In November 2007, industrial production fell in 7 among 14 surveyed areas

In the comparison with October, the more pronounced decrease occurred in Paraná (-9.1%), which had increased 14.1% in the previous month.  With more intensive negative results than the one observed in national level (-1.8%) were Amazonas (-2.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.5%), while São Paulo (-1.6%) had a rate close to the average.  Santa Catarina (-1.0%), Ceará (-0.8%) and Pará (-0.7%) brought the other decreases in this comparison.  Espírito Santo (2.6%), Minas Gerais (1.3%), Bahia (0.9%), Goiás (0.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.6%) and Pernambuco (0.6%) had expansion in the production.  The Northeast Region (0.0%) was stable compared to the level of October.

In the comparison with November 2006, the regional indexes presented a generalized profile of growth, which reached almost all the localities, except Pará (-2.0%).  Espírito Santo (11.6%) had the only two digit rate, followed by Minas Gerais (9.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.7%), São Paulo (8.5%) and Amazonas (7.4%) – all increasing above the national average (6.7%).  The other positive results were observed in Santa Catarina (5.7%), Goiás (4.7%), Northeast Region (3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (2.8%), Pernambuco (2.8%), Bahia (2.8%), Paraná (2.1%) and Ceará (1.9%). 

In the indicator accumulated January-November 2007, there was growth in all the surveyed localities, led by Minas Gerais (8.8%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (8.0%), Paraná (7.1%), Espírito Santo (6.7%) and São Paulo (6.1%), all with rates above the national average (6.0%).

 In these localities, the pattern of growth for the total Brazilian industry which occurred during the last year was observed again, with a strong presence of the producing sectors of capital goods (especially related to the agricultural sectors, computer equipment and transportation) and durable consumer goods (automobiles), besides typically exporting sectors, especially of commodities (iron ore, sugar and poultry meat).  The other results were the following: Santa Catarina (5.7%), Pernambuco (4.4%), Amazonas (3.7%), Northeast Region (2.5%), Pará (2.3%), Goiás (2.2%), Rio de Janeiro (1.9%), Bahia (1.5%) and Ceará (0.2%).

 

Amazonas 

In November, the industry of the state fell 2.6% in relation to October, in the series without seasonal influence, after increasing 5.4%.  In relation to November 2006 the increase was 7.4%.  The indicators for longer periods also showed increase: 3.7% in the indicator accumulated in the year 2007 and 3.3% in the indicator accumulated in the 12 months closed in November 2007, both with a rhythm above the one observed in October (3.3% and 2.7%, respectively).

The growth in the monthly indicator (November 07/ November 06) occurred due to the expansion of 6 among 11 surveyed activities.   The highlights were edition and printing (73.5%); petroleum refining and alcohol production, with an atypical increase of 264.6% influenced by a low base of comparison, as a consequence of programmed stoppages for maintenance in producing units in November 2006; and other transportation equipment (15.9%).  The main negative result came from food products and beverages (-12.4%) and, in a lower degree, from chemical products (-24.8%) and metal products (-11.9%). 

In the indicator accumulated in the year 2007 (3.7%), the growth of industry occurred, mainly due to the positive performance of seven sectors, being that the major positive results were observed in  edition and printing (77.2%), other transportation equipment (18.1%), food products and beverages (12.1%) and machines and equipment (44.9%).  Electronic material and communication equipment (-18.7%) brought the main negative contribution, influenced by the items mobile telephones and TV television sets.

Pará 

The industry of Pará decreased 0.7% in November 2007, in relation to October, in the series without seasonal influence, after an increase of 1.9%.  In the comparison with November 2006, the decrease was 2.0%, but the indicator accumulated in the year 2007 showed increase of 2.3%.  The annualized rate (indicator accumulated in the last 12 months), even increasing 2.9%, is in a downward trend since January 2007 (14.2%). 

In the comparison November 2007/ November 2006, the decrease of production reached four among six surveyed activities.  The main negative result was observed in mining and quarrying (-5.1%), followed by food products and beverages (-11.7%).  On the other hand, basic metallurgy (5.5%) and cellulose and paper (23.9%) recorded growth.

