In the accrued indicator for the year, the results are positive in all surveyed locations, with a highlight for Amazonas and São Paulo. Compared to July 2003, Amazonas registered the only negative rate.

Positive results in the accrued indicator were registered in all surveyed locations during the first seven months. The leadership in regional performance, in terms of magnitude of growth, remains with the industry of Amazonas, where the expansion rate of 13.8% is mainly influenced by the production of electro-electronics and cellular phones, followed by São Paulo, with 11.2%, having as the manufacturing of automobiles and trucks as a main influence. In these highlights, the standard of growth observed in the Brazilian industry’s total is confirmed, with the favorable behavior of capital and durable consumer goods. Included with an increase greater than the 7.8% that were registered for the country’s total are: Santa Catarina (9.9%), Bahia (9.1%) and Pará (8.9%). The results for the other locations were: Rio Grande do Sul (7.6%), Ceará (6.9%), Pernambuco (6.5%), Northeast (6.0%), Goiás (5.7%), Paraná (4.7%), Espírito Santo (3.7%), Minas Gerais (3.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.2%).

An expansion was registered in thirteen out of fourteen surveyed areas compared to July of last year, with a highlight for industries in Ceará (22.3%), Santa Catarina (18.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (17.1%), São Paulo (17.0%), Pará (11.8%) and Goiás (11.2%). The following registered increases in production but remained below the Brazilian industry’s average (9.6%): Minas Gerais (8.2%), Northeast (7.5%), Bahia (5.4%) Pernambuco (2.7%) Espírito Santo (2.2%), Rio de Janeiro (0.8%) and Paraná (0.3%). Only Amazonas (-3.5%) registered a decrease in this form of comparison.

A retraction of industrial activity was observed in Amazonas for the month of July compared to July 2003 (-3.5%), which is the first negative rate of the year. Results remained positive for the other indicators: 13.8% in the accrued year and 10.2% in the last twelve months.

The retraction of 3.5% was a consequence of decreases observed in five out of eleven surveyed sectors, with a highlight for food and beverages (-20.8%) and oil refining and alcohol production (-29.3%), that exercised the main negative impacts. The performance of these activities may be explained by the lower production of items such as beverage powdered mixes and syrups and gasoline, as a consequence of an elevated base of comparison. The main positive influences were observed with electronic materials and communications equipment (5.7%) and the manufacturing of machines and equipment (179.6%), bearing in mind the advance in the manufacturing of color television sets and air conditioning devices.

The increase of 13.8% between January and July resulted form the positive performance of ten activities, especially electronic material and communications equipment (30.9%) and food and beverages (7.5%), where televisions and powdered mixes and syrups for beverages stood-out. On the other hand, metal products (-11.6%) was the only sector that registered a decrease in the period due to a retraction in the manufacturing of shavers and shaving blades.

In July, the industry of Pará, compared to the same month of the previous year, registered an increase of 11.8%. The indicators for broader periods also registered expansions: 8.9% in the accrued year and 8.6% in the last twelve months.

In comparison to July 2003, the increase of 11.8% was a result of the growth of six surveyed activities, with the most significant performance being observed in the extractive industry (16.8%), that registered an increase in the extraction of iron ores and manganese. It is followed by the food and beverages industry, which stood-out with an increase of 23.5%, mainly due to the increase in production of frozen crustaceans and soft drinks. It should be noted that, together, these two segments represent almost 80.0% of the global result registered this month.

The expansion of 8.9% in the accrued year also counted with the positive performance of the six surveyed segments. The extractive industry (10.6%) remained as the one with the greatest positive impact on the global index, mainly with the extraction of aluminum and iron ores. Other industries that are noteworthy include basic metallurgy (6.6%) and cellulose and paper (26.3%).

The Northeast region, in July, reached positive rates in the main industrial production indicators: 7.5% in the monthly comparison, 6.0% in the accrued year and 1.9% in the last twelve accrued months.

In July, the Northeastern industry, compared to the same month of the previous year (7.5%), registered an increase in ten out of eleven surveyed industrial activities. The greatest positive contributions were registered by textiles (23.7%), as a result of the production of cotton and artificial mesh fiber cloths; in chemical products (5.0%), due to the greater production of non-saturated ethylene and sodium hydroxide and, in food and beverages (5.4%), mainly due to soft drinks and refined soy. On the other hand, basic metallurgy (-7.4%), the only sector to register a retraction, reflected a decrease in the production of aluminum oxide and non-alloy aluminum in gross forms.

