In August, industry increased in 10 among 14 surveyed areas by the IBGE

From July to August 2007, the industrial production increased in ten among fourteen surveyed localities, in the seasonally adjusted series. The states of Amazonas (7.5%) and Espírito Santo (6.4%) brought the most pronounced changes.

 

 

From July to August 2007, the industrial production increased in ten among fourteen surveyed localities, in the seasonally adjusted series.  The states of Amazonas (7.5%) and Espírito Santo (6.4%) brought the most pronounced changes.  São Paulo (0.4%), most important industrial area of the country, registered a positive rate considerably below the national average (1.3%). The other localities with increase in production were Pernambuco (1.5%), Goiás (1.3%), Santa Catarina (1.1%), Minas Gerais (1.1%), Ceará (0.7%), Pará (0.4%) and Paraná (0.2%).  Also from July to August, the industrial activity in Rio de Janeiro was stable (0.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.2%), Northeast Region (-0.2) and Bahia (-2.6%) had decrease.

 

 


In the comparison August 07/ August 06, the result for the total of the country was growth of 6.6%.  In twelve among fourteen surveyed localities the regional indexes were predominantly positive.  Espírito Santo (22.1%), Amazonas (12.2%), Minas Gerais (10.3%), Santa Catarina (7.4%) and Paraná (6.7%) all brought results which were above the national average.  São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul (both with 6.0%), Pernambuco (5.2%), Northeast Region (2.2%) Pará (1.4%) Bahia (0.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.2%) had increases below the average.  Goiás (-0.2%) and Ceará (-0.8%) presented negative results regarding the industrial production.

 

In the indicator accumulated in the period January-August, with the exception of Ceará (-0.4%) which registered the only negative result, all the localities increased the production. Minas Gerais (8.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.1%), Paraná (7.3%), Espírito Santo (6.8%) and Pernambuco (5.9%) increased in a rhythm above the national average (5.3%), answering not only to a significant domestic demand (automobile and food products industries), but also to the maintenance of the dynamism of typically export products and the recovery of the agricultural sector.  With increase in the production were also: Santa Catarina (5.2%), São Paulo (4.7%), Pará (3.0%), Northeast Region (2.5%), Amazonas and Rio de Janeiro (both with 1.8%), Bahia (1.3%) and Goiás (1.1%).

 

 


 

 

According to the quarterly moving average index, the national industry increased since August 2006, accumulating expansion of 6.9% in this period. Following this trend, twelve among fourteen surveyed localities also had positive results in this comparison, with Minas Gerais (11.6%), Espírito Santo (10.3%), Paraná (7.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (7.3%) having a more pronounced trend of expansion, while Goiás (-1.9%) and Ceará (-1.0%) were the only two localities with losses.

 

For the total of the country a rhythm of growth was registered from the first semester of 2007 (4.8%) to the two months July-August (6.7%), both comparisons with similar periods of 2006.  This acceleration reached eight among fourteen surveyed regions, being the most pronounced in Espírito Santo, whose index changed from 4.3% to 14.2%, and in Amazonas (from 0.1% to  6.7%).  On the other hand, the major loss between the two periods occurred in Ceará (from 0.5% to –2.7%), influenced, mainly, by the textile and food and beverages sectors, which have the major participation in the industrial sector of the state.

 

 


 

 

 

AMAZONAS

 

The industrial production of Amazonas, in August, increased in the comparison with the previous month (7.5%), in the series without seasonal influence, after a decrease of 1.4% in July. In relation to the same month of the previous year, the expansion was 12.2%, major result since February 2006 (16.6%). With this, the indicator accumulated in the year changed from an almost insignificant change in July (0.2%) to an increase of 1.8 % in August.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, which had reduction in the rhythm of growth since April, presented now a positive result (0.5%), which did not occur since June of the previous year (0.9%).

 

In the comparison with August 2006, six among eleven segments registered positive rates, but the expansion of 12.2% was determined, mainly, by the two-digit growth of other transportation equipment (21.7%), food products and beverages (19.6%), edition and printing (86.3%) and machines and equipment  (68.4%).  In these sectors stood out the increase in the manufacturing of motorcycles, influenced mainly by the domestic market; manufacturing of syrups for beverage elaboration; DVDs; and microwave ovens, respectively.  On the other hand, the most significant negative influence came from electronic material and communication equipment (-2.7%) although it presented the best result since March 2006 (13.7%).

