The unemployment rate was statistically stable in relation to May (7.9%), but fell 1.9 percentage points in relation to June 2007 (9.7%).  The unemployed population (1.8 million) had a result stable in relation to May and fell by 17.0% in relation to June 2007.  The employed population (21.7 million) increased by 1.1% in the month and by 4.5% in the year. The level of employment 1 (52.6%) was the highest one of the new series of the PME (Monthly Employment Survey), which began in March 2002.  The number of workers with a formal contract (9.5 million) did not change in relation to May, but increased by 9.5% in relation to June 2007. The average real income usually earned by employed persons (R$ 1,216.50) did not have a significant change in relation to May (R$ 1,219.20), but increased by 1.7% in the year. The average household real income per capita (R$ 797.65) increased by 0.7% in the month and by 6.2% in the year.  The volume of real income in effect of the employed population (R$ 26.7 billion) increased by 0.9% in the month and by 7.0% in the year.

 

 

 


 

 

 

In June 2008, the unemployment rate (7.8%) for the six surveyed areas was stable in relation to May (7.9%).  In relation to June 2007, the rate decreased by 1.9 percentage points.

 

In the analysis by areas, in the month, there was stability in all the areas.  In relation to June 2007, a significant decrease was recorded in Recife (4.1 percentage points), Salvador (2.5 percentage points), Rio de Janeiro (1.4 percentage points), São Paulo (2.0 percentage points) and Porto Alegre (1.3 percentage points).  The following table shows the evolution of the unemployment rate for the months of June, since 2002.

 

 

 


 

 

 

In May, the number of unemployed persons2  was stable in the sum of the six surveyed areas.  In relation to June 2007, there was decrease of 17.0%.  In the analysis by areas, there was not change in relation to the previous month.  In the comparison with June 2007, there were decreases in Recife (34.1%), Belo Horizonte (1.6%), Salvador (20.0%), Rio de Janeiro (16.6%), São Paulo (16.4%) and Porto Alegre (15.2%).

 

 

 

EMPLOYED PERSONS (PO)

 

 


The number of employed persons (21.7 million) in June 2008 in the six surveyed metropolitan areas by the PME increased by 1.1% in relation to the previous month and 4.5% in the comparison with June 2007, percentage which corresponded to approximately 932 thousand job places. 
In the analysis by areas, in relation to the previous month, there were hikes in Recife (3.8%) and São Paulo (1.6%).  In the year, hikes were recorded in Belo Horizonte (5.2%), Rio de Janeiro (3.3%), São Paulo (6.1%) and Porto Alegre (5.1%).

 

 

 


 

 

 

The level of employment3  (52.6%) in the total six areas was the highest in the new series of the PME, which began in March 2002.  The index increased by 0.4 percentage points in the monthly comparison and 1.3 percentage points in relation to June 2007.  In the analysis by areas, in the comparison with the previous month, there was change in this index only in the metropolitan areas of Recife (1.4 percentage points) and São Paulo (0.7 percentage points).  In the comparison with June 2007, changes occurred in the metropolitan areas of Belo Horizonte (1.2 percentage points), Rio de Janeiro (1.1 percentage points), São Paulo (2.0 percentage points) and Porto Alegre (1.7 percentage points).

 

 

Analysis of classes of workers in the labor market

 

Employees WITH a formal contract in the private sector (excluding household workers, military, statutory public servants and others), 43.9% of the employed population.  In relation to May, the number of workers in this category in the labor market did not change.  Hike was registered compared to June 2007 (9.5%).


In the analysis by areas, regarding the monthly comparison, the scenario was of stability.  In relation to June 2007, hike occurred in all the areas: Recife (8.1%), Salvador (6.6%), Belo Horizonte (11.1%), Rio de Janeiro (8.5%), São Paulo (10.4%) and Porto Alegre (8.6%).

 

Employees WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (excluding household workers, military, statutory public servants and others), 13.4% of the employed population.  The number of workers in this category was stable, in the monthly and annual comparison.