With regards to the year’s accrued indicator, the Northeast’s industry grew 6.0%, with ten out of eleven manufacturing sector registering positive rates. This result is mainly due to the good performance of oil refining and alcohol (14.6%), driven by the production of diesel oil and alcohol; of food and beverages (7.1%), where the increase of toasted peanuts and cashew chestnuts and soft drinks are relevant; and of chemical products (6.2%), driven by the production of non-saturated ethylene and high-density polyethylene. On the other hand, basic metallurgy (-10.1%) was, again, the only activity to register a retraction, due to the same product already mentioned in the monthly indicator.

In July, the industrial production of Ceará registered a growth rate of 22.3% compared to the same month of the previous year, a result that is much grater than the one of last month (12.8%). The other indicators, for broader periods, were also positive: 6.9% for the accrued year and 2.5% in the last twelve accrued months.

For the third consecutive month, the industry of Ceará registered an increase compared to the same month of the previous year. All ten surveyed industrial sectors contributed towards the rate of 22.3%, with a highlight for the textile sector (18.6%), that reflected the increase in the manufacturing of artificial fibers mesh and cotton. It should also be noted that the performance of footwear and leather items (27.8%) that is explained by the greater production of plastic footwear; of chemical products (68.8%), due to the production increase of calcium carbonate and vaccines for veterinary medicine and clothing and accessories (35.7%), due to professional clothing items and long women’s trousers.

In the accrued year, the industry of Ceará grew 6.9%, with seven out of ten industrial activities registering positive rates. In this comparison, the greatest impacts were caused by food and beverages (14.5%), as a result of toasted peanuts and cashew chestnuts and processed cashew chestnut products; and from footwear and leather items (17.1%) due to the plastic footwear. On the other hand, negative pressures were exerted by oil refining and alcohol production (-7.6%); non-metallic minerals (-8.6%); and clothing and accessories (-4.8%).

In July, Pernambuco’s industry grew 2.7% compared to the same month of the previous year, a result that is much inferior than the one registered in June (14.5%). The results for the indicators of broader periods remained positive: 6.5% in the accrued year and 5.1% in the last twelve accrued months.

The comparison with July 2003 registered an increase of 2.7% with growth in nine out of eleven surveyed activities. This result is mainly due to the good performance of basic metallurgy (20.2%) and also of chemical products (6.9%) and non-metallic minerals (15.8%), in this last case, as a result of the production of: glass bottles, jugs and jars for packaging and prepared concrete mortar. On the other hand, there was a retraction among food and beverages (-8.3%), reflecting a decrease in the production of beer/tapped beer and "cachaça" [Brazilian sugarcane brandy] and in electric machines, devices and materials (-11.6%).

In the accrued year, the industry of Pernambuco grew 6.5%, with positive rates in seven out of eleven surveyed manufacturing sectors and, as with the monthly indicator, basic metallurgy (22.6%) registered the main positive contribution. It should also be noted that the good performance of food and beverages (6.4%) and chemical products (6.9%), that registered respective gains in the production of margarine and construction paints and varnishes. On the other hand, the greatest losses were registered by textiles (-9.4%), mainly due to the lower production of cotton fabrics and glass bottles, jugs and jars for packaging.

In July, the industrial production of Bahia registered an increase of 5.4% compared to the same month of the previous year. The other indicators were also positive: 9.1% in the accrued year and 3.2% in the last twelve accrued months.

For the sixth consecutive month, the industry of Bahia registered growth in the monthly indicator. This result (5.4%), lower than the one registered in June (21.3%), is explained by the decreased intensity in the growth of two of the most important industrial sectors of Bahia: chemical products, that registered an expansion of 28.7% in June, and only 1.7% in July; and oil refining and alcohol production, that passed from 25.4% to 7.9%. The increase in eight out of nine surveyed industrial sectors contributed towards the composition of the 5.4% rate, with the result for oil refining and alcohol production (7.9%) being the most significant. The good performance registered by food and beverages (9.3%), as a result of the soy oil item, and chemical products (1.7%), should also be noted. On the other hand, cellulose and paper (-0.5%), was the only sector that registered a retraction, due to the decrease of cellulose production.

The Bahia’s industry increased 9.1% in the year’s accrued indicator, with growth in all surveyed industrial activities. The greatest positive impact was caused by oil and alcohol refining (14.2%), as a result of the increase of diesel oil and naphthas. Chemical products (8.2%) and basic metallurgy (13.8%) should also be noted.

In July, the main industrial indicators for Minas Gerais remained positive. The monthly increased 8.2%, the accrued year 3.3% and the last twelve months 2.5%.

Compared to July of the previous year, the industrial production of Minas Gerais (8.2%) was mainly influenced by the positive performance of eleven out of thirteen surveyed segments. In this group, automotive vehicles, which increased to 29.8%, was the most notable area, with passenger vehicles being the main responsible product. Mineral extraction (12.4%) followed, reflecting the good performance of iron ore production, favored the increase of exports and the acceleration of the metalworks sector this year. The machines and equipments (42.4%) activity, mainly supported by the growth in the manufacturing of excavators and motor graders, consolidated as the third segment with greatest impact on the general industry. The two segments with negative indexes were metal products (-10.1%) and metallurgy (-0.9%), influenced by decreases in the production of iron and steel structures and steel coils, respectively.

