Industrial employment changes by -0.1% in August

The rate was negative in relation to July, in the seasonally adjusted series. In comparison with August 2005, employment increased by 0.2% but, in terms of the rates accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, it decreased by 0.4% in both comparisons. The number of hours paid increased by 0.3%, with seasonal adjustment, but was stable in comparison with August 2005 (0.1%) and was negative considering the figures accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months (-0.1% and -0.2%, respectively). The real payroll increased in all the comparisons: 1.1% (August 06/July 06, seasonally adjusted), 0.8% (August 06/August 05), 0.7% (accumulated in the year) and 1.2% (accumulated in the last 12 months).

 

In August, industrial employment changed by -0.1% in comparison to the immediately previous month, in the series without seasonal influence. With this result, the quarterly moving average indicator was stable (0.0%) in the quarters ended in August and July.

In relation to August 2005, there was positive change of 0.2% in the number of persons employed in industry. There were negative results accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months (both -0.4%).

In the comparison August 06/August 05, the number of workers in industry increased in 11 of the 18 subsectors and in 8 of the 14 areas surveyed. By subsector, the major gains, considering the national average, were those of Food products and beverages (6.6%), Petroleum refining and alcohol production (16.4%) and Machines, Electronic and Communication Appliances (3.5%). The first of these subsectors accounted for the main impact on employment in the North and Central West Regions (9.4%) and in São Paulo. These areas accounted for the main contributions to the increase of the overall rate in the country.

On the other hand, the areas responsible for the main negative contributions were: Rio Grande do Sul (-7.7%) and Paraná (-1.7%). Among the subsectors, the most negatively influential ones were Footwear and leather articles (-12.3%), Apparel (-7.7%) and Machinery and equipment (-4.3%).

Considering the rate accumulated in the year (0.4%), eight areas and 11 subsectors faced reduction of the number of industrial workers, and the main negative contribution in this case came from Rio Grande do Sul (-2.0%) and Paraná (-2.8%). Among the industrial subsectors, the major negative results were those of Footwear and leather articles (-13.0%), Machinery and equipment (-7.4%) and Wood (-9.6%).

Still in this comparison, there was positive influence of Food products and beverages (8.3%), Machines, electronic and communication appliances (5.3%) and Petroleum refining and alcohol production (12.7%). The highlights were the North and Central West regions (9.6%), besides São Paulo (0.8%) and Minas Gerais (1.3%).

Number of hours paid

The number of hours paid in industry increased by 0.3% in the month/previous month comparison (seasonally adjusted figure). Even with this result, the quarterly moving average indicator decreased by 0.2% in the quarters ended in August and July.

When compared to the same month in the previous year, the number of hours paid remained practically stable (0.1%), whereas the indicator accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months had negative changes of -0.1% and -0.2%, respectively.

In terms of the monthly indicator (0.1%), eight of the 14 areas and 10 of the 18 subsectors surveyed contributed positively to the overall rate. By subsector, Food products an beverages (4.4%), Machines, electronic and commmunication appliances (6.9%) and Petroleum refining and alcohol production (15.6%) were the main positive contributions. On the other hand, the most relevant negative impacts came from Apparel (-7.5%) and Footwear and leather articles (-7.3%).

Still with reference to the comparison August 06/August 05, the areas of most positive contributions were: North and Central West Regions (8.7%), São Paulo (1.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.1%). On the other hand, the most significant negative influences came from Rio Grande do Sul (-7.2%) and Paraná (-3.9%).

Considering the rates accumulated in the year (-0.1%), there was retrogression in eight areas and ten subsectors, with the main negative contributions coming from Rio Grande do Sul (-0.8%), Paraná (-4.8%) and Santa Catarina (-3.3%). The most relevant positive contributions, on the contrary, came from the North and Central West Regions (9.3%) and from São Paulo (2.0%). By subsector, Wood (-11.9%) and Machinery and equipment (-6.0%) were the main negative contributions, whereas Food products and beverages (6.0%) and Machines, Electronic and Communication Appliances (9.1%) were the main positive ones.

Real payroll

In August 2006, the real payroll of industry increased by 1.1% (seasonally adjusted series), thus reversing the falling trend observed in July 06 (-0.4%). The comparisons with equivalent periods last year were also positive: 0.8% in relation to August 05, 0.7% accumulated in the year and 1.2% accumulated in the last 12 months. The quarterly moving average indicator had little increase in August (0.3%), after an almost stable figure in July (0.1%).

In the analyis of the monthly index (0.8%), the real payroll increased in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed. The biggest positive impact came from Minas Gerais (10.5%), due, mainly, to the hike of Metallurgy (15.6%), Machines, electronic and commmunication appliances (54.9%) and Machinery and equipment (22.6%). It is also worth mentioning the contribution of the North and Central West Regions (4.4%), especially because of the positve results of Food products and beverages (5.7%), Chemical products (35.1%) and  Machines, electronic and commmunication appliances (10.6%); and of Rio de Janeiro (4.3%), due to the salary gains observed in the subsectors Food products and beverages (21.1%), Mining and quarrying industry (14.2%) and Means of transportation (18.1%). On the contrary, the most relevant negative contributions came from Rio Grande do Sul (-9.3%) and Paraná (-5.8%), due, respectively, to the salary reduction in the subsectors Footwear and leather articles (-20.0%) and Food prodcucts and beverages (-9.0%); and Food prodcuts and beverages (-13.8%) and Wood (-16.1%).

Still in the same comparison, the real payroll increased in 8 of the 18 activities surveyed, and the major positive influences came from chemical products (12.9%), Machines, electronic and commmunication appliances (15.1%) and Means of transportation (3.0%). On the other hand, the major salary gains came from Machinery and equipment (-15.4%) and Footwear and leather articles (-10.3%).

In terms of the indicator accumulated in the period January-August 06/January-August 05, real payroll increased by 0.7%, with positive rates in 11 of the 14 areas surveyed. The most significant positive imapcts were observed in Minas Gerais (8.0%), due to Means of transportation (14.0%) and Metallurgy (6.9%); the North and Central West Regions (7.5%), affected by the result of Food products and beverages (10.5%) and Machines, electronic and commmunication appliances (22.3%); and of São Paulo (0.5%), due to Chemical products (30.7%) and Machines, electronic and commmunication appliances (13.1%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-8.4%) and Paraná (-5.2%) were the main negative contributors, due to the subsectors of Footwear and leather articles (-22.5%) and Chemical products (-12.8%); and Food products and beverages (-10.2%) and Wood (-17.2%), respectively.

By subsector, in the country, salaries increased in 7 of the 18 activites surveyed. The main posiitve contributions came from Chemical products (13.6%) and Machines, electronic and commmunication appliances (12.5%), whereas Machinery and equipment (-12.3%) and Footwear and leather articles (-12.7%) were the most significant negative impacts.
