In September, industrial employment increased by 0.4%

From August to September, the employment in industry increased by 0.4% in the series without seasonal adjustment.   The result changed a decrease of 0.2% between July and August.  In the comparison with September 2005, the indicator had a positive change (0.1%).  In the longer comparisons, the rate was negative in the index accumulated in the year (-0.3%) and stable in the index accumulated in 12 months (-0.4%), compared to the result of August 2006 (-0.4%).  The quarterly rates were positive compared to the same period of 2005 (0.2%) as well as compared to the immediately previous quarter (0.4%), in the series with seasonal adjustment.  The number of paid hours increased by 0.6% compared to August/06.  In the comparison with the previous year, the monthly and quarterly indicators changed by 0.3%  and 0.1% respectively;  in the indexes  accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, the rates fell by 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively.  The real payroll increased by 0.1% compared to August, also in the seasonal adjusted  series.  In the other comparisons, the indicators also were positive: 1.8% (monthly index), 1.3% (third quarter), 0.8% (index accumulated in the year) and 1.0% (index accumulated in the last 12 months).

The indicator of the quarterly moving average of the industrial employment showed change of 0.2% between the quarters closed in September and August, maintaining the positive trend which began in 2006, which enabled, in the period, an accumulated growth of 0.9%.

In the monthly index, 8 among 14 areas and 10 among 18 sectors increased the number of workers in relation to September 2005.  The North and Central West Regions (10.1%), followed by the Northeast Region (1.7%) and São Paulo (0.5%) brought the most relevant influences for the overall result, standing out in the three localities the segment of Food products and beverages.  The main negative results were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-8.7%), Minas Gerais (-1.3%) and Paraná (-1.5%).

In national level, the groups which contributed with the major positive results were Food products and beverages (7.0%), Petroleum refining and alcohol production (16.6%) and Transportation (2.4%).  On the other hand, negative results were observed in Footwear and leather articles (-13.6%), Apparel (-7.8%) and Machines and equipment (-4.3%).

In the comparisons with the same quarter of the previous year, the period July-September showed increase of 0.2%, changing a sequence of three quarters in fall.  Among the indexes of the second (-0.4%) and third (0.2%) quarters, 11 among 14 localities showed increase in the number of employed persons, especially  Pernambuco, which changed from 2.7% to 6.5%, a performance directly associated to the harvest of sugar cane.

In the index accumulated in the year, the number of employed persons decreased by  0.3%, with 8 localities and 11 groups influencing negatively the overall index.  In national level, the main downward results were observed in Footwear and leather articles (-13.1%), Machines and equipment (-7.6%) and Apparel (-5.4%). Among the localities, Rio Grande do Sul (-8.9%), Paraná (-2.7%) and Northeast Region (-1.5%) answered for the main negative results. The North and Central West Regions (9.6%), São Paulo (0.7%) and Minas Gerais (1.0%) contributed positively for the overall average.  Among the sectors, the main positive influences were observed in Food products and beverages (8.1%), Electrical, electronic and communication equipment (5.0%) and Petroleum refining and Alcohol production (13.2%).

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID


In September, the number of hours paid to the workers of industry increased by 0.6% in relation to August, in the series with seasonal adjustment. Nevertheless, the indicator of quarterly moving average continued negative, decreasing 0.1% between the quarters closed in September and August.

The comparisons with similar periods of the previous year register different results.  The monthly and quarterly indicators had positive changes of 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively.  The indicators for broader periods, index accumulated in the year and index accumulated in the last 12 months, fell by 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively.


In the comparison September 06 / September 05, the number of hours paid had positive change of 0.3%.  For the result contributed 8 among 14 localities and 9 among 18 surveyed groups.  In the analysis by sectors, the major results were observed in Food products and beverages (5.6%), Petroleum refining and alcohol production (17.1%) and Electrical, electronic and communication equipment (6.7%). The activities Apparel (-8.5%) and Footwear and leather articles (-8.2%) brought the main negative results.


Still in the monthly comparison, the localities which enabled the expansion of the national indicators were the North and Central West Regions (9.2%), São Paulo (0.9%) and Northeast Region (2.5%).  In the North and Central West Regions, 12 among 18 activities increased the number of hours paid, especially Food products and beverages (25.3%), Wood (8.7%) and Chemical products (17.4%).  In São Paulo, stood out Other products of the manufacturing industry (14.7%) and Electrical, electronic and communication equipment (7.9%).  In the industry of the Northeast, the most significant increase was observed by Food products and beverages (5.7%).  Negative influence on the national index were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-7.4%) and Paraná (-2.6%), with decreases in Footwear and leather articles (-16.9%) and Wood (-18.1%).