 

In the indicator accumulated in the year (1.8%) compared to the same period of 2006 six among eleven segments had increase in the production.  The most significant contributions came from food products and beverages (20.1%), edition and printing (74.3%), other transportation equipment (17.2%) and machines and equipment (64.6%), mainly, due to the items: manufacturing of syrups for beverage elaboration; DVDs; motorcycles; and microwave ovens. On the other hand, electronic material and communication equipment (-24.7%) remained with the major negative influence, influenced, mainly, by the decrease in the manufacturing of mobile telephones.

 

PARÁ


In August, the industry of Pará had a positive change of 0.4% compared to the previous month, in the series without seasonal influence, after increasing 2.3% in July. In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the sector increased 1.4%. The indicators accumulated, in the year (3.0%) and in the last twelve months (6.0%) showed increase, although below the one observed in July (3.3% and 7.4%, respectively).

 

The increase of 1.4%, compared to the same month of the previous year, in the industry of the state was influenced, mainly, by the performance of mining and quarrying (10.1%), once the industry of manufacturing continues showing losses (-5.7%). In the first segment stood out the increase in the extraction of iron ores.  In the industry of manufacturing, three activities also had increase, standing out the growth observed in cellulose and paper (30.0%).  Among the two segments which registered negative rates, the major influence on the overall average was observed in the sector of food products and beverages (-32.5%), which decreased, mainly due to the production of frozen crustaceans.

 

In the growth of 3.0%, in the index accumulated January-August, two among six surveyed activities had positive rates, standing out the favorable performance of mining and quarrying (9.6%), influenced mainly by the extraction of iron ores. In basic metallurgy (4.5%) stood out the major manufacturing of aluminum oxide.  On the other hand, among the four activities which had decrease in the production, food products and beverages (-16.0%) brought the major negative contribution on the overall average.

 

NORTHEAST   


The industry of the Northeast, in August, changed negatively by 0.2% compared to July, in the series without seasonal influence, after three consecutive positive results, period in which it accumulated gain of 4.0%.  In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, there was an increase of 2.2%.  In the indicator accumulated in the year, the sector increased by 2.5%.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months increased 2.7%, slightly below the result of 2.9% of July.

 

In the comparison August 07/ August 06, the industry of the Northeast increased by 2.2% with positive rates in seven among eleven surveyed segments. The sector of food products and beverages brought the main positive result, followed by non-metallic minerals (10.2%) and chemical products (2.0%).  In these activities, the highlights were the items beer and draft beer, ground and toasted coffee; cement, bottles, demijohns and glass flasks; high density polyethylene and rubber of styrene – butadiene, respectively.  On the other hand, the major negative results were observed in cellulose and paper, and in electric machines, equipment and material, both with a decrease of 14.6%.

 

In the indicator accumulated January-August (2.5%), six among eleven surveyed segments had increase in the production, standing out the positive contribution which came from food products and beverages (8.6%), influenced mainly by the increase in the manufacturing of soft drinks and crystallized sugar.  It is also worth mentioning the positive results of non-metallic minerals (9.4%) and chemical products (2.4%), in which stood out the items cement and dyes and varnishes for construction, respectively.  On the other hand, the major negative influences came from cellulose and paper (-6.1%), due to the diminishment in the production, mainly, of cellulose; and of mining and quarrying (-2.9%), due to the decrease in the extraction of petroleum.

 

CEARÁ


In August, the industrial production of Ceará seasonally adjusted increased 0.7% in relation to the immediately previous month, changing in part the considerable decrease observed in the previous month (-5.0%).  In the comparisons with similar periods of the previous year, the monthly indicator (-0.8%) and the accumulated indicator in the year (-0.4%) had decrease.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months registered expansion of 2.7%, maintaining a downward trend since January (7.0%).