The increase in the indicator accumulated in 2007 was supported mainly in mining and quarrying (7.5%), once the manufacturing industry (-2.0%) continued decreasing.  In the first one, stood out the major extraction of iron ores.  In the manufacturing industry, the most important negative influence came from food products and beverages (-14.1%); and the main positive contribution, from basic metallurgy (3.6%). 

Northeast

In the comparison with October, the industry of the Northeast had a null growth in November 2007, in the series without seasonal influence after increasing for two consecutive months, period in which it accumulated gain of 1.6%.  The comparison with November 2006 and the indicator accumulated in the year 2007 showed growths of 3.2% and 2.5% respectively.  The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, even with expansion of 2.0%, maintained the reduction in the rhythm of growth since July (2.8%).

In the comparison with November 2006, there were increases in 9 among 11 surveyed segments, being that the major positive results came from textile industries (11.3%) and chemical products (3.8%).  Only food products and beverages (-0.8%) and basic metallurgy (-1.0%) influenced negatively the overall index.

In the indicator accumulated January - November 2007, 6 among 11 surveyed activities had positive rates.  The main influence came from food products and beverages (6.2%), followed by non-metallic minerals (9.1%) and chemical products (2.2%).  The major negative influences came from cellulose and paper (-3.2%) and electric machines, equipment and material (-5.4%).

 Ceará

 In November, the industrial production of Ceará seasonally adjusted fell 0.8% in relation to the immediately previous month, after growing for three consecutive months, accumulating gain of 5.3% in the period.  In the comparison with November 2006, the growth was 1.9%, while the accumulated rate in the year 2007 was close to stability (0.2%).  In the last 12 months, the indicator accumulated changed from 1.0% in October to 0.6% in November, maintaining a downward trend since January 2007 (7.0%).

In the comparison with November 2006, the industry of the state registered positive rates in five among ten surveyed sectors, coming from footwear and leather articles (15.5%) the main positive influence.  On the other hand, the major negative result came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-34.8%), followed by non-metallic minerals (-23.1%).

Regarding the indicator accumulated from January to November 2007, the results were positive in five industrial activities, being the main contributions observed in food products and beverages (6.2%), footwear and leather articles (7.9%) and chemical products (17.1%).  The major negative results came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-33.4%) and textile industry (-4.4%).

 Pernambuco 

The industrial production of Pernambuco seasonally adjusted increased 0.6% in November compared to October, when it had decreased 1.3%.  In the comparisons with similar periods of 2006, the results were positive compared to November (2.8%) and in the indicator accumulated in January - November (4.4%).  The annualized rate repeated the percentage of 4.3% of October, inverting the downward trend which began in August (5.8%).

In relation to November 2006, only 5 among 11 industrial activities had growth, being that the major positive contribution came from chemical products (23.6%).  The main negative result came from food products and beverages (-1.9%).

The indicator accumulated in the year was positive in seven sectors, and chemical products (21.5%) brought the main influence on the overall rate.   On the other hand, the worst results came from electric machines, equipment and material (-3.7%) and footwear and leather articles (-12.9%).

Bahia

In November, the industrial production of Bahia seasonally adjusted increased 0.9% in relation to October, when it had increased 3.0%.  In the comparisons with similar periods of 2006, the results were positive in relation to November (2.8%) and in the indicator accumulated January - November (1.5%).  The index accumulated in the last 12 months maintained a downward trend, changing from 0.8% in October to 0.7% in November.

 In the monthly indicator, six among nine sectors of the industry of the state increased, with chemical products (3.9%) and cellulose and paper (14.3%) bringing the main positive influences. The most significant decreases came from basic metallurgy (-4.7%) and food products and beverages (-2.2%).

 The indicator accumulated in the year was positive in five among nine sectors, being the main result observed in food products and beverages (10.4%).  On the other hand, the major decreases were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-2.2%) and cellulose and paper (-3.0%).

Minas Gerais

The industrial sector of Minas Gerais increased by 1.3% in November 2007 compared to the previous month, in the series without seasonal influence, after expansion of 2.3% in October.  In the comparison with similar periods of 2006, there was growth of 9.6% compared to November and 8.8% in the indicator accumulated January-November.  The annualized rate (indicator accumulated in the last 12 months) continued increasing, changing from 8.3% in October to 8.6% in November.

