Employment in industry continued stable in October

In October, the industrial employment continued stable compared to September (-0.1%), in the series without seasonal influences. In relation to October 2004, it had a negative change of 0.2%. The indicators referent to the accumulated of the year and the accumulated of the last twelve months grew respectively 1.5% and 1.9%. The quarterly moving average remained stable, once the increment was 0.1% among the quarters closed in September and October. These are some highlights of the Monthly Survey of Industrial Employment and Wages of IBGE.


The monthly indicator had the second consecutive negative result (-0.2%). Among the ten localities that reduced the number of workers, the main influences came from Rio Grande do Sul (-8.8%) and Paraná (-2.6%). In Rio Grande do Sul, the dismissals overcame the admissions in thirteen among eighteen groups, standing out footwear and leather articles (-20.9%). In Paraná, the sector of wood (-20.4%) stood out among the nine falling segments. In the total of the country, these activities also brought the main negative impacts: reduction of 14.1% in footwear and leather articles and 14.4% in the wood sector. Still in the same comparison, the main positive contributions, in national level, were observed in food products and beverages (6.6%) and transportation (5.5%). In the analysis by regions, the positive influences came from São Paulo (2.2%), Minas Gerais (2.3%) and North and Central West Region (2.7%).

In the accumulated period January-October (1.5%), the admissions overcame the dismissals in ten areas and eleven activities. São Paulo (2.8%) and Minas Gerais (3.9%) figured as the most important influences in the overall result, among the localities. Among the sectors, the highlights were food products and beverages (7.3%) and transportation (9.9%). Rio Grande do Sul (-5.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.1%) were the localities that most influenced negatively the overall index. In the analysis by sectors, footwear and leather articles (-11.4%) and wood (-7.6%) brought the most significant negative contribution.

The annualized rate, indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, continued in a deceleration trend in September (2.3%) and October (1.9%).

 

Number of paid hours fell in October

After two months of growth, the indicator of number of hours paid fell by 0.6% in October, in the series without seasonal influences. Hence, the quarterly moving average trend presented stability, with null change (0.0%) among the quarters closed in September and October.


In the comparison October 05/ October 04, there was reduction of 0.3% in the number of hours paid to the workers in the industry. In the indicators for longer periods, the increases were of 1.1%, in the accumulated indicator of the year, and 1.6% in the accumulated of the last twelve months. The average number of daily hours of work had negative rates: -0.1% in the monthly index, -0.4% in the accumulated of the year and –0.3% in the accumulated of the last twelve months.

In relation to October 2004, the number of hours paid fell (-0.3%), influenced by retractions observed in ten among fourteen localities and eleven among eighteen activities surveyed. In the analysis by sectors, the major negative influences in the overall result came from footwear and leather articles (-13.5%), wood (-14.9%) and apparel (-3.3%). The main positive impacts came from food products and beverages (6.6%) and transportation (4.5%).

Still in the monthly comparison, Rio Grande do Sul (-8.8%), Northeast Region and Paraná (both with rate of –2.6%) were the localities which most influenced negatively the overall result. In the industry of the state, fourteen among eighteen surveyed sectors reduced the hours paid, especially the sectors of footwear and leather articles (-20.4%) followed by machines and equipment (-11.3%). In the Northeast Region, eleven activities had negative performance, standing out food products and beverages (-2.9%), footwear and leather articles (-6.6%) and apparel (-5.2%). The segments of wood (-22.7%) and other products of the industry of manufacturing (-17.6%) brought the main negative influences in Paraná. On the other hand, São Paulo (2.2%) and Minas Gerais (3.6%) brought the main positive influences, with food products and beverages and metal products being the main highlights. The results of these segments were, respectively, 16.6% and 9.0% in the industry of São Paulo, and 7.5% and 14.7% in the industry of Minas.

The accumulated indicator in the year registered growth of 1.1%, with ten areas and eight sectors portraying increase in the number of hours paid. The localities that showed the major increments in the total of the Country were São Paulo (2.3%), Minas Gerais (4.7%) and North and Central West Region (3.4%). On the other hand, the most significant negative influences came from Rio Grande do Sul (-6.9%) and Rio de Janeiro
(-1.9%). In the analysis by sectors, stood out the activities of food products and beverages (7.4%), transportation (9.5%) and metal products (6.3%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-11.9%) and wood (-8.3%) brought the main negative contributions.

The accumulated indicator in the last twelve months (1.6%) decelerated compared to the result of September (1.9%), maintaining the downward trend observed since June (2.7%).


Payroll fell by 1.6% in October

In October, the value of real payroll fell by 1.6% compared to September, already seasonally adjusted. With this result, the quarterly moving average indicator had a mild fall (-0.3%) among the quarters closed in September and October. In the other comparisons, the results continued positive: 2.5% in relation to October 2004, 3.8% in the accumulated indicator of the year and 4.9% in the accumulated indicator of the last twelve months.


In the comparison October 05/ October 04, the real payroll increased by 2.5%, with positive rates in eleven among fourteen surveyed localities. The major contribution for the formation of the overall rate came from São Paulo (1.7%), due, mainly, to food products and beverages (17.8%), metal products (11.3%) and machines and equipment (4.6%). Minas Gerais, with the highest rate among the areas (8.5%), brought the second major positive influence, due, mainly, to the groups of metal products (18.2%), transportation (13.0%) and mining and quarrying (13.7%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-4.0%) brought the main negative influence, mainly due to the sector of footwear and leather articles (-22.8%).

Considering sectors, still in this type of comparison, there was real gain in the payroll of twelve among eighteen industrial sectors investigated. The major positive contributions came from food products and beverages (11.7%), chemical products (5.9%) and machines and equipment (4.4%). On the other hand, the main negative influences were observed in transportation (-4.5%) and footwear and leather articles (-14.1%).

The accumulated indicator in the year recorded an expansion of 3.8%, with increment in twelve among fourteen surveyed sectors. The most significant positive influences came from São Paulo (3.5%) and Minas Gerais (9.9%). In the industry of São Paulo, the major contributions came from food products and beverages (17.0%), transportation (8.0%) and machines and equipment (7.9%), while in the industry of Minas the major contributions came from metal products (54.4%), basic metal products (7.8%) and transportation (12.8%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-0.9%) and Pernambuco (-0.5%) were the only areas with decrease in the payroll due, respectively, to footwear and leather articles (-15.9%) and food products and beverages (-5.5%). Still in the accumulated indicator of the year, in the Country, there was increase in the overall wages in thirteen activities. The most relevant positive contributions came from food products and beverages (10.2%), transportation (8.3%) and machines and equipment (7.7%), while paper and printing (-5.9%), footwear and leather articles (-8.7%) and non-metallic minerals (-5.5%) brought the major reductions in the payroll.