 

In the analysis by areas, the scenario was stable in the comparison with May.  In the annual comparison, only in Recife a significant change was recorded (-23.7%).

 

 

 


 

 

 

Military or statutory public servants , 7.5% of the employed population. In relation to May, this group of workers had stability regarding the total of the six metropolitan areas, and in the comparison with June 2007, there was hike of 5.9%.


In the comparison by areas, the scenario was of stability in all the areas in relation to the previous month, and in relation to June of the previous year, Belo Horizonte had hike in this total (11.3%).

 


Own-account workers, 18.9% of the employed population. In both periods of comparison, this category did not change.  

 

  
In the analysis by areas, there was hike in relation to May in the metropolitan areas of Recife (13.0%). In the comparison with June 2007, this percentage increased by 15.7% in Recife.  

 

 

AVERAGE REAL INCOME4

 

The survey estimated in the month of June 2008, for the sum of the six areas, the average real income in effect in R$ 1,216.50, presenting stability in relation to last May (R$ 1,219.83).  In the comparison with June 2007, the scenario was of recovery (1.7%).

 

 

 


 

 

 

In the analysis by areas, in relation to the previous month, there were gains in Salvador (0.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.7%).  The income decreased in Recife (3.6%), Belo Horizonte (1.9%), São Paulo (0.7%) and Porto Alegre (0.9%).  In the annual comparison, the performance was of hike in five metropolitan areas: Salvador (6.9%), Belo Horizonte (1.6%), Rio de Janeiro (3.4%), São Paulo (1.0%) and Porto Alegre (0.7%).  Decrease was registered in Recife (4.9%).

Real income of workers by groups of activity

 


In the comparison with May 2008, hike was observed in the following groups of activity: trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail fuel trade (1.6%); services rendered to companies, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (1.2%) and other services (2.1%).  There were decreases in the following groups: mining and quarrying, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (2.2%) and construction (6.8%).  Were stable: education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security and, also, domestic services.

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

In the comparison with June 2007, there were hikes in the following groups of activity: mining and quarrying, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (0.9%); construction (4.1%); trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail fuel trade (1.6%); services rendered to companies, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (0.6%); education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (0.4%); domestic services (3.4%) and other services (2.0%).

 

 

AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD REAL INCOME PER CAPITA5

 

The survey estimated in June 2008, for the sum of the six areas, the average household real income per capita in R$ 797.65. This value brought increase in comparison to the previous month (0.7%).  In the comparison with June of the previous year, the scenario was of recovery (6.2%).

 

In the analysis by areas, in relation to last May, increase was observed in the income of the metropolitan areas of Salvador (4.0%), Rio de Janeiro (2.9%) and Porto Alegre (1.3%). An opposite trend was observed in Recife (-1.0%), Belo Horizonte (-0.9%) and São Paulo (-0.6%). In the comparison with June of the previous year, recovery was observed in the following localities: Salvador (7.8%), Belo Horizonte (5.9%), Rio de Janeiro (6.8%), São Paulo (7.3%) and Porto Alegre (5.0%). Only in the metropolitan area of Recife decrease was observed in the income (-5.9%).

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

VOLUME OF REAL INCOME IN EFFECT OF THE EMPLOYED POPULATION6 

 

 


The volume of real income in effect of the employed population (R$ 26.5 billion) (month of reference May 2008) for the total of the six metropolitan areas increased by 0.6% in relation to April 2008 and by  7.9% in relation to May 2007.
In the analysis by areas, in the comparison with last April there was decrease in Recife (0.9%), Belo Horizonte (1.4%) and Porto Alegre (0.6%). On the other hand hike was registered in Salvador (1.4%), Rio de Janeiro (2.2%) and São Paulo (0.5%). In the comparison with May 2007, there was hike in Salvador (6.5%), Belo Horizonte (6.2%), Rio de Janeiro (9.3%), São Paulo (9.2%) and Porto Alegre (7.3%).  The only metropolitan area with decrease in the annual comparison was Recife (3.5%).