 

In the monthly indicator, the industry of the state decreased by 0.8%, with negative results in six among ten surveyed segments.  The textile sector (-9.9%) was the main negative influence, as a consequence of the lower production of cotton cloths and threads. It is also worth mentioning electric machines, equipment and material (-50.2%), due to the decrease in the production of transformers; and apparel (-17.5%), due to the reduction in the manufacturing of long pants and apparel for professional use.  On the other hand, the main positive influence came from footwear and leather articles (17.8%), as a consequence of the major production of plastic footwear and leather. Also brought relevant positive contributions on the overall index the sectors of basic metallurgy, with an atypical growth of 229.8%, which had a low base of comparison, as a consequence of a stoppage for reform in an important company of the sector in August 2006; and chemical products (14.6%), influenced by the items vaccines and dyes and varnishes.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year showed a negative change of 0.4%, with decreases in five among ten surveyed sectors.  The main negative contribution came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-35.4%), due to the lower production of gasoline and liquefied gas of petroleum (GLP); followed by textiles (-6.9%), as a consequence of a decrease in the production of cotton threads and cloths; and electric machines, equipment and material (-27.8%), influenced by the reduction in the manufacturing of transformers.  On the other hand, the most significant positive results were observed in food products and beverages (7.8%), as a consequence of the major production of peanuts and toasted cashew nuts, and soft drinks; and in chemical products (21.0%), due to the increase in the manufacturing of dyes and varnishes for construction and veterinary vaccines.

 

 

PERNAMBUCO

 

The industrial production of Pernambuco, in August, seasonally adjusted, increased 1.5% in relation to the immediately previous month, after decreasing 4.4% in July.  In the comparisons with similar periods of 2006, the monthly indicator (5.2%) and indicator accumulated in the year (5.9%) presented positive results.  The annualized rate, index accumulated in the last twelve months showed a slight gain between July (5.5%) and August (5.8%).

 

The monthly indicator increased 5.2% with four among eleven surveyed activities showing expansion.  The major positive contribution came from chemical products (34.0%), influenced, mainly, by the increase in the manufacturing of rubber of styrene – butadiene and, in a lower degree, by the increases in the items dyes and varnishes for construction and calcium hypochlorites.  It is also worth mentioning the positive results of non-metallic minerals (15.4%), due to the increment in the production of bottles, demijohns and glasses for packaging; and ceramic sinks, bathtubs and bidets; and rubber and plastic (10.5%), due to the major manufacturing of plastic films. On the other hand, the most relevant negative influences came from basic metallurgy (-3.8%) and metal products (-4.0%), influenced, mainly, by the decrease in the production of carbon steel square bars, and steel wool, respectively.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year presented expansion of 5.9%, with growth in eight industrial sectors.  The main positive influences came from chemical products (21.9%), food products and beverages (3.6%) and metal products (11.7%).  These sectors had, respectively, increases in the production of paints and varnishes for construction, and rubber of styrene – butadiene; ice-creams and crystallized sugar; and aluminum cans to be used as containers.  Among those with decrease, the major influences were observed in machines, equipment and electric material (-5.6%) and footwear and leather articles (-10.4%), as a consequence of the lower production of electric batteries and cells; and cattle furs and leathers.

 

 

BAHIA

 

 


In August, the industrial production of Bahia seasonally adjusted fell by 2.6% in relation to July, after growth of 4.9% in the previous month.  In the comparisons with similar periods of the previous year, the results were positive: 0.8% in relation to August 2006 and 1.3% in the indicator accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months registered 1.2%, the same result of July.

 

The monthly indicator (0.8%) showed positive rates in four among nine surveyed activities.  The main positive contribution came from food products and beverages (14.8%), as a consequence, mainly of the major production of beer and draft beer, refined soybean oil and powdered milk.  It is also worth mentioning, basic metallurgy (5.6%), due to the increase in the production of gold bars, and unconnected aluminum in raw form; and rubber and plastic (14.5%), as a consequence of increment in the production of demijohns, bottles, flasks and other similar plastic products, including PET packages and plastic packages for other food products.  On the other hand, the major negative influence was observed in cellulose and paper (-17.3%), influenced, mainly, by the decrease in the production of non-coated paper and cellulose.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased 1.3%, with a positive result in five among nine industrial sectors, coming from food products and beverages (13.0%) the major positive contribution.  In this segment, the main highlight was observed in the items flours and “pellets” of the extraction of soybean oil, and raw soybean oil. Other positive results came from chemical products (1.3%) and rubber and plastic (13.5%), due, respectively, to the major manufacturing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and plastic packages for food products.  On the other hand, the main decreases were observed in cellulose and paper (-6.4%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-1.6%), as a consequence, respectively, of the reduction in the production of cellulose and naphthas.

