The Extended National Consumer Price Index -15 (IPCA-15) increased by 0.63% in July, below the increase of 0.90% registered in June.

The Extended National Consumer Price Index -15 (IPCA-15) increased by 0.63% in July, below the increase of 0.90% registered in June.  With this result, the index summed 4.33% in the year, above the value of the same period of 2006 (2.42%).  The index accumulated in the last twelve months (6.30%) also was above the value of the 12 immediately previous months (5.89%).

Although continuing to be responsible for the major part of the monthly index, the group food products and beverages had deceleration in the rate of prices,  decreasing from 2.30% in June to 1.75% in July.  Even so, with 0.40 percentage points of contribution, the group food products and beverages was responsible for 63% of the IPCA-15 of the month.

Important products in the household consumption had less intense hikes from one month to the next or even decrease of prices.  The kilo of rice, which had increased by 17.09% in June, had growth of 2.82% in July.  Bread rolls from 3.43% changed to 0.11%.  Wheat flour, which had increased by 6.95% in June, in July decreased by 1.06%.

Among the increases, the main highlights in food products and beverages were black beans (from 5.45% in June to 6.74% in July), “carioca” beans (from -0.59% to 17.07%), meats (from 5.35% to 6.86%) and meals consumed outside home (from 1.55% to 1.89%).

The group food products and beverages was not the only one to show deceleration in the IPCA-15 from June to July.  Among the nine groups of products and services which compose the index, only one, transportation, increased from June to July, due mainly to the increase of gasoline (from -0.23% to 0.79%). In the table below, we may see the results.

In housing, it is important to observe the item electricity which decreased by 0.35%, even with the readjustment of 8.63% in July 4 in the tariffs of São Paulo.  This decrease occurred because there was a reduction of 3.33% in the contribution of Pis/Pasep/Confins (federal taxes), a fact which also influenced the results of other areas.  Another important result in the group housing was the item cooking gas, with a change of 0.08% in July compared to 1.49% in June.

Therefore, non-food products also had deceleration in the IPCA-15, increasing 0.29% in July compared to 0.50% in June and accumulating 2.61% in the year.

Among the indexes by areas, the highest one was registered in the metropolitan areas of Curitiba (1.11%), where fuels had the major changes: gasoline (5.58%) and alcohol (11.33%).  Recife (0.40%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.41%) brought the lowest rates.  Below we may see the results.

To calculate IPCA-15, prices collected from June 14 to July 14 were compared to those charged between May 16 and June 13.  The index refers to families with income ranging from 1 to 40 minimum wages and covers the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia.  The methodology used is the same one of the IPCA; the difference lies in the period of price collection.
