The Master’s Program on Population Studies and Social Surveys of the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), which belongs to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), was created in 1998. Since then, it has been rated 4 in the Capes system of evaluation (which ranges from 1 to 5).

Two factors account for this specificity: the articulation of different subjects and the methodological emphasis on the development and conduction of social surveys; and the direct connection to IBGE, which guarantees academic knowledge integrated with the production and analysis of public statistics. The teaching staff is formed by professors, all having a doctor’s degree, from renowned universities in Brazil and abroad, with complementary and varied professional and academic histories.

Up to September 2005, about 80 master’s certificates had been conferred by this institution. The list of dissertations can be found on the web site: www.ence.ibge.gov.br.
