Employment in industry changes by 0.3% in November

The rate is the fifth consecutive one in the month-on-month comparison, with cumulative increase of 2.4%, seasonally-adjusted. The comparison with November 2006 shows increase of 3.9%, the biggest increment since December 2004 (4.1%). Employment in industry increased 2.1% and 2.0% in terms of cumulative figures in the year and in the last twelve months. Nevertheless, the real payroll of industry workers decreased 3.5% from October to November, and interrupted a sequence of five positive rates, with cumulative expansion of 4.2%. The results of other comparisons remain positive: 6.4% in relation to November 2006; 5.3% cumulative in the year and 4.8% cumulative in the last twelve months. 

SALARIED EMPLOYED PERSONS

Employment in industry recorded, in November 2007 versus November 2006, increase of 3.9%. That was the seventeenth consecutive positive rate, and the highest since the 4.1% of December 2004. As a result, indicators for longer periods remain on an upward trend, with figures above those of previous months: the increase of 2.1% in the cumulative index until November surpasses the results of September (1.8%) and October (2.0%). In terms of cumulative figures in the last twelve months, the index changed from 1.8% in October to 2.0% in November.

In the comparison November 2007 / November 2006, twelve of the fourteen areas and twelve of the eighteen subsectors surveyed contributed positively to the increase of the employed population in industry. By sector, the main contributions came from food products and beverages (4.8%), means of transportation (11.8%), machinery and equipment (10.3%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (12.1%). Among the subsectors facing decline of employment, footwear and leather articles (-8.7%) and wood (-5.8%) accounted for the main negative decreases in the country overall.

By Region, in the same comparison, the highlights were the increments of São Paulo (6.5%), which holds about 37% of the employed persons in industry, North Region and Central West Region (4.3%), Paraná (4.6%) and Minas Gerais (3.4%). In São Paulo, employment increased in thirteen subsectors and the main positive contributions came from communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (19.5%), means of transportation (10.4%) and food products and beverages (7.4%), accounting for the main positive impacts. In the North and Central West Region, the most significant result among the eleven segments recording increase was that of food products and beverages (10.0%). Both in Paraná as in Minas Gerais, the main highlight was means of transportation (32.6% and 16.8%, respectively). The only two negative contributions came from Espírito Santo (-4.5%) and Ceará (-1.3%).

The cumulative indicator relative to January-November recorded increase of 2.1% in terms of number of workers, a result above that of the end of 2004 (1.8%). Hirings outnumbered layoffs in twelve subsectors, the main highlights being food products and beverages (4.3%), means of transportation (7.3%), metal products (6.9%) and machinery and equipment (6.6%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-7.1%), apparel (-3.7%) ad wood (-5.8%) accounted for the main negative impacts in terms of the general index. In the analysis by Region, thirteen areas recorded increase of employment in industry, the main highlight being São Paulo (3.5%), followed by Paraná (2.9%), Northeast Region (1.4%) and Minas Gerais (1.5%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-0.1%) remained with the only negative rate.

In summary, the positive evolution of employment indexes is accordance with the biggest dynamism of productive activity throughout 2007. In comparisons with similar periods in the previous years, the number of employed persons recorded positive results both in the monthly indicator, which has increased since July 2006, and in terms of the cumulative index (2.1%), which shows, up to November, a result above that of the end of 2004 (1.8%), when there was increase of industrial output by 8.3%. Another positive sign came from seasonally adjusted comparisons, in which employment has kept positive rates since July 2007, maintaining the upward trend of the quarterly moving average.  

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

The number of hours paid to industry workers, in November, increased 1.0% over October, in the seasonally-adjusted series. That was the fourth consecutive positive result, in a period with cumulative increase of 2.8%. In comparisons with similar periods in 2006, the results were also positive: 2.9% over November and 1.8% cumulative in the year. The annualized rate, the cumulative indicator of the last twelve months, records slight decrease, having changed from 1.5% in October to 1.7% in November.

In the comparison November 2007/November 2006, the increase of 2.9% of the number of hours paid was widespread and reached twelve of the fourteen areas, as well as twelve of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. By sector, the main contributions came from means of transportation (12.3%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (12.9%) and food products and beverages (3.0%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-11.3%) and wood (-6.2%) accounted for the main negative contributions.

In terms of Regions, also considering the monthly indicator, the main negative impact on the national result came from São Paulo (5.0%), followed by North and Central West Region (4.6%) and Paraná (4.4%). In the industry of São Paulo, thirteen of the eighteen activities recorded increase of the number of hours paid, the main highlights being communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (20.2%), means of transportation (12.1%) and machinery and equipment (8.2%). In the North and Central West Region, the highlights, among the positive contributions, were: food products and beverages (11.1%) and metallurgy (30.8%). In the industry of Paraná, the most relevant contributions came from means of transportation (36.9%). On the other hand, the only two negative results were those of Espírito Santo (-5.0%) and Ceará (-0.7%).

REAL PAYROLL

In November 2007, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers decreased 3.5% in relation to October 2007, and interrupted a sequence of five positive rates, a period with cumulative expansion of 4.2%. In the comparisons with similar periods in the previous year, results remain positive: 6.4% in relation to November 2006, the best result since December 2004 (10.7%) and 5.3% cumulative in the year. The annualized rate, cumulative indicator of the last twelve months, having changed from 4.4% in October to 4.8% in November, has remained on an upward trend since December 2006 (1.3%).

In the comparison between November 2007/November 2006, the real payroll increased 6.4% and has maintained positive rates in this type of indicator for twenty consecutive months. Positive contributions to this increase came from thirteen of the fourteen areas surveyed, and the main impact on the national average came from São Paulo (6.4%), mainly due to the gains recorded in means of transportation (12.5%), chemical products (18.1%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (11.4%). It is also worth mentioning the positive results of Rio Grande do Sul (11.7%), Minas Gerais and Northeast Region (7.9%). In these areas, the highlights were, respectively, metal products (49.0%) mining and quarrying industry (24.7%); and chemical products (32.2%). On the other hand, Santa Catarina (-0.9%) was the only area facing decrease.

In terms of subsector, also in the November 2007/November 2006 comparison, real payroll increased in sixteen of the eighteen subsectors, the main highlights being the contributions of means of transportation (12.4%), chemical products (18.2%), food products and beverages (4.7%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (10.0%). On the contrary, editing and printing (-7.3%) and wood (-11.7%) recorded the only negative rates.

In terms of subsector, also in the November 2007/November 2006 comparison, real payroll increased in sixteen of the eighteen subsectors, the main highlights being the contributions of means of transportation (12.4%), chemical products (18.2%), food products and beverages (4.7%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (10.0%). On the contrary, editing and printing (-7.3%) and wood (-11.7%) recorded the only negative rates.

 The cumulative indicator (year) of real payroll increased 5.3%, the highest rate since the 9.7% of 2004, with positive rates in all the areas surveyed. The most significant influence on the overall average was that of São Paulo (4.3%), mainly due to advances recorded in chemical products (14.9%), means of transportation (7.0%) and food products and beverages (3.1%). Other highlights were the results of Rio Grande do Sul (8.2%), Minas Gerais (6.5%) and Northeast Region (6.5%). By subsector, fourteen activities recorded increase of payroll, and the main impacts were observed in chemical products (12.7%), means of transportation (7.4%), food products and beverages (6.2%) and mining and quarrying industry (16.7%). On the other hand, editing and printing (-3.9%), wood and footwear and leather articles (-2.4%) accounted for the biggest decreases of salaries.
