Industrial production maintains positive results in all regions

In September, the industrial production continued in expansion in all the investigated regions, according to the different comparisons. In relation to September of the previous year, the industries of Ceará (21.3%), Paraná (19.2%), São Paulo (14.6%), Santa Catarina (12.5%), Pará (12.3%) and Goiás (12.1%) recorded growing rates higher than the total of Brazil (7.6%), while in the other regions the results were the following: Minas Gerais (6.2%), Amazonas (5.9%), Northeast Region (5.9%), Bahia (3.5%), Rio de Janeiro (2.9%), Pernambuco (2.1%), Espírito Santo (1.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%).

In the quarterly comparison, all the areas recorded, as well, growth in the third quarter, when compared to the same period of 2003. Nine of the 14 surveyed areas kept an ascending trend in relation to the result of the previous quarter. This acceleration was more pronounced in Ceará where, between the second and third quarters, the rate passed from 6.5% to 20.5%, and in Paraná (from 3.4% to 13.1%).

Considering the indicator accumulated in the year, the positive results also included all the areas. The industries of São Paulo and Amazonas continued to lead the regional growth, both with 13.5%. In São Paulo, the main highlight was the segment of automotive vehicles, while the industry of electronic and communication equipment boasted the expansion in Amazonas. The states of Santa Catarina (11.5%), Ceará (9.9%), Pará (9.7%) and Paraná (9.2%) complete the group of areas that grew with rates above the average of the industry (9.0%). The other areas had the following results: Bahia (8.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (7.5%), Northeast Region (6.3%), Pernambuco and Minas Gerais (both with 6.2%), Goiás (5.3%), Rio de Janeiro (2.3%) and Espírito Santo (3.7%).

The accumulated indicator in the last twelve months continued in its trend of improvement, regarding the rhythm of production, in the following areas: Ceará, which passed from 3.9% to 5.9%; São Paulo (from 9.6% to 10.6%); Paraná (from 7.4% to 8.4%); Santa Catarina (from 5.9% to 6.9%); Goiás (from 4.3% to 4.8%); Minas Gerais (from 4.9% to 5.3%); Rio de Janeiro (from 1.4% to 1.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (from 5,7% to 5.8%). The rhythm remained stable in the Northeast Region (3.1%) and reduction happened in Pernambuco (from 5.9% to 5.1%) and in Amazonas (from 12.4% to 11.7%).

Amazonas

In September, the industry of Amazonas presented growth of 5.9% in the monthly indicator; 5.8% in the third quarter; 13.5% in the accumulated index of the year; and 11.7% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

In the comparison September 04/ September 03, seven of the 11 surveyed segments increased the production. The industries of electronic material and communication equipment (5.6%) and other transport equipment (17.4%) answered for the main positive contributions in the composition of the overall index. Negatively, chemical products (-15.7%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-9.6%) presented the most significant results.

In the quarterly comparison, we can observe that the industry of Amazonas interrupted the process of acceleration in the productive rhythm presented throughout this year passing from an expansion of 19.9% in the second quarter to an expansion of 5.8% in the third one, always in relation to the same periods of the previous year. Seven groups of industry contributed to this deceleration. We can stand out the recoils of the industries of electronic material and communication equipment, which passed from 32.2% to 12.7%, from the second to the third quarter, and food products and beverages (from 19.5% to –13.0%).

In the accumulated index of the year, all the groups of industry that were surveyed attained a positive performance. The most expressive were: electronic material and communication equipment (27.1%) and rubber and plastic (44.5%). On the other hand, only metal products (-7.1%) contributed negatively in the general result.

Pará

The industry of Pará presented, in September, a growth of 12.3% in the comparison with the same month of the previous year. This result is very similar to the one verified in August (12.4%). The indicators accumulated in the year (9.7%) and in the last 12 months (8.7%) also recorded expansion.

In the monthly indicator, the increase of 12.3% in the physical production in Pará was caused, mainly, by the performance of mining and quarrying (17.9%), a segment that answers for more than 40.0% of the industry of Pará. The other activities also presented a positive performance, specially basic metal products (5.3%) and cellulose and paper (22.6%).

