Industrial employment up 0.3% from June to July

In July, the industrial employment had positive change of 0.3% in relation to June (seasonally adjusted series). The rate was the same (0.3%) in comparison with July 2005, being this one the first positive result after nine negative rates. The indicators accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months decreased by 0.4%. The slight increase from June to July led to the stability of the quarterly moving average, which changed by 0.1% between the quarters ended in July and in June.

Compared to results of July 2005, industrial employment increased in 6 of the 14 areas surveyed 

The positive result in relation to July 2005(0.3%) reflected the increase of employment in six of the fourteen areas surveyed, being the North and Central West regions (9.2%) and São Paulo (1.4%) the main highlights. The subsector of food products and beverages was extremely relevant to the formation of results in these areas, with rates of 23.7% and 10.5%, respectively. Among the areas where the number of workers was reduced, the main negative contributions came from Rio Grande do Sul (-8.6%) and Paraná (-1.1%).  Footwear and leather articles (-20.0%), in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and wood (-9.2%), in Paraná, stood out as the most relevant negative contributions.

 

At national level, in comparison with July 2005, the number of employed persons increased in seven of the eighteen subsectors. The main positive highlights were food products and beverages (6.6%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (15.2%). It is worth pointing out that the increase of the level of employment in the subsector of petroleum refining and alcohol production is directly related to the harvest of sugar cane. On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-11.5%) and machinery and equipment (-4.9%) were the most significant negative contributions.

  

Considering the accumulated indicators (Jan-Jul), the level of employment in industry was 0.4% lower than that of the period Jan-Jul 2005. This result can be explained, above all, by the retrogression observed in eight of the fourteen subsectors. In terms of participation in the overall result for the country, the most significant negative rates were those of food products and beverages (8.5%) and machines, electronic appliances and communication equipment (5.6%), among the areas, in the North and Central West Regions (9.6%) and in São Paulo (0.9%).

 

Throughout 2006, the quarterly moving average index had slight positive change over the previous month, having accumulated between February and March increase of 0.6%. This movement has a relationship with the slight growing trend of production which, according to the same type of indicator, increased by 0.8% between last March and July.    


Number of hours paid decreased by 1.2% in relation to June

 

In July, the number of hour paid to industrial workers decreased by 1.2% in relation to June, in the series without seasonal adjustment. With this result, the quarterly moving average index decreased by 0.3% in the quarters ended in July and June. In comparison with the same month in the previous year, the number of hours paid was practically stable (0.1%). Concerning the other indicators, there were the following negative rates: -0.15 accumulated in the year and -0.2% accumulated in the least twelve months.

 

The positive change (0.1%) in the number of hour paid, considering the monthly indicator, resulted from the growth of the employment sector in eight of the fourteen areas and in ten of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. By subsector, the major positive impacts came from food products and beverages (4.4%); machines, electronic material and communication equipment (8.0%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (14.5%). On the other hand, apparel (-6.2%) and footwear and leather articles (-7.2%) were the major negative contributions.

 

Still in comparison to July 2005, the areas with most positive contributions were the North and Central West Regions (8.5%) and São Paulo (1.7%). In the North and Central west Regions, the number of hour paid increased in thirteen of the eighteen activities surveyed; the main contributions came from food products and beverages (18.4%), wood (5.8%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (15.9%). In the industry of São Paulo, the most positive contributions were those of food products and beverages (4.1%), machines and of electronic material and communication equipment (8.2%). On the contrary, the number of hours paid decreased in Rio Grande do Sul (-8.4%) and Paraná (-3.2%), where the highlights were footwear and leather articles (-12.9%) and wood (-16.7%), respectively.

The areas responsible for the main decreases were in Rio Grande do Sul (-8.1%), Paraná (-5.0%) and Northeast region (-2.6%). On the other hand, São Paulo (2.2%) and the North and Central West regions (9.4%) were the main positive impacts. In terms for the total result for the country, the most relevant negative impacts came from wood (-12.8%) and footwear and leather articles (-7.9%). Food products and beverages (6.2%) and machines and of electronic material and communication equipment (9.4%) were the main positive impacts.

In relation to June, payroll fell by 0.2%

 

In July, the payroll of industrial workers, not considering the seasonal effects, fell by 0.2% in comparison with the previous month. Compared to the same period last month, the results were: 1.9% in relation to July 2005; 0.9% accumulated in the year and 1.7% accumulated in the last twelve months. The quarterly moving average indicator remains practically sable, having changed by 0.2% in July.

 

In comparison with July 2005, the real payroll increased by 1.9%, with positive rates in eleven of the fourteen areas surveyed. The main contribution came from São Paulo (2.0%), due, mainly, to the changes in chemical products (25.8%0, food products and beverages (5.5%) and machines, electronic material and communication equipment (6.7%). It is also worth mentioning the change in the payroll in Minas Gerais (8.4%), due to food products and beverages 98.3%), machines, electronic material and communication equipment (20.6%) and chemical products (37.5%). On the other hand, there were negative contributions in Rio Grande do Sul (-9.8%) and Paraná (-2.9%), due, mainly, to the reduction of salaries in the subsectors of footwear and leather articles (-26.1%) and rubber and plastic (-17.4%); and food products and beverages (-9.8%) and wood (-15.4%).

Still in the same comparison, the real payroll increased in nine of the eighteen subsectors surveyed, in the country. The main positive impacts came from chemical products (12.6%), food products and beverages (4.4%) and machines, electronic material and communication equipment (9.2%). On the other hand, the main decreases came from machinery and equipment (-4.2%) and footwear and leather articles (-13.5%).

In terms of the indicator accumulated in the year, the real payroll increased by 0.9%, with increase in eleven of the fourteen subsectors surveyed. The main positive contributions came from Minas Gerais(7.6%), due, mainly, to means of transportation (14.7%) and metallurgy (6.1%); São Paulo (1.0%), due to chemical products and machines, electronic material and communication equipment (12.6%); and to the North and Central West Regions (7.9%), due to food products and beverages (11.0%) and machines, electronic material and communication equipment (23.0%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-8.82%) and Paraná 9-5.1%), because of footwear and leather articles (-22.8%) and food products and beverages (-9.6%), were the areas with major salary reduction.

 

Concerning the total result for the country, there was increase of payroll in eight of the eighteen subsectors. The most significant positive contributions came from chemical products (13.6%) and machines and of electronic material and communication equipment (11.7%), whereas machinery and equipment (-9.7%) and footwear and leather articles (-13.0%) were the main negative contributions.