In the comparison with November 2006, the expansion was supported in the good performance of mining and quarrying (17.9%) as well as in the manufacturing industry (8.3%).  The positive performance of mining and quarrying, as a consequence mainly of the extraction of iron ores, brought the second major positive influence on the overall average.  In the manufacturing industry, where 9 among 12 surveyed sectors had positive rates, the sector of automobile vehicles (32.8%) brought the main result.  It is also worth mentioning the positive results of machines and equipment (32.4%), metal products (18.6%), cellulose and paper (15.1%), non-metallic minerals (7.8%) and basic metallurgy (2.2%).  On the other hand, the activities which mostly influenced negatively the overall rate were petroleum refining and alcohol production (-9.6%) and food products (-4.2%).

The indicator accumulated in January-November, compared to the same period of 2006, showed that 11 industrial groups of the state increased.  Once again, automotive vehicles (22.4%) brought the most important positive result, followed by mining and quarrying (11.1%) and by machines and equipment (22.7%).  Only food products (-0.1%) and tobacco (-0.9%) had decrease in this comparison.

 Espírito Santo

 In November 2007, the industrial production of Espírito Santo seasonally adjusted increased by 2.6% compared to October, second consecutive positive rate, accumulating in these two months a gain of 9.8% and almost equaling the decrease of 10.4% observed in September.  In the comparison with November 2006, there was expansion of 11.6%.  The indicators accumulated in the year (6.7%) and in the last 12 months (6.9%) had results above the ones observed in October (6.1% and 6.8%, respectively).

In the comparison November 07/ November 06, the growth of production of the industry of the state was supported mainly in the performances of basic metallurgy (40.5%) and mining and quarrying (10.5%).  The sector of non-metallic minerals (0.9%) was another industrial activity with positive result in this type of comparison. Cellulose and paper (-4.0%) and food products and beverages (-3.8%) brought the two negative results. 

The indicator accumulated registered increases in mining and quarrying (14.7%) as in manufacturing (3.3%).  In the first segment, the extraction of petroleum was a highlight.  In the manufacturing industry, the main highlight was basic metallurgy (6.8%), followed by food products and beverages (6.2%).  The only segment which recorded decrease was cellulose and paper (-1.9%).

Rio de Janeiro

In November 2007, the industrial production of Rio de Janeiro seasonally adjusted fell again (-2.5%) compared to the previous month, after strong acceleration in October (8.9%).  In the comparison with November 2006, the production increased 2.8%.  Growth was also observed in the indexes accumulated in the year 2007 (1.9%) and in the last 12 months (1.7%), with gain compared to September and October.

In relation to November 2006, the highlight of the industrial sector of the state was the positive contribution of the manufacturing industry (5.2%).  Mining and quarrying (-7.0%), with the fourth consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison, was the main negative influence, due to the decrease in the extraction of petroleum.  In the manufacturing industry, 6 among 12 activities had expansion in the production, being the most significant influences the ones of automotive vehicles (42.4%) and basic metallurgy (14.8%).  It is also worth mentioning the positive performance of other chemical products (11.4%) and beverages (12.6%).  Food products (-11.2%) stood out among the groups with negative rates.

In the indicator accumulated in January-November 2007, compared to the similar period of 2006, basic metallurgy (11.4%) and automotive vehicles (20.5%), with two-digit growing rates had the major influences on the overall index.  It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions of other chemical products (7.2%) and edition and printing (6.6%).  Among the five activities which reduced the production, stood out pharmaceuticals (-14.6%), followed by food products (-7.7%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-2.9%) and mining and quarrying (-2.3%), this last one due mainly to technical stoppages.

São Paulo

In November, the industrial production of São Paulo fell by 1.6% compared to October, in the series without seasonal influence, after increasing for three consecutive months with gain of 3.8%.  In relation to the similar period of 2006, the rates were positive in the comparison with November (8.5%) and in the indicator accumulated in the year (6.1%).  In the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, the production had an increasing trend since June 2007, and gained rhythm between October (5.0%) and November (5.5%).

In the comparison November 07/ November 06, the positive results reached 17 among 20 surveyed activities, especially automotive vehicles (20.7%), machines and equipment (17.2%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (13.4%) and other chemical products (10.6%).  The segments with decrease in the production were other transportation equipment (-15.8%), edition and printing (-2.1%) and cellulose and paper (-0.8%).