 

 

MINAS GERAIS


The industrial production of Minas Gerais increased 1.1%, from July to August 2007, already seasonally adjusted.  It was the fourth consecutive positive result and in this period the growth accumulated was 4.4%.  In the comparison with August 2006, the rate was positive (10.3%) and in the indicator accumulated in the period January-August there was expansion of 8.7%.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months showed acceleration of the growing rhythm from July (7.0%) to August (7.5%).

 

The expansion of 10.3% in the monthly indicator showed the increases of the mining and quarrying (12.4%) and manufacturing industries (9.9%). In this last one, ten among twelve surveyed activities showed increase, with the main highlights observed in automotive vehicles (23.9%), machines and equipment (43.1%) and metal products (23.1%).  In these segments stood out the items: automobiles, digging machines and motor grades, and iron and steel structures.  On the other hand, basic metallurgy, with decrease of 0.5%, brought the main negative influence.

 

The indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year showed growth of 8.7%, with positive results in the manufacturing industry (8.5%) as well as in mining and quarrying (10,1%). This last segment stood out as the second major positive contribution for the overall average, standing out the performance of iron ores.  In the industry of manufacturing, ten among twelve surveyed activities increased, standing out: automotive vehicles (19.1%), machines and equipment (23.0%) and metal products (20.0%). In these segments, the major influences came from the items: automobiles; portable electric household articles and motor grades; and iron and steel structures.  Non-metallic minerals (-1.4%) and tobacco (-3.0%) stood out among the segments with decrease, due to the diminishment in the manufacturing of cement and cigarettes.

 

 

ESPÍRITO SANTO


In August, the industrial production of Espírito Santo increased 6.4% compared to July, in the series without seasonal influence, fourth consecutive positive rate, accumulating 15.0% in this period.  In the comparison August 07/ August 06, the industry of the state increased 22.1%, twentieth consecutive positive result.  As a consequence, the indicator accumulated changed from 4.6% in July to 6.8% in August.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, also had a major rhythm in August (8.1%) compared to July (6.4%).

 

In the comparison with August 2006, the industrial production increased 22.1%, being slightly below the industry of manufacturing (25.2%).  Mining and quarrying brought 15.7% of expansion, due to the major production of crude oils of petroleum and iron ores, as a consequence of the dynamism in the exports of basic goods.  In the industry of manufacturing, the major influence on the overall index came from cellulose and paper (52.2%)  influenced by the production of cellulose pastes, were the high rate occurred due to the comparison with a low base, as a consequence of stoppage for maintenance in August of the previous year of a great company of the sector.  It is also worth mentioning the performance of basic metallurgy (23.2%), due to the major production of steel slugs, blocks and ingots.  The only segment with reduction in the production was non-metallic minerals (-1.6%), showing the decrease in the production of ceramic plates and tiles and marble.

 

The indicator accumulated in the eight first months of the year increased 6.8%, compared to the same period of the previous year, standing out the positive result of mining and quarrying (15.7%) in the composition of the overall rate. It is also worth mentioning the sectors of food products and beverages (13.1%) and cellulose and paper (2.8%), influenced by the items cacao bonbons and cellulose, respectively.

 

 

RIO DE JANEIRO

 


The industrial performance of Rio de Janeiro was stable from July to August, in the series with seasonal adjustment, after three consecutive negative rates, accumulating in this period loss of 2.3%.  In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the sector registered a rate close to stability (0.2%).  With this, the indicator accumulated in the eight first months of the year was 1.8%, slightly below the indexes of June (2.3%) and July (2.0%).  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, increased 1.0%, the same result of July.

 

In the monthly indicator (0.2%), only five among thirteen surveyed activities had expansion.  The main highlight was automotive vehicles (28.9%), which for the fifth consecutive month had a two-digit rate.  In this segment stood out the manufacturing of trucks, favored not only by the recovery of the agricultural sector, but also by the major demand of the foreign market.  The segments of non-metallic minerals (15.3%) and rubber and plastic (21.6%) also brought relevant positive contributions, influenced mainly by the items concrete paste and cement, in the first and tires, in the second.  Among the eight activities which reduced the production, the major influence on the overall average came from other chemical products (-15.9%) followed by food products (-7.7%), edition and printing (-5.2%) and textiles (-18.4%).