From January to July, the industry in Minas Gerais grew 3.3% compared to the same period of last year. The three most significant impacts on the global rate came from: automotive vehicles (18.1%), machines and equipment (19.3%) and food (3.2%).

In July, the industrial production for the state of Espírito Santo increased 2.2%. The results registered in broader periods were of 3.7% in the accrued year and 2.1% in the last twelve accrued months.

The industry of Espírito Santo registered a positive result (2.2%) compared to July of last year, which could have been higher if it had not been for the registered decrease in mineral extraction (-1.0%), that had its performance affected by the decrease of iron ore production. The manufacturing industry increased 3.5%, favored by the increase in production of food and beverages (22.3%) and basic metallurgy (3.7%). The impact of bonbons and pig iron products should be noted in these two segments, respectively. On the other hand, restraining a higher result for the manufacturing industry, the cellulose and paper activity (-4.7%) was the only one to register a decrease in this form of comparison.

In the accrued year, the industrial production of Espírito Santo grew 3.7%, remaining slightly below the positive rate of the first semester (4.0%), with all industrial segments registering a positive performance. The manufacturing industry registered an increase of 4.4%, mainly influenced by the production of food and beverages (12.8%), which, in its turn, was favored mainly by the increase in production of bonbons and chocolate bars.

In July, the industry of Rio de Janeiro registered an increase of 0.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, in this way maintaining the positive results that were already registered in May (1.7%) and June (3.4%). For indicators that cover broader periods, the industry of Rio de Janeiro registered a positive result for the accrued year (0.2%) and a negative result for the last twelve months (-0.6%).

The increase of 0.8% registered in comparison to the same month of the previous year reflects an expansion trend in eight out of thirteen surveyed industrial areas. The extraction industry, following a positive result in June (3.2%), once again registered a retraction (-3.2%) and is one of the main negative influences. In the manufacturing industry, that registered an increase (1.7%), from the eight areas that registered positive rates, the main influence was exerted by automotive vehicles, where the increase of 35.6% was much influenced by the increase in the manufacturing of heavy trucks and automobiles. The positive performance of non-metallic minerals (34.8%), mainly pressured by the increases in the cut granite and cement items, is noteworthy. On the other hand, pharmaceutical products, with a decrease of 22.3%, and publishing and printing (-12.7%) accounted for the greatest negative impacts, mainly influenced by the decrease in production of medications and CDs, respectively.

With regards to the accrued year, the industry in Rio de Janeiro registered an increase of 0.2%, as a consequence of increases registered in seven out of thirteen surveyed industrial activities. The extraction industry, by decreasing its production by 5.5%, continued to register negative rates in 2004, mainly due to scheduled halts for the maintenance of oil extraction platforms during the first months of the year, and represents the main negative influence in the industry's general result. As for the manufacturing industry, that in its turn revealed a growth in production (1.4%), automotive vehicles (24.2%) and basic metallurgy (7.6%) corresponded for the greatest positive contributions to the global rate. Among the areas of the manufacturing industry that registered a decrease in production, the pharmaceutical (-8.1%) is the main one.

In July, the industry in São Paulo registered an increase in the main indicators: 17.0% compared to July 2003, 11.2% in the accrued year and 6.8% in the last twelve months.

The increase of 17.0% in comparison to July of last year was explained by the increases registered in seventeen out of twenty sectors. On the other hand, the three activities that registered decreases were, in order of influence on the global rate: manufacturing of pharmaceutical products (-14.5%), publishing and printing (-5.0%) and oil refining and alcohol production (-2.5%).

The accrued indicator for the year reached a growth rate of 11.2%, supported by the positive performances in eighteen areas. Automotive vehicles (31.7%) and electronic materials and communications equipment (45.5%) accounted for the main positive impacts, mainly driven by the manufacturing of automobiles and cellular phones. On the other hand, pharmaceutics (-22.0%) and publishing and printing (-2.3%) continued to register negative rates, in which medications and didactic books were identified as the main responsible items for these results.

In July 2004, the industrial production of Paraná registered a change of 0.3% compared to July of last year. The accrued results were also positive in broader periods: 4.7% in the January-July period and 5.3% in the last twelve accrued months.