Between the second and third quarters of the year, the industry of Pará accelerated its rhythm of production passing from an increase of 9.7% to 12.2%. The mining and quarrying industry, which passed from 9.1% to 18.9% in these periods, had a very important role in the overall result.

The expansion of 9.7% in the accumulated index of the year was a consequence of the growth in six surveyed activities. We can stand out among the main positive impacts, mining and quarrying industry (12.8%), basic metal products (5.7%) and cellulose and paper (24.9%).

Northeast

The Northeast region, in September, showed expansion in the main indicators: 5.9% in the monthly index; 6.3% in the accumulated index of the year; and 3.1% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

In the monthly indicator, with a growth for the eighth consecutive month, there was an increase in nine of the 11 manufacturing activities surveyed. The main positive contributions were observed in food products and beverages (7.4%), textiles (20.6%) and non-metallic minerals (20.7%). On the other hand, retraction was observed in chemical products (-2.3%) and basic metal products (-1.8%).

In the third quarter of the year, the industry of the Northeast grew 7.4%, presenting deceleration in the productive rhythm compared to the rate observed in the second quarter of the year (9.6%). This result reflected the drop in chemical products, which passed from 11.4% in the period April-June to 2.3% in the third quarter, and in petroleum refining and alcohol production (from 17.0% to 7.3%).

In the accumulated index January-September, the industry of the Northeast expanded itself in 10 industrial sectors. This result is supported by the good performances of food products and beverages (7.4%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (13.1%) and chemical products (4.9%). Negatively, basic metal products (-7.7%) was the only activity that recoiled.

Ceará

In September, the industry of Ceará recorded growth of 21.3%, in relation to the same month of the previous year. The other indicators, for larger periods, continued positive: 9.9% in the accumulated index of the year and 5.9% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

For the fifth consecutive month the industry of Ceará showed expansion in the monthly indicator, with increase in 8 of the 10 industrial sectors investigated. The main positive contribution for the composition of the rate of 21.3% came from textiles (25.6%). We can also mention the good performances of footwear and leather articles (24.4%) and of food products and beverages (9.2%). On the other hand, the two only negative impacts came from metal products (-20.5%) and basic metal products (-2.7%).

In the quarterly analysis, the industry of Ceará confirmed its positive and ascending trend that began in the first quarter of the year, showing in the period July -September a growth of 20.5%. This result was considerably higher than the one recorded in the previous quarter (6.5%) and is related, mainly, to the expansion of textiles, which passed from a growth of 4.5% to 19.9%, and to the recovery in apparel and accessories (from –6.9% to 34.3%).

In the accumulated indicator till September, the industry of Ceará presented positive rates in seven groups of industry. The more positive influences came from food products and beverages (13.5%), footwear and leather articles (19.1%) and textiles (5.5%). On the other hand, the main falls happened in metal products (-8.6%) and non-metallic minerals (-2.7%).

Pernambuco

The industrial production of Pernambuco grew, in September, 2.1% in relation to the same month of the previous year, a result that was lower than the one recorded in August (8.2%). In the indicators for larger periods the results were also positive: 6.2% in the accumulated index of the year and 5.1% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months. We can stand out that basic metal products remained with the major positive contribution in the three main indicators.

In relation to September of the previous year, growth was verified in six of the 11 industrial activities surveyed. The good performance in basic metal products (21.3%) was the main positive contribution. We can also mention the accomplishments of food products and beverages (3.5%) and non-metallic minerals (22.2%). Contrarily, the major negative pressures came from chemical products (-12.3%) and electrical machines, equipment and materials (-21.9%).

The industry of Pernambuco, in the third quarter of the year, reached an expansion of 4.4%, showing a slowdown in the rhythm of growth, considering that the increment in the second quarter was of 10.8%. This reduction is related to the industry of food products and beverages, which passed from 9.7% to 0.6%, and to electrical machines, equipment and materials (from 9.0% to –19.6%).

The growth of 6.2% in the accumulated indicator in the year reflected the expansion in eight investigated sectors. Basic metal products (24.4%) and food products and beverages (6.1%) were the activities with the highest positive impact. On the other hand, the main negative impacts were recorded by electrical machines, equipment and materials (-3.7%) and textiles (-6.1%).