 

In the indicator accumulated January-August, compared to the same period of 2006, the industry of the state increased by 1.8%, influenced by the favorable performance of the manufacturing industry (2.3%), once mining and quarrying  (-0.4%) continues decreasing in 2007.  In the first segment, eight among thirteen surveyed segments had positive rates, with basic metallurgy (14.8%), still favored by the low base of comparison observed in the first months of 2006, bringing the main influence on the overall result.  It is worth mentioning the positive influences of edition and printing (10.9%) and automotive vehicles (12.9%), influenced mainly by the major production of newspapers and trucks.  Among the five segments with negative rates, the main contributions came from pharmaceuticals (-14.4%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-6.6%), as a consequence of the major part of products with decrease in the first segment, and the falls in the manufacturing of the items gasoline, diesel oil and basic lubricant oils, in the second.

 

 

SÃO PAULO


 

The industrial production of São Paulo showed in August, positive change of 0.4% compared to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having a negative change of 0.2% in July.  In the comparison with the same month of the previous year the growth was 6.0% and in the indicator accumulated in the year the increase was 4.7%.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months showed gain of rhythm from July (3.6%) to August (3.9%).

 

In relation to August 2006 (6.0%), the major part (17) of the twenty surveyed activities contributed positively for the formation of the overall rate, with the main highlights, in terms of participation, coming from machines and equipment (16.4%), pharmaceuticals (18.4%) and automotive vehicles (6.5%).  The increase observed in the first segment occurred mainly due to the manufacturing of harvesting machines and loader-transporters; in the second, the highlights were remedies; and in the third, automobiles.  On the other hand, edition and printing (-7.2%), cellulose and paper (-8.9%) and electric machines, equipment and material (-3.7%) were responsible for the negative results, influenced mainly by the decreases observed in printed matter; cellulose; and transformers.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased 4.7%, with sixteen segments influencing positively this result.  The main positive contributions came from machines and equipment (15.5%), electronic material and communication equipment (13.8%) and pharmaceuticals (9.9%), influenced, mainly, by the increases observed in plant centers and harvesting machines; mobile telephones and commutation equipment; and remedies, respectively.  On the other hand, the major negative influences came from electric machines, equipment and material (-7.9%), edition and printing (-2.3%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-1.3%), especially due to the reduction in the manufacturing of transformers; magazines; and liquefied gas of petroleum.

 

 

PARANÁ

 


The industrial production of Paraná increased 0.2% in August compared to the immediately previous month, already seasonally adjusted.  It was the third consecutive positive result, accumulating in the period growth of 1.5%.  In relation to August 2006, the monthly index was positive (6.7%).  The indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year showed growth of 7.3% and in the last twelve months registered acceleration from July (4.5%) to August  (5.1%).

 

In the monthly indicator, the production of the state increased 6.7%, with nine among fourteen surveyed activities with positive rates.  The major favorable contribution in the formation of the overall average was observed in automotive vehicles (33.2%), due to the increase in the production of trucks.  Machines and equipment (12.4%) and electric machines, equipment and material (48.8%) also brought positive results.  In these sectors stood out the increase in the manufacturing of the following items: harvesting machines and agricultural trucks; and parts and pieces for interruption equipment and optic fiber wires, respectively.  On the other hand, the major negative influences were observed in other chemical products (-10.3%) and non-metallic minerals (-13.0%), as a consequence, mainly, of the decrease in adobes or fertilizers and cement, respectively.

 

The indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year showed growth of 7.3%, with eleven segments presenting positive rates.  The major favorable contributions came from automotive vehicles (20.1%), machines and equipment (19.1%) and other chemical products (28.8%), due, mainly, to the increase in the production of the items: automobiles and trucks; harvesting machines and agricultural trucks; and adobes and fertilizers. On the other hand, the main negative results came from petroleum refining (-4.7%) and wood (-9.1%), standing out the decrease in the manufacturing of diesel oil and gasoline; and plywood and veneer plates, respectively.

 

 

 

SANTA CATARINA

 


In August, the industrial production of Santa Catarina increased 1.1% compared to July, in the series seasonally adjusted, after two consecutive negative rates, accumulating loss of 2.4% in the period.  In the comparison with similar month of the previous year, the sector increased 7.4% and continued showing positive indexes since January of this year.  With this, the indicator accumulated, in the first eight months of the year (5.2%) as well as in the last twelve months (3.8%), showed higher results than in the previous month (4.9% and 3.3%, respectively).