In the comparison between July 2004 and July 2003, the industry of Paraná registered a change of 0.3%, with this result being the weakest performance since December 2003 (-0.5%). Out of the fourteen surveyed sectors, seven registered an increase, although the positive performance of automotive vehicles (66.1%) should be noted, that continued to demonstrate an accelerated rhythm for the fifth consecutive month due to the increase in production of automobiles; of food (5.2%), with a highlight for the production of poultry meat and giblets; and of wood products (19.3%), that reflected the good performance in the production of wooden panels. In the meantime, the positive effect of these three segments was cancelled, in part, by decreases in oil refining and alcohol production (-30.5%), due to the decrease of diesel oil production; of other chemical products (-35.5%), due to the poor performance of manure and fertilizers and of publishing (-30.1%), due to the retraction in the production of didactic books, brochures and printed materials.

The accrued production for the year, in the period between January and July, increased 4.7%, although it is noted that as of January-March, the growth rhythm has been less intense. It is relevant to note that automotive vehicles have been responsible for the greatest positive influence in the general calculation. On the other hand, oil refining activities have exerted the greatest negative pressure.

In July, the industry in the state of Santa Catarina registered an increase of 18.0% compared to the same period of the previous year, with this being the third consecutive positive rate in this form of comparison. In the indicators for broader periods, the industry of Santa Catarina continues to register positive results: 9.9% in the accrued year and 3.2% in the last twelve months.

The global rate of 18.0%, registered in the comparison with July 2003, resulted from increases in the greater part (ten) of eleven surveyed industrial activities. The performances of machines and equipment (22.4%), food (13.5%) and textiles (26.2%), mainly driven by the increase in foreign demand or refrigerators and freezers, poultry meat and giblets and bath, face and hand towels, correspond for the most significant positive influences. Non-metallic minerals, with a decrease of 1.8%, is the only industrial area that decreased the production in this form of comparison.

The accrued production between January and July, with an increase of 9.9%, demonstrated the predominance of positive results, that reached nine out of eleven surveyed industrial activities. The increases that exerted the greatest pressure on the global rate were registered by machines and equipment (18.8%) and food (10.5%). Highlights among these activities include, respectively, the advances for refrigerators and freezers and deli products. Once again, non-metallic minerals, with a decrease of 6.2%, along with the clothing industry (-2.3%), exerted the main negative impacts on the calculation of the general index in this comparison. Such sectors were influenced by the decreases in the production of bricks and ceramic tiles and men's shirts, respectively.

In July, the industry of Rio Grande do Sul registered an increase of 17.1%, compared to the same month of the previous year, greater than the result for June (15.7%). The indicators for broader periods also registered increases: 7.6% in the accrued year and 4.0% in the last twelve accrued months.

The monthly indicator for the industry of Rio Grande do Sul registered a high of 17.1%, maintaining a sequence of eight positive results in this comparison. This performance was mainly influenced by the performance of the tobacco industry (238.3%), where the magnitude of the result is explained by the low comparison base in July 2003, due to climatic problems that anticipated the end of the harvest. Other relevant positive contributions were registered by metal products (39.1%), automotive vehicles (26.5%) and machines and equipment (12.4%). These activities registered respective increases in the production of, mainly: metal parts and pieces for manual tools; tows trucks, semi-tow trucks, automobiles; sowing machines and non-electric engine hydraulic tools.

The high of 7.6% in the accrued year reflected the growth in eleven out of fourteen surveyed areas in the industry of Rio Grande do Sul. The greatest positive pressures were exerted by tobacco (25.9%), machines and equipment (18.9%) and automotive vehicles (19.0%). These areas registered increases in production, notably, of tobacco products; harvesting and sowing machines; tow trucks, semi-tow trucks and automobiles, respectively. The main decreases took place in the footwear and leather items (-6.1%) and other chemical products (-0.7%) segments, that registered, respectively, decreases in the production of: casual tennis shoes, leather footwear; low density polyethylene and oxygen.

In July, the industry of Goiás registered an increase of 11.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, a more favorable result that the one registered in June (3.7%). Increases were also registered in the indicators for broader periods: 5.7% in the accrued year and 4.3% in the last twelve accrued months.

The result of the industry of Goiás (11.2%), compared to July 2003, was greatly influenced by the performance of extraction industry (183.4%), where the rate's magnitude was mainly explained by the low production of asbestos registered in July 2003, a period that was characterized by collective holidays. With a significant growth, in terms of the composition of the global rate, the food and beverages sector (6.3%) also stands-out, mainly due to the production of pies and flour from the extraction of soy oil. On the other hand, the only negative contribution came from chemical products (-1.4%) due to the decrease in production of fertilizer of animal origin.

In the accrued year, the industry of Goiás registered a growth of 5.7%, reflecting the positive performance of four out of five surveyed segments. Among these, the most significant were food and beverages (5.9%) and chemical products (13.6%). These areas registered respective increases in the production of the following items: prepared tomato sauces, soy pies and bagasse; medications and fertilizers of animal origin.