In the indicator accumulated in the year, 17 sectors also expanded the production.  Machines and equipment (15.7%), automotive vehicles (6.1%) and electronic material and communication equipment (12.4%) continued leading in terms of influence on the overall index.  On the other hand, the three activities which brought negative results were electric machines, equipment and material (-3.5%), edition and printing (-1.1%) and cellulose and paper (-1.2%).

Paraná

The industrial production of Paraná fell 9.1% in November compared to October, already seasonally adjusted, after a strong expansion of 14.1% in that month.  In relation to November 2006, the growth was 2.1%, 14th consecutive positive rate.  With this, in the comparisons with longer periods, the results continued positive: 7.1% in the indicator accumulated in the year 2007 and 6.7% in the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months – with deceleration in the rhythm of growth in relation to October (7.2%).

In the monthly index (November 07/ November 06), there was increase in 8 among 14 surveyed activities.  Automotive vehicles (55.9%) recorded the main positive result. Following, although in a lower scale, were machines and equipment (21.0%) and food products (8.4%).  The most significant negative result came from edition and printing (-46.7%), followed by petroleum refining and alcohol production (-26.9%).

In the indicator accumulated in 2007, nine segments brought positive rates, with the main positive influence coming from automotive vehicles (30.2%).  The most relevant negative results came from edition and printing (-9.2%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-4.9%) and wood (-6.5%).

Santa Catarina

In November 2007, the industrial production of Santa Catarina fell 1.0% compared to October, already seasonally adjusted, after increasing 1.4%.  In the comparisons with similar periods of 2006, an expansion of 5.7% was observed compared to November as well as in the indicator accumulated in the year.  In the monthly comparison, it was the 11th consecutive increase.  The annualized rate maintained acceleration in the rhythm of growth, changing from 3.8% in September to 4.6% in October and 5.1% in November.

In the comparison November 07/ November 06, the expansion reached 9 among 11 surveyed segments, with the most relevant contributions coming from machines and equipment (9.6%), rubber and plastic (18.9%), automotive vehicles (17.4%) and food products (4.5%).  The only two negative results came from wood (-23.0%) and apparel (-2.8%). 

The increase in the indicator accumulated in January-November 2007, compared to the same period of 2006, showed the expansion also in 9 among 11 sectors, with major influence of food products (8.2%) and machines and equipment (8.5%).  The sector of wood (-0.6%) was the only with a negative rate.

Rio Grande do Sul

In November 2007, the industry of Rio Grande do Sul increased 0.6% in relation to October, in the series without seasonal influence, after increasing 2.9%.  In the comparison with the same month of 2006 and in the indicator accumulated in the year, growths of respectively, 8.7% and 8.0% were observed.  The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months continued in an ascending trend since September 2006, changing from 6.8% in October to 7.4% in November.

In the comparison November 07/ November 06, 10 among 14 surveyed segments had positive rates, especially machines and equipment (37.3%) and food products (15.4%).  The main negative result came from other chemical products (-5.9%).

The indicator accumulated in January – November showed expansion in ten activities.  The main positive results were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (31.5%), machines and equipment (33.3%) and automotive vehicles (27.2%).  Footwear and leather articles (-7.3%) and tobacco (-5.8%) brought the major negative results.

Goiás 

In November, the industrial production of Goiás, in the series without seasonal influence, increased 0.8% compared to October, after recording expansion of 3.7%.  In the comparisons with same periods of 2006, the results were also positive: 4.7% compared to November and 2.2% in the indicator accumulated in the year.  In the annualized rate (accumulated in the last 12 months), there was a slight decrease in the rhythm of growth, from 2.3% in October to 2.1% in November.

 Four among five surveyed activities had growth in the comparison November 07/ November 06.  The main influences were observed in food products and beverages (3.2%) and chemical products (15.1%). Basic metallurgy (-1.4%) was the only segment with decrease in the production.

The production accumulated in the year 2007 increased in mining and quarrying (9.8%) and in manufacturing (1.2%).  In the first segment, the highlight was the major production of amianthus.  In the manufacturing industry, the main influences came from food products and beverages (0.9%) and non-metallic minerals (8.9%).