 

In the monthly indicator, the increase of 7.4% in the overall average of the industry of the state showed the positive performance in nine among eleven surveyed segments.  The main influence in the formation of this result came from food products, expansion of 11.5%, influenced by the expansion in 75% of the surveyed products, standing out the items poultry pluck, giblets and meats and cured meats.  It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions, although in a lower scale, registered by automotive vehicles (21.4%); electric machines, equipment and material (22.3%); rubber and plastic (13.9%) and machines and equipment (5.2%).  In these segments, stood out the items: buses and trucks bodies; electric motors; plastic pieces and accessories for the automobile industry; and refrigerators and freezers.  On the other hand, the only two adverse results were registered by textiles (-1.3%) and wood (-3.9%).

 

The production accumulated January-August, compared to the same period of 2006, showed expansion of 5.2%, with seven among eleven surveyed segments registering increase.  The leadership, in terms of influence, continues with the sector of food products (10.1%), influenced by the major production of poultry pluck, giblets and meats, still considerably benefited by the foreign market.  It is also worth mentioning the increase observed in machines and equipment (8.6%); automobile vehicles (7.8%) and electric machines, equipment and material (11.7%), supported, mainly, in the major manufacturing of soft drinks and freezers; buses and trucks bodies; and electric motors.  Among the four sectors which reduced the production, basic metallurgy, with decrease of 1.5%, brought the main influence in the formation of the overall index.

 

 

 

RIO GRANDE DO SUL

 

 


In August, the industry of Rio Grande do Sul registered a negative change of 0.2% in relation to the previous month, in the series without seasonal influence, after growing 0.5% in July.  In the comparison with the same month of the previous year the growth was 6.0%.  The indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year increased 8.1%, in relation to the same period of the previous year.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months (5.8%) showed major rhythm in relation to July (5.0%).

 

In the monthly indicator, the industry of the state increased 6.0%, influenced by the increases in seven among fourteen surveyed segments.  Among these segments, the major positive results came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (44.6%), machines and equipment (35.0%) and automotive vehicles (30.8%). In these segments stood out the items naphtha for petrochemical, gasoline; harvesting machines, hydraulic tools of non-electric motor; and axis and semi-axis and other pieces for transmission, respectively.  On the other hand, the major negative results were observed in the sector of tobacco (-27.7%), due to the lower production of manufactured tobacco; and edition and printing (-19.4%), which presented reduction, mainly, in the production of standardized newspapers and printed matter. 

 

In the expansion of 8.1% observed in the indicator accumulated January-August, stood out the positive performances of nine among fourteen surveyed activities.  The major increments in the overall result were observed in the industries of petroleum refining and alcohol production (41.4%), machines and equipment (31.8%) and automotive vehicles (29.7%), in which stood out the increases in the production of gasoline, naphtha for petrochemical, hydraulic tools of non-electric motor, harvesting machines, axis and semi-axis and other pieces for transmission and automobiles, respectively.  On the other hand, the industries of footwear and leather articles (-10.0%) and tobacco (-5.9%) brought the major negative results, in which stood out the decreases in leather footwear; and manufactured tobacco, respectively.

 

GOIÁS

 

In the month of August, the industrial activity of Goiás increased 1.3% compared to July, in the series with seasonal adjustment, after growing 4.2% in July.  In the comparison August 07/August 06, the industry of the state fell 0.2%, showing the fifth consecutive negative result in this comparison.  The indicators accumulated were positive.  In the indicator accumulated in the year the rate was 1.1% and in the last twelve months 1.7%.

 

In the comparison with August 2006, the production fell 0.2%, influenced by the decrease in chemical products (-23.6%), as a consequence of the decrease in the production of remedies and soaps for domestic use.  The other segments brought positive rates, standing out food products and beverages (2.9%), sector of major participation in the industrial structure of Goiás, influenced mainly by the increase in the production of mayonnaise.

 

The indicator accumulated, in these eight months of the year, increased by 1.1% compared to the same period of the previous year, showing slow difference in relation to previous results: June (1.5%) and July (1.3%).  The expansion of 12.9% in mining and quarrying, influenced by the increase in the production of amianthus, contributed with the major influence in the formation of the rate. In the industry of manufacturing (0.1%), the positive highlight was registered by non-metallic minerals (11.4%), as a consequence of the increase in the production of cement and fiber cement panels and tiles. On the other hand, the segments of chemical products (-3.7%) and food products and beverages (-0.6%) influenced negatively.
