Industrial employment maintains expansion with rate of 0.3% in May

Industry registered growth in employment for the fifth consecutive month, with an increase of 0.3% compared to April/07, in the series seasonally adjusted, accumulating 2.0% in the period.  In the other comparisons, the results are also positive: 2.0% compared to May/2006, 1.5% in the index accumulated in the year and 0.8% in the index accumulated in the last twelve months.

In May, the industrial employment shows a positive change of 0.3% compared to April, in the series without seasonal influence.  Similarly to the trend of growth that is being observed in the industrial production, this indicator is positive for five consecutive months, period in which it accumulates 2.0% of expansion.  This way, the quarterly moving average index also increased (0.4%) and has as ascending trend since last February, accumulating gain of 1.3% in the period.

In the comparisons with 2006, the results are also positive: 2.0% in relation to May and 1.5% in the indicator accumulated in the first five months of the year.  The annualized rate, index accumulated in the last twelve months, with rate of 0.8%, maintains an ascending trend since October.

In the increment of 2.0% compared to May 2006, major increment since May 2005, there was an increase in the industrial employment in all the surveyed localities (fourteen).  The main highlights, in terms of participation in the total of the country, were São Paulo (2.3%), North and Central West Region  (3.1%) and Northeast Region (2.1%).  In the first locality, which answers for almost 40.0% of the number of workers in the industry, thirteen among eighteen sectors had positive results, standing out the results of machines and equipment (8.5%), other products of the manufacturing industry (9.5%) and transportation  (3.2%). In the two other mentioned localities, the most relevant influences came from food products and beverages (10.0%) and wood (4.6%), in the North and Central West Region, and petroleum refining and alcohol production (35.3%) and food products and beverages (2.5%), in the Northeast Region.  It is also worth mentioning the first positive change in the employment of Rio Grande do Sul (0.2%) since September 2004.

Still in the analysis of the monthly index, among the thirteen sectors which influenced positively the overall average, stood out the contribution of food products and beverages (4.0%), machines and equipment (6.8%) and transportation (5.5%).  On the other hand, the most significant negative results came from apparel (-4.2%), footwear and leather articles (-4.3%) and wood (-4.5%).

In the indicator accumulated January-May, it can be observed increase of 1.5% in the employed personnel in relation to the same period of the previous year, with twelve localities and twelve groups contributing positively.  Among the localities, the main contributions were observed in São Paulo (2.1%), Northeast Region (2.4%) and North and Central West Region (2.6%), while, on the other hand, the negative influences came from Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%) and Minas Gerais (-0.3%). In terms of sectors, food products and beverages (5.5%), metal products (5.1%) and transportation (4.3%) stood out with the main positive results, while footwear and leather articles (-6.8%) and apparel (-5.2%) answered for the main negative contributions. 

In summary, a positive scenario of the industrial activity in the first five months of the year is also observed in the indexes of employment that have positive results, in the comparisons with similar periods of the previous year as in the evolution in the year of 2007.  The monthly index increased since July 2006 and registered its major rate of the last twenty-four months; in the comparisons without seasonal influences, employment had positive indexes since last January.

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

The number of hours paid to the workers of industry, in May, changed by 0.2% in relation to April, in the series without seasonal influence, second consecutive positive result, accumulating 1.2% of increase between May and March of this year.  In the quarterly moving average index, the change of 0.1% between the quarters closed in May and April, was the fifth positive consecutive result, accumulating, since January, an increase of 1.2%.

In the comparison with a similar period of the previous year, the results continue positive: the monthly indicator registered increase of 1.9% and the index accumulated in the year increased by 1.2%.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months reached 0.9% in May and maintained the trend of growth of the last months. 

In the comparison May 07/ May 06, the number of hours paid increased by 1.9%, due to the positive contributions of fourteen localities and twelve among eighteen surveyed groups. In terms of sectors, the major increases came from food products and beverages (5.2%), machines and equipment (6.5%) and transportation (5.4%).  On the other hand, apparel (-4.9%) and footwear and leather articles (-5.7%) brought the main negative results.

