IPCA was 0.28% in June

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) changed by 0.28% in June and had the same rate as in May (0.28%). The index accumulated in the year was 2.08%.

 

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) changed by 0.28% in June and had the same rate as in May (0.28%). The index accumulated in the year was 2.08%, above the figure for the same period in 2006 (1.54%). The index accumulated in the last twelve months was 3.69%, higher than the 3.18% obtained  in the immediately previous twelve months. In June 2006, the index was -0.21%.

 

Prices in the group food products and beverages rose by 1.09% and contributed with 0.23 percentage points to the overall index, accounting for 82% of the IPCA in June. In May, the change in this group was 0.16%. The main negative contribution was that of pasteurized milk, which, due to its reduced supply, represented the biggest individual contribution in the month: 0.11 percentage points. Milk, which is an important item in the diet of families, had relative participation of about 1% in the IPCA weighting averaging figures. The prices rise of this product reached 12.40% in June. This way, dairy products also rose: powdered milk (3.45%), cheese (2.77%), condensed milk (2.74%) and heavy cream (1.61%). The rise of milk and dairy products was 7.35%. The highlights in the group food products were “carioca” beans, which rose by 15.37%, and eggs, which are now 4.93% more expensive.

 

Besides food products, apparel (which changed by 0.91% and contribution of 0.06 percentage points) and the salaries of domestic workers (which changed by 1.11% and contribution of 0.03 percentage points) were other highlights in June.

 

On the other hand, fuel prices fell by 1.69%. The biggest production of sugarcane caused reduction of the prices of alcohol in plants, which resulted in decrease by 12.35% of the liter of fuel alcohol in pumps. It was the lowest individual contribution to the index of this month: -0.05 percentage points. The price of gasoline, which was affected by alcohol, fell by 0.77% and represented contribution of -0.04 percentage points to the index.

 

Among the indexes by area, the highest result was that of Rio de Janeiro (0.37%), being the highlight the rise of 2.62% in of salaries of domestic workers. The lowest result was obtained in Fortaleza (-0.09%), where there was fall by 0.24%.

 

 

To calculate the index of the month, prices collected in the period May 29th to June 27th (reference) were compared to those charged from April 28th to May 28th (base). The IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980; it refers to families with monetary income ranging from 01 to 40 minimum wages and headed by a salaried worker. It includes nine metropolitan areas of the country, besides the municipalities of Goiânia and Brasília. 

 

INPC changed by 0.31%

 

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) changed by 0.31% in June. This result was above the May figure (0.26%). Considering the June index, the result accumulated in the year was 2.20% and was above the rate of last year (1.06%). For the last 12 months, the figure was 3.97%, also above the result of 3.57% relative to the immediately previous months. In June 2006, the index was -0.07%. In terms of the June index, food products changed by 0.93%, whereas non-food products changed by 0.08%.

 

The highest index by areas was obtained in São Paulo (0.51%). The lowest result was that of Fortaleza (-0.13%). The table below shows the indexes by areas surveyed.
