Industrial employment changed by 0.3% in October

The rate is the fourth positive one in the month/immediately previous month comparison (seasonally adjusted series). In comparison with October 2006, there was 3.4% of increase, the highest figure since December 2004 (4.1%). The index accumulated in the year was 2.0%, that is, above the figure in 2004 (1.8%) and the index accumulated in the last twelve months, 1.8%.  The seasonally adjusted real payroll of workers increased by 2.0% from September to October, with rise in the remaining comparisons: 6.1% before October/06; 5.2% accumulated in the year and 4.4% accumulated in the last twelve months.

 

SALARIED EMPLOYED PERSONS

In October, industrial employment changed by 0.3% in comparison with September (seasonally adjusted figure). It was the fourth positive result, with accumulated increase of 2.1%. In comparison with the same month in the previous year, the increase of 3.4% was the highest rate since December 2004 (4.1%). Considering the indicator accumulated in the year, the number of employed persons had increase of 2.0%, more than in 2004 (1.8%). The index accumulated in the last twelve months also remains on a growing trend, having changed from 1.5%, in September, to 1.8%, in October.

In relation to October 2006, the increase of 3.4% affected 11 of the 14 areas surveyed, especially São Paulo (5.4%), Paraná (4.6%) and North and Central West Regions (3.8%). In São Paulo, the biggest contributions for the global increase of employment came from machinery and equipment (11.9%) and means of transportation (10%); in Paraná, the highlights were means of transportation (33.0%) and food products and beverages (5.0%); in the North and Central West Region, the leader was food products and beverages (6.6%). Other positive results were those of Minas Gerais (3.0%), Santa Catarina (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.5%), Northeast Region (0.8%), Rio de Janeiro (0.9%) and Bahia (1.5%). The only decreases occurred in Ceará (-1.9%), Espírito Santo (-2.9%) and Pernambuco (-0.4%).

 

All over the country, the number of employed persons increased in 12 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, and the main highlights were the positive impacts of food products and beverages (4.1%), means of transportation (11.2%), machinery and equipment (10.9%) and metal products (9.2%). The dynamism observed in foreign sales, mainly in the industry of food products (sugar, grains and frozen meat), cars and production of capital goods, form the basis of these positive results. On the other hand, the main negative contribution is still that of footwear and leather articles (-9.3%), a subsector which holds about 6.0% of all the industry workers.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year (2.0%) shows a predominantly positive scenario among the areas, with São Paulo (3.2%), Paraná (2.7%) and Northeast Region (1.5%) as the main highlights. Rio Grande do Sul is the only area with negative change (-0.3%), still under the influence of the footwear subsector, which had a two-digit result (-13.3%). By subsector, the country results show that food products and beverages (4.3%), means of transportation (6.8%), metal products (6.8%) and machinery and equipment (6.3%) were the most significant positive highlights. On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from footwear and leather articles (-7.0%) and apparel (-3.9%).

 

In summary, the October indexes confirm the positive moment of employment throughout 2007, reflecting the favorable economic scenario which has stimulated industrial activity. In the seasonally adjusted series, there has been accumulated increase of 2.1% in the four months in comparison with the immediately previous month; in the quarterly moving average, the index increased by 3.0% between January and October. In comparison with similar periods in 2006, the employment indicators have had the best results since 2004.

 

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID 

The number of hours paid to industry workers, in October, increased by 0.5% in relation to September, in the seasonally adjusted series, and maintaned a sequence of three positive results, with accumulated increase of 1.8%. The quarterly moving average indicator increased 0.6% between the quarters which ended in October and in September, and has had accumulated gain of 1.0% since August.

 

The comparison with October 2006 shows increase of 3.2%. There was also increase of the indicators for longer periods. The figure accumulated in the year increased 1.6% and, in the last 12 months, 1.5%, maintaining the growing trend which started in September 2006.

 

In the comparison October 07/October 06, the increase of 3.2% of the number of hours paid was the highest since January 2005 (3.1%), with positive contributions in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed and in 12 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. In terms of subsectors, the major increases in the overall result came from means of transportation (11.7%), machinery and equipment (11.1%) and metal products (10.1%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-11.9%) and wood (-4.6%) accounted for the main negative highlights.

 

Still in this comparison, the areas which accounted for the main positive impacts to the national result were: São Paulo (5.5%), Paraná (5.0%) and North and central West Region (4.1%). In the industry of São Paulo, there was increase of the number of hours paid in 12 subsectors, being the highlights: means of transportation (12.3%), machinery and equipment (11.6%) and electronic and communication machines and equipment (12.9%). In Paraná, the highlights with the major negative contributions were: means of transportation (37.3%) and machinery and equipment (12.3%); in the North and Central West Region, the most significant negative contributions to the overall result ca me from Pernambuco (-1.4%) and Ceará (-1.3%), where the subsectors of non-metallic minerals (-11.5%) and food products and beverages (-8.1%) were the major negative highlights in the two areas, respectively.

 

The index accumulated in the first ten months of the year was 1.6%, with positive contributions from eleven areas and twelve subsectors. The main highlights came from São Paulo (2.7%), Paraná (3.2%) and Northeast Region (1.5%). On the other hand, the main increases to the national result came from food products and beverages (4.2%), means of transportation (6.9%) and metal products (6.4%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-9.2%) and apparel and accessories (05.1%) were the main negative contributions. 

 

 

REAL PAYROLL

 

In October, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers increased 2.0% in relation to the immediately pervious month, marking the fifth consecutive positive rate, and accumulating increase of 4.3%. This way, the quarterly moving average indicator increased 1.1% between the quarters which ended in September and in October, having accumulated 2.6% of expansion between May and October.

 

In comparison with similar periods in the previous year, results remain positive: 6.1% in relation to October 2006 and 5.2% accumulated in the year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, changed from 4.3%, in September, to 4.4% in October, and has remained on a growing trend since December 2006 (1.3%).

 

In comparison with October last year (6.1%), the fourteen areas surveyed had increase of real payroll. The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (4.2%), due, mainly, to the rise of salaries of means of transportation (18.0%), chemical products (23.5%) and electronic and communication machines and equipment (10.4%). It is also worth mentioning Rio Grande do Sul (11.1%), Minas Gerais (10.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (12.1%).

 

In terms of subsector, considering the monthly indicator, the value of real payroll increased in 14 of the 18 industrial subsectors surveyed. The most significant positive increases came from means of transportation (17.2%), chemical products (17.0%), food products and beverages (5.5%) and metal products (14.3%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the year had increment of 5.2%, with increase of the value of real payroll in all the areas surveyed. The main impact was observed in São Paulo (4.1%), due to chemical products (14.5%), means of transportation (6.4%) and food products and beverages (3.1%). It is also worth mentioning Rio Grande do Sul (7.9%), Minas Gerais (6.0%) and the Northeast Region (6.3%). By subsector, there was increase of payroll in fourteen subsectors. The main positive impacts were those of chemical products (12.1%), means of tranportation (6.8%), food produtcs and beverages (6.3%) and mining and quarrying industry (16.9%). The most significant salary decreases occurred among paper and printing (-4.0%), wood (-8.7%) and footwear and leather articles (-2.8%).