Also in the monthly indicator, the localities that brought the most important positive results in the total of the country were São Paulo (2.1%), Paraná (3.2%) and Northeast Region (2.1%). In São Paulo, eleven among eighteen surveyed activities increased the number of hours paid, especially for other products of the manufacturing industry (14.8%), machines and equipment (6.6%), electronic material and communication equipment (7.2%). In the industry of Paraná, the main positive influences were observed in transportation (28.8%) and food products and beverages (8.0%); and in the Northeast Region, the most significant influence was observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (40.2%).

The indicator accumulated January-May registered increase of 1.2%, with twelve localities and also twelve sectors showing expansion. The main positive results, among the localities, came from São Paulo (1.5%), Northeast Region (2.4%) and Paraná (2.6%).  On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-2.1%) and Minas Gerais (-1.0%) brought the only negative results.  In the analysis by sectors, the most significant positive influences came from food products and beverages (6.3%), transportation (4.0%) and metal products (3.8%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-8.3%) and apparel (-6.7%) brought the main negative contributions.

REAL PAYROLL 

In May, the value of real payroll of the workers of the industry seasonally adjusted fell by 0.7% in relation to the immediately previous month, after increasing by 1.4% in April. With this result, the quarterly moving average indicator decreased by 1.0% between the quarters closed in April and May, the first negative rate in this year, after increasing for four consecutive months, accumulating 6.6% of increase in the period.

In the comparison with similar period of the previous year, the results continue positive: 4.3% in the monthly indicator and 4.6% in the index accumulated in the year. The annualized rate, indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, registered increment of 3.0% in May and continues an ascending trend since December 2006. 

The value of the real payroll increased by 4.3% in comparison with May of the previous year, with positive rates in all the surveyed localities.  The main contribution came from São Paulo (2.1%), due mainly, to the increase of salaries in transportation (2.8%), chemical products (5.8%) electronic material and communication equipment (6.1%). Following, it is worth mentioning the positive result of the North and Central West Region (11.7%), influenced mainly, by the sectors of food products and beverages (17.0%), transportation (41.8%), due to the payment of profit participation in an important company of the sector, and non-metallic minerals (25.1%).  Also, stood out the positive contributions from Rio Grande do Sul (6.3%) and Minas Gerais (5.9%). These states were influenced, respectively, by chemical products  (43.2%), due mainly to the payment of accumulated extra hours, metal products  (30.4%) and transportation (18.0%); and food products and beverages (8.6%), metal products (13.3%) and mining and quarrying (11.4%). 

In the analysis by sectors, still in the monthly indicator, the value of the real payroll increased in fourteen among eighteen investigated sectors, with the major positive influences coming from transportation (5.0%), food products and beverages (5.0%), chemical products (8.7%) and mining and quarrying (15.4%). On the other hand, the main negative influences were observed in footwear and leather articles (-4.3%), wood (-5.7%) and rubber and plastic (-0.9%).

The indicator accumulated in the year increased by 4.6%, with growth in all the surveyed localities.  The highlights were São Paulo (3.2%), Northeast Region (7.4%) and Minas Gerais (6.0%). In  São Paulo, it can be mentioned the indexes of chemical products (8.0%), food products and beverages  (4.4%) and non-metallic minerals (12.2%).  In the Northeast Region, food products and beverages (10.6%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (29.5%) and footwear and leather articles (8.0%) brought the most significant contributions; and in Minas Gerais, the main influences came from mining and quarrying (16.5%), basic metallurgy (6.3%) and food products and beverages (10.2%).

In terms of sectors, fourteen segments increased the value of the payroll, standing out food products and beverages (8.2%), chemical products (8.6%) and mining and quarrying (15.7%). On the other hand, paper and printing (-3.5%), wood (-6.3%) and footwear and leather articles (-3.1%) influenced negatively the overall result.
