Between November 26 and December 7, IBGE working teams will be in the field for the implementation of the second pilot test aimed at the planning of Demographic Census 2010. The work will be done will partnership with the National Statistics and Censuses Institute of Argentina (INDEC) and the General Directorate of Statistics, Surveys and Censuses of Paraguay (DGEEC). There will be simultaneous translation of questionnaires in about a thousand households of Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), Posadas (Argentina) and Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil). Representatives of the Mercosur Joint Project for Census will participate in the event as observers. The project is formed by Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) and also Bolivia, Chile, México, Ecuador and Venezuela. The last three countries mentioned were included in the project in 2006. Representatives of other South American countries will also take part in the activities.

Field activities will provide data for the Evaluation Seminar, which will take place on November 29 and 30 and will focus on the formulation of recommendations for the coming steps of the project and on the harmonization of statistics and technologies of population censuses in the participating countries. The event will take place in Foz do Iguaçu, in Paraná, and will receive the President of IBGE, the Brazilian consul in Ciudad del Este and of the representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The group evaluation will test questions about the daily movement in frontier areas, either for work or study, or even due to other reasons, thus allowing the investigation of phenomena which are difficult to measure in census operations.

One of the main objectives of the population census is the collection of data which allow the establishment of public policies and the knowledge of the country’s reality, including size and composition of the population, overall characteristics, family structure, migration movements, schooling, labor, income and housing.