In quarterly analysis, compared to same period of 2005, after three negative results, the number of hours paid changed positively in the third quarter of 2006 (0.1%).  Between the index of the second and third quarters, nine activities and nine localities increased their rates.  In the analysis by regions, the major increases were observed in Rio de Janeiro, which changed from -1.1% to 2.3%; and Bahia (from 0.0% to 3.2%).

The index accumulated in the year registered negative change (-0.1%), due to the diminishment in the number of hours paid in seven localities and nine sectors. Rio Grande do Sul (-8.0%), Paraná (-4.5%) and Santa Catarina (-3.2%) answered, respectively, by the main negative results.  On the other hand, the major positive results came from the North and Central West Regions (9.2%) and São Paulo (1.8%).  The main decreases in the total of the country came from the activities Machines and equipment (-6.4%) and Footwear and leather articles (-7.9%).  On the other hand, Food products and beverages (6.0%) and Electrical, electronic and communication equipment (8.8%) registered the main positive contributions.

REAL PAYROLL


In September, the real payroll value of the workers of industry, in the series seasonally adjusted, had a slight positive change (0.1%) in relation to the immediately previous month, after increasing by 1.0% between July and August.  The quarterly moving average changed by 0.2%, third consecutive positive result, period in which it accumulated 0.6%.

The comparisons with similar periods of the previous year continued positive: 1.8% in the monthly index, 1.3% in the third quarter, 0.8% in the index accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months (1.0%) had a slight deceleration compared to August (1.2%).

In the monthly indicator, the real payroll showed increase of 1.8%, with positive rates in 11 among 14 surveyed localities.  The major positive contribution was observed in São Paulo (1.5%), due, mainly, to Chemical products (33.6%), Electrical, electronic and communication equipment (24.8%) and Paper and printing (3.7%). Following, Minas Gerais (7.7%), due mainly to the increase in Basic metallurgy (13.7%), Electrical, electronic and communication equipment  (43.9%) and Mining and quarrying (17.1%); and the Northeast Region (4.3%), under the influence of Food products and beverages (8.5%), Petroleum refining and alcohol production (31.2%) and Machines and equipment (23.7%).

The major negative results were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-7.0%) and Paraná (-3.5%), as a consequence, respectively, of wage losses in Footwear and leather articles (-18.5%) and Chemical products (-30.9%); Food products and beverages (-11.0%) and Wood (-18.5%).

In the analysis by sectors, still in the comparison with September 2005, the real payroll value increased in 7 among 18 investigated groups.  The major positive results were observed in Chemical products (15.2%), Electrical, electronic and communication equipment (19.7%) and Mining and quarrying (8.7%).  On the other hand, the major wage reductions came from Machines and equipment (-9.9%), Footwear and leather articles (-9.5%) and Rubber and plastic (-4.5%).

In the analysis by quarters, the value of the payroll, in relation to the same period of the previous year, showed increase from the second (0.6%) to the third quarter of 2006 (1.3%).  This trend of expansion was observed in 9 among 18 sectors, especially Mining and quarrying, which changed the decrease of 7.2% to an increase of 8.3%, Basic metallurgy (from -2.1% to 1.5%) and Transportation (from 1.1% to 2.3%).  Among the seven localities which increased the value of the payroll, Rio de Janeiro stood out, changing from -4.0% to 3.7%, due, mainly, to Mining and quarrying (from -34.4% to 13.9%).

In the index accumulated in the year, the value of the real payroll increased by 0.8%, with positive results in 11 among 14 localities.  The most relevant positive contributions were observed in Minas Gerais (7.9%), North and Central West Regions (7.1%) and São Paulo (0.5%) and, on the other hand, the most significant negative contributions were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-8.1%) and Paraná (-4.9%).  In the analysis by sectors, Chemical products (14.0%), Electrical, electronic and communication equipment (13.1%) and Food products and beverages (3.8%) stood out with the major positive influences.   Machines and equipment (-12.8%), Footwear and leather articles (-12.2%) and Wood (-10.5%) brought the main negative results.
