Employment in industry increased by 0.6% in September

In September, the industrial employment increased by 0.6% in relation to August, after falling 0.2% in the previous month, in the series without seasonal influences. In comparison with September 2004, there was not change (0.0%). In the indicators for larger periods, the results continued positive, although indicating a downward trend: 1.7% in the accumulated index of the year, against 1.9% registered in August; and 2.3% in the accumulated index of the last 12 months, against 2.6% in the previous month. The number of employed persons increased by 0.4% in the third quarter, in relation to the same period of 2004, but was 0.3% lower than in the immediately previous quarter (seasonally adjusted series).

With the increase in the index month/previous month, the trend observed by the quarterly moving average indicator is once again positive: according to the graphic below, there is gain of 0.2% between the quarters ended in August and September.

In the monthly index (0.0%), nine among 14 areas and nine among 18 segments had negative rates. Rio Grande do Sul (-9.9%) and the Northeast region (-2.3%) contributed with the most important results to the overall result. On the other hand, the main positive influences came from São Paulo (2.7%) and Minas Gerais (3.5%). At national level, the groups that had the main negative impacts were footwear and leather articles (-15.7%) and wood (-15.0%). On the other hand, stood out the hirings observed in food products and beverages (7.3%) and transportation (6.1%).

In the accumulated indicator of the year (1.7%), São Paulo (2.9%) and Minas Gerais (4.1%) brought the main positive results among 10 localities in which increase in employment was observed. The negative highlights remained with Rio Grande do Sul (-5.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.1%). In the analysis by sectors, in the total of the Country, food products and beverages (7.4%) and transportation (10.4%) were the groups with the most relevant participation among the 11 groups which increased, in opposition to the negative influences which came from footwear and leather articles (-11.1%) and wood (-6.9%).

On a quarterly basis, the industrial employment has maintained positive results for six consecutive months, with falling rates in 2005: 2.6% in the first quarter of 2005, 2.0% in the second and a more pronounced deceleration in the third (0.4%). The loss in dynamism observed from the second to the third quarter reached 13 among 14 localities and 14 among 18 surveyed activities, especially in footwear and leather articles (from –10.9% to –15.3%), transportation (from 10.7% to 7.2%) and textiles (from 2.1% to –1.4%).

Also clear is the reduction in the employment indicators and in the number of paid hours in the comparison with the immediately previous month (seasonally adjusted series), followed by loss in the observed dynamism of the industrial production.


Number of hours paid increased by 0.2% from August to September

In September, the number of hours paid to the workers in the industry recorded a positive change of 0.2% in relation to August (seasonally adjusted figures). Even with the increase in the index month/ previous month for the second consecutive month, the moving average quarterly index continued negative: -0.2% between the quarters ended in August and September.

The comparison with the same month of the previous year showed reduction of 0.9%, whereas the indicators for longer periods increased by 1.2% in the accumulated index in the year and by 1.9% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months. In the third quarter there was stability in relation to the same period of 2004 (0.1%).

In relation to September 2004, the decrease of 0.9% showed basically, the negative behavior of 10 among 14 localities and 11 among 18 surveyed activities. In the analysis by sectors, the main falls came from the industries of footwear and leather articles (-16.5%), wood (-15.4%) and rubber and plastic (-6.0%). On the other hand, food products and beverages (6.4%) and transportation (6.0%) brought the most important positive results upon the overall result.

Still in the monthly comparison, the localities that brought the main negative results upon the overall result were Rio Grande do Sul (-10.9%), Northeast region (-4.1%) and Paraná (-1.7%). On the other hand, São Paulo (1.6%) and Minas Gerais (4.3%) brought the main positive contributions.

The deceleration of increase in the number of hours paid observed during 2005 was more pronounced from the second (1.6%) to the third quarter (0.1%). This trend can be observed in the major part (14) of the 18 surveyed sectors. It can be pointed out the results of footwear and leather articles, which changed from –10.5% to –15.3%; wood (from –8.4% to –13.7%) and textiles (from 2.9% to –1.3%).

In the accumulated indicator of the year, the number of hours paid increased by 1.2%, with 10 areas and eight sectors registering positive rates. By locality, the major impacts came from São Paulo (2.3%), Minas Gerais (4.8%) and North and Central West regions (3.6%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-6.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.0%) were the ones that most influenced negatively. In the analysis by sectors, the main increases in the total of the Country came from food products and beverages (7.5%), transportation (10.0%) and metal products (6.3%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-11.7%) and wood (-7.5%) represented the main negative contributions.

Payroll fell by 1.3% in relation to August

In September, the real value of payroll, in the seasonally adjusted series, fell by 1.3% in relation to the previous month, changing the result observed between July and August (1.9%). Even with the fall in this month, the quarterly moving average indicator remained stable in the quarters ended in August and September (0.1%).

In the other indicators, the results continued positive: 3.7% in relation to September 2004; 3.9% in the third quarter in comparison with the same period of the previous year; and 4.0% in the accumulated index of the year. The accumulated indicator of the last twelve months (5.5%) showed a slight deceleration in relation to August (6.0%).

In the comparison September 05/ September 04, the real payroll increased by 3.7%, with positive rates in 10 among 14 surveyed localities. The main contribution to the formation of this rate came from São Paulo (4.1%), followed by Minas Gerais (9.7%). In the analysis by sectors, there was increase in the payroll in 12 among 18 surveyed groups. In the total of the Country, the major positive influences came from food products and beverages (11.2%), machines and equipment (8.0%) and transportation (5.9%). On the other hand, the main negative results came from footwear and leather articles (-14.9%) and paper and printing (-5.1%).

The real value of payroll decreased from the second (4.2%) to the third quarter (3.9%) of the current year, both comparisons relatively to the same quarters of 2004. This trend was observed in only five among 14 surveyed localities, mainly due to Rio de Janeiro, which changed from 14.6% to 0.3%.

In the third quarter of 2005, in relation to the same period of the previous year, 13 areas expanded the value of payroll. The major rates were observed in Minas Gerais (9.2%), Espírito Santo (8.8%), North and Central West regions (4.9%) and São Paulo (4.5%). In the analysis by sectors, 12 among 18 segments had positive results, being the most important, in terms of participation, the ones of food products and beverages (12.2%), transportation (7.2%) and machines and equipment (7.3%).

In the accumulated indicator of the year (4.0%), there was an increase in 12 among 14 surveyed localities. Similarly to the monthly indicator, the major positive contributions came from São Paulo (3.7%) and Minas Gerais (10.0%). In the analysis by sectors, there was increase in the overall wages in 13 among 18 activities. The main positive contributions came from food products and beverages (10.0%), transportation (9.8%) and machines and equipment (8.1%), whereas paper and printing (-6.6%) and footwear and leather articles (-8.0%) accounted for the major negative contributions.
