformers.  The main negative influence came from perfumery and cleaning products (-4.7%), standing out the decrease in the manufacturing of tooth paste and soaps.

 

 


Paraná

 

 


In July, the industrial production of Paraná increased by 2.1%, in relation to June, after decreasing by 1.1%.  In the comparison with the same month of 2007, the industry continued recording two-digit rate growth, registering 15.1% of expansion of July.  The index accumulated in 2008 was 11.8%, and the index accumulated in the last 12 months increased, changing from 8.9% in June to 9.3% in July.

 


Compared to July 2007 (15.1%), 10 among 14 segments surveyed had increase in the production, being that the main positive contribution came from automotive vehicles (38.5%), as a consequence, mainly, of trucks.  It is also worth mentioning the high rates of edition and printing (41.1%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (22.6%), food products (8.3%) and non-metallic minerals (56.3%), as a consequence mainly of the major production of books and printed matter; diesel oil; poultry pluck, giblets and meats; and cement, respectively.  On the other hand, machines and equipment (-12.4%) brought the main negative influence, as a consequence mainly of the decrease in the manufacturing of refrigerators and freezers, due to the concession of collective vacations in an important company of the sector.

 


In the index accumulated in the seven first months of the year (11.8%), 10 among 14 segments had positive results.  Automotive vehicles (34.6%), edition and printing (33.3%), machines and equipment (14.3%) and cellulose and paper (15.3%) brought the main contributions, standing out the items: trucks; books and printed matter; harvesting machines and agricultural trucks; cardboards.  The most significant negative influence came from other chemical products (-10.3%).

 

 

 


Santa Catarina

 

 


In July, the index of industrial production of Santa Catarina increased by 2.1% compared to June, second consecutive positive rate, accumulating gain of 2.4% in this period.  In the comparison with the same period of the previous year, the industry of the state increased by 3.6%, after two months of decrease in this comparison. The index accumulated for the first seven months of the year also was positive (1.6%).  The rate annualized maintained a trend of deceleration, changing from 3.7% in June to 3.5% in July.

 


The expansion of 3.6% in relation to July 2007, resulted from the growth which reached 8 among 11 activities surveyed, with the main contributions coming from rubber and plastic (21.8%) and automotive vehicles (17.9%), where, stood out, respectively, the items plastic parts and accessories for the automobile industry and trucks and bus bodies.  It is also worth mentioning the positive performance of textiles (8.9%), apparel (7.1%) and electric machines, equipment and material (8.9%).  The most relevant negative contributions came from wood (-25.1%) and machines and equipment (-7.6%), influenced by the decrease in the production of sawed wood, in the first segment, and compressors, due to a stoppage for vacations in an important company of the sector, in the second one.

 


In the production accumulated from January to July (1.6%, result considerably below the national average, of 6.6%), 8 among 11 activities surveyed brought expansion in the production, especially automotive vehicles (14.1%) and rubber and plastic (11.9%).  Among the three sectors which reduced the production, wood (-23.8%) and machines and equipment (-4.8%) brought the main results.

 

 


Rio Grande do Sul

 

 


The industry of Rio Grande do Sul decreased by 1.1% in July in relation to June, after having increased by 6.9% in the previous month.  In the comparison with July 2007, there was increase of 6.2%, and the index accumulated in the year 2008 was 5.0%.  The rate annualized decreased from June (5.7%) to July (5.4%).
Compared to July 2007 (6.2%), 10 among 14 segments surveyed registered increases.  Among these, the most relevant, in terms of influence in the overall rate were machines and equipment (34.8%), automotive vehicles (26.6%) and tobacco (25.8%).  On the other hand, the major negative influence came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-25.1%), due to the lower production, mainly, of gasoline and naphtha for petrochemicals.

 


In the index accumulated January-July (5.0%), increases in 8 among 14 activities surveyed were registered.  The major positive influences came from industries of machines and equipment (27.3%), automotive vehicles (19.7%) and food products (10.0%).  On the other hand, the industries of tobacco (-10.0%) and other chemical products (-4.9%) brought the major negative influences on the overall average.

 

 


Goiás

 

 


In July, the industrial production of Goiás increased by 3.1% compared to June, second consecutive positive result, accumulating gain of 6.5% in these two months.  In the comparison with July 2007, the growth was 17.6%, the highest among the regions surveyed and 11th consecutive positive rate.  As a consequence, the index accumulated in the first seven months of the year increased by 12.8%, above the value observed in the end of the first semester of 2008 (11.9%).  The index accumulated in the last 12 months continued in an accelerated trend of growth, changing from 1.6% in June to 8.8% in July.

 


In relation to July 2007 (17.6%), four among five sectors surveyed had expansion.  The performance of food products and beverages (18.6%) was determinant in the formation of the overall rate, especially the items mayonnaise and powdered milk.  It is also worth mentioning other chemical products (26.3%) and mining and quarrying industry (22.4%), which together, contributed with 4.7 percentage points in the formation of the overall rate.  The only activity which registered a negative rate was basic metallurgy (-3.1%), having its bad performance associated to the decrease in the production of nickel iron.

 


In the index accumulated in the year, the positive rate (12.8%) was supported mainly in the favorable performance of the manufacturing industry (12.6%), while the mining and quarrying industry increased by 15.3%.  The segments which contributed in a positive way were food products and beverages (14.1%) and chemical products (20.4%).  In the first one it could be observed a major participation of mayonnaise and powdered milk and in the second one, increase in the production of adobes or fertilizers and medicines.