Bahia

In September, the industry of Bahia recorded expansion of 3.5% when compared to the same month of the previous year, a result lower than the one obtained in August (7.2%). The other indicators, for larger periods, continued to show positive results: 8.3% in the accumulated index in the year and 4.0% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

For the eighth consecutive month, the monthly indicator of the industry of Bahia presented expansion (3.5%), with an increase in eight of the nine surveyed sectors. The major positive impacts came from food products and beverages (12.4%), cellulose and paper (21.7%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (4.7%). In opposition, chemical products (-4.9%) was the only activity to recoil.

The industry of Bahia, in the third quarter of the year, continued to record a positive result (5.5%). Although favorable, this performance was significantly lower than the one obtained in the second quarter (12.4%). This can be explained, mainly, by the retraction in chemical products, which passed from an expansion of 14.8% to a retraction of 0.3%, and in a lower degree by the reduction in the growth of petroleum refining and alcohol production (16.5% to 8.7%).

In the accumulated indicator in the year, all the sectors investigated presented positive rates. This result was supported by the good performance of the two sectors with highest share in the industry of Bahia: petroleum refining and alcohol production (13.1%) and chemical products (5.8%). We can stand out as well the good performances of basic metal products (12.6%) and automotive vehicles (49.1%).

Minas Gerais

In September 2004, the indicators that measure the industrial production of Minas Gerais recorded positive rates in all the comparisons. The monthly and accumulated indicators in the year recorded the same expansion rate (6.2%), while the accumulated index in the last twelve months reached 5.3%. In the quarterly index July-September, the increment was even higher (9.1%).

In the comparison with September of the previous year, 10 of the 13 groups of industry surveyed increased the production. The industry of mining and quarrying had expansion of 14.5%. In the industry of manufacturing, the rate was slightly lower (5.0%), as a consequence of the good performances of nine industrial segments, specially automotive vehicles (21.6%). Three other activities that stood out were: food products (8.7%), other chemical products (15.0%) and machines and equipment (18.5%). Among the three groups of industry that recorded fall we can stand out basic metal products (-7.2%) with the fourth consecutive recoil.

In the analysis by quarters, an increasing trend of production could be verified, since the beginning of the year. From January till March the general industry recorded an expansion of 2.7%; in the second quarter an expansion of 6.4%, and in the third quarter an expansion of 9.1%. We can mention that, although the last quarter presented the best of all the results, this growth occurred in a comparison with a quarter that had only grew 0.3%. The groups of industry with the major positive influence in this type of comparison were: automotive vehicles (31.6%), mining and quarrying industries (18.6%) and machines and equipment (31.4%). On the other hand, only two recoiled: basic metal products (-4.4%) and cellulose and paper (-0.6%).

The accumulated growth from January to September maintained itself in the same level of August (6.2%) and curiously with the majority of the activities presenting rates significantly near to the ones recorded in the previous month. The activities of major positive impact were automotive vehicles (21.4%) and mining and quarrying industries (12.9%). On the other hand, the poorest performances were observed in metal products (-8.1%), basic metal products (-1.1%) and tobacco (-4.9%).

Espírito Santo

The industry of Espírito Santo, in September 2004, continued to record positive rates in its main indicators. The monthly rate expanded 1.9%, while in the accumulated indexes the results were the following: from January to September, 3.7%; in the accumulated index of the last twelve months, 1.7%; and in the third quarter, 3.0%.

In the comparison with September of the previous year, the highlights were: food products and beverages (28.3%), basic metal products (4.4%) and the mining and quarrying industry (3.9%). The group Cellulose and paper, with fall of 16.6%, was the only negative result.

In the analysis by quarters, it could be observed that in the period July-September 2004 the production had a growth of 3.0% compared to the same period of the previous year. The rhythm of growth decreased vis-à-vis the second quarter (5.5%). The highlights were the following groups of industry: food products and beverages (23.2%) and the mining and quarrying industry (3.4%). With a negative behavior, cellulose and paper (-5.8%) had the major impact.

The accumulated production in the year of 3.7% was higher than the one recorded in the same period of the previous year, with four segments presenting positive results. The major influence came from food products and beverages (15.3%), followed by basic metal products (3.9%). On the other hand, cellulose and paper (-0.5%), which till August had recorded positive rates, inverted this trend in September.

Rio de Janeiro

The industrial production in Rio de Janeiro continued in expansion (2.9%) in September, in comparison with the same month of the previous year and was the fifth consecutive positive result in a row in this type of comparison. In the indicators for larger periods the industry of Rio de Janeiro recorded a growth in the accumulated index of the year (2.3%), as well as in the index of the last twelve months (1.5%).

In relation to September 2003, the global result of 2.9% was determined by the growth in the industrial activity in the majority (nine) of the 13 activities surveyed. In the manufacturing industry (3.7%), answering for the major positive contribution in the composition of the overall indicator, we can observe beverages (41.7%) and non-metallic minerals (40.6%). Also, we can stand out the favorable performance of automotive vehicles (17.7%) and food products (10.2%). Among the four groups of industry that reduced the production, the major negative pressure came from basic metal products (-8.3%) and edition and printing (-10.5%).

In the quarterly analysis, the industry of Rio de Janeiro shows a positive result with a slight acceleration from the second (2.6%) to the third quarter (3.3%), both comparisons in relation to the same period of the previous year. This result followed the national trend.

Regarding the accumulated index in the year, the industry of Rio de Janeiro recorded growth in 9 of the 13 activities researched. The adverse performance in the mining and quarrying industry, which presented recoil in the production (5.0%), was the main negative influence in the general result of the industry. The manufacturing industry showed an expansion in the production (3.9%). Automotive vehicles (25.2%) and non-metallic minerals (21.1%) were the main positive highlights. Contrarily, other chemical products (-6.1%) was the group of the manufacturing industry that most pressured negatively the global index.

São Paulo

In September, the industrial production of São Paulo continued to present expansion according to the main indicators: 14.6% in relation to the same month of the previous year, 13.5% in the accumulated rate of the year and 10.6% in the last twelve months. In all these comparisons the results in the industry of São Paulo were above the ones recorded in the total of the country: 7.6%, 9.0% and 7.2%, respectively. The third quarter of the year presented growth of 17.4%.

In the monthly indicator (September 04/ September 03) an increase in the production of 18 of the 20 surveyed sectors was observed. In the composition of the global rate of 14.6%, the main positive impacts came from the industries of electronic material and communication equipment (144.6%) and automotive vehicles (25.9%). On the other hand, answering for the two only negative influences were the sectors of petroleum refining and production of alcohol (-4.7%) and edition and printing (-0.8%).

The industry of São Paulo, recording expansion of 17.4% in the third quarter of this year, showed acceleration in the productive rhythm: in the first quarter the growth was 8.6% and in the second 14.2%. This improvement was generalized and supports itself in the behavior of 13 sectors, specially electronic material and communication equipment, which passed from 42.2% in the second quarter to 151.5% in the third; machines and equipment (from 24.8% to 32.7%); food products (from 2.2% to 5.2%) and metal products (from 14.3% to 24.7%).

The expansion of 13.5% in the accumulated indicator in January-September, against the same period of the previous year, reflects a generalized scenario of growth: all the activities presented positive rates. The main highlights in the formation of the overall result continued to be verified in the industries that produce consumer durable goods and capital goods: automotive vehicles (31.4%), electronic material and communication equipment (61.9%) and machines and equipment (22.8%).

Paraná

The indicators of industrial production in Paraná continued to show in September positive results: 19.2% in relation to September 2003, 9.2% in the accumulated index of the year and 8.4% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months. Hence, from the second to the third quarter of this year there was a significant acceleration in the productive rhythm, since the index passed from 3.4% to 13.1%.

In the comparison with September of the previous year, the expansion of 19.2% was a consequence of the favorable performance of 9 of the 14 groups of industry investigated. This index was influenced, in a large degree, by the increases observed in automotive vehicles (67.7%) and edition and printing (78.0%). We can also mention the positive contributions, although in a lower scale, of the segments machines and equipment (24.5%) and petroleum refining and production of alcohol (15.6%).

In the quarterly comparisons, an important dynamic gain could be observed between the second (3.4%) and third quarter (13.1%). Six of the fourteen groups of industry analyzed contributed to this trend, specially petroleum refining and production of alcohol that passed from –44.6% in the period April-June to –3.4% in July-September, edition and printing (from –14.9% to 48.6%) and automotive vehicles (from 45.9% to 68.6%).

The accumulated production expanded 9.2% in the year with a favorable performance of the majority (10) of the investigated industrial activities. The main highlight continued to be automotive vehicles (45.9%). We can also mention the positive contributions of machines and equipment (24.9%), edition and printing (26.5%), wood (23.0%) and food products (5.9%).

Santa Catarina

In September, the main indicators of the industry of Santa Catarina were positive. In relation to September 2003, the production recorded an increase of 12.5%. This is the eighth consecutive positive result in this type of comparison. As a consequence the indicators for larger periods presented expansion in the accumulated index of the year (11.5%) as well as in the last twelve months (6.9%).

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, 10 of the 11 investigated industrial activities contributed positively for the composition of the rate of 12.5%, specially automotive vehicles (81.1%). We can also mention the increments in rubber and plastic (30.5%), textiles (17.0%) and food products (7.2%). Contrarily, only non-metallic minerals (-6.8%) recorded a negative result.

The evolution of the manufacturing activity of the state in the third quarter of 2004, when it recorded a growth of 17.1%, showed a result significantly above the first quarter (3.1%) and second quarter (13.9%), in the comparison with the same periods of the previous year. This trend, that included nine groups of industry, was considerably more important in automotive vehicles, where the production passed from a fall of 28.4% in the first quarter to a growth of 19.7% and 81.7% in the following quarters.

In the accumulated indicator of the year, the industry of the state, with a rate of expansion of 11.5%, presented a result above the one observed for the whole country (9.0%). The favorable performance reflected the positive indexes attained by 10 analyzed industrial activities, specially the industries of food products (10.9%) and machines and equipment (15.7%). In opposition, once more, the only activity that showed fall was non-metallic minerals (-6.3%).

Rio Grande do Sul

In September, the industry of Rio Grande do Sul, according to the monthly indicator, presented growth of 1.9%, a result considerably lower than the one recorded in August (13.5%). The indicators for larger periods recorded more expressive expansions: 7.5% in the accumulated index in the year and 5.8% in the accumulated index in the last twelve months.

In the comparison with the same month of previous year, the increase of 1.9% in the production was a consequence of a positive performance in 11 of the 14 groups of industry researched. The activities that recorded the highest increases were machines and equipment (12.9%), other chemical products (9.0%) and metal products (18.7%). In opposition, the major negative influences in the general result came from petroleum refining and production of alcohol (-44.0%) and cellulose and paper (-12.0%).

In the quarterly comparison, the indexes show the good performance of the manufacturing activity from the second (7.4%) to the third quarter (10.7%). In these two periods, 10 groups of industries increased the production. The highlights were: tobacco, that passed from –24.8% to 157.7% and footwear and leather articles, from –8.1% to 4.0%.

In the accumulated index of the year, the growth (7.5%) of the industry of the state was determined by the positive accomplishments of 11 groups of industry. The more expressive were: tobacco (30.3%), machines and equipment (20.4%) and automotive vehicles (20.0%). In opposition, footwear and leather articles (-3.0%) and petroleum refining and production of alcohol (-3.3%) were the major negative pressures.

Goiás

In September, the industry of Goiás, according to the monthly indicator, presented expansion of 12.1%, improving in relation to August (3.0%). The indicators for larger periods also presented growth: 6.2% in the accumulated index in the year and 4.8% in the accumulated index in the last twelve months.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, all the five groups of industry that were surveyed contributed positively for the increase of 12.1% in the industry of the state. The most expressive was food products and beverages (12.2%). Other relevant positive contributions came from chemical products (16.7%) and the mining and quarrying industry (14.4%).

From the second till the third quarter of this year, the industry of Goiás presented a good performance in the rhythm of production, passing from 5.2% to 8.6%. The highlight, in these two periods, came from the mining and quarrying industry that passed from –10.8% to 47.1%.

The expansion of 6.2% in the accumulated index January-September reflected the positive performance of 4 of 5 activities surveyed. Similarly to the monthly indicator, food products and beverages (6.6%) presented the major positive pressure, followed by chemical products (9.1%) and the mining and quarrying industry (5.2%).
