Industry grows in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed in May

Increase of industrial output in Brazil, from April to May 2017, in the seasonally-adjusted series, was observed in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed, with Ceará (5.9%), Bahia (3.6%) and Pará (3.1%) as the main highlights. With these results, the first area in this list recorded the second biggest increase, with a cumulative 7.5% in the period; the second one recovered after a decrease of 0.7% recorded in the previous month; and the third area eliminated part of the cumulative decrease of 7.5% registered between February and April 2017. Rio Grande do Sul (2.5%), São Paulo (2.5%), Santa Catarina (1.4%), Paraná (1.4%), Northeast Region (1.3%), Goiás (0.8%) and Pernambuco (0.1%) complete the group of areas with output increase in the month. On the other hand, Amazonas (-3.6%) recorded the most significant negative result and has remained on a downward trend as observed in the previous month (-0.6%). Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving index for the industry overall indicated slight increase of 0.1% in the quarter ended May 2017 in comparison with the previous month, after recording negative rates for two months in a row: March (-0.5%) and April (-0.2%). In terms of areas there were seven positive rates, the main highlçights being Bahia (1.6%), Ceará (1.5%), Pernambuco (1.0%), São Paulo (0.8%) and Northeast Region (0.5%). On the other hand, Paraná (-1.1%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.%), Minas Gerais (-0.%) and Santa Catarina (-0.4%) had the most significant decreases since May 2017.

In relation to May 2016, industry recorded increase in 10 of the 15 areas surveyed

The comparison with the same month in the previous year shows increase of 4.0% in May 2017, with positive increases in tem of the fifteen areas surveyed. It is worth mentioning that May 2017 (22 days) had one bsuness day more than April (21). This month, Santa Catarina (9.5%) accounted for the most significant increase, affected by the increases in the output of manufacturing of wearing apparel and accessories (knit sets, apparel and accessories for babies, cotton blouses and similar ones for women), basic metals (artifacts and and pieces made of cast iron, cars and hollow welded steel profiles) and food products (refined soybeans). Paraná (7.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (7.4%), Ceará (7.4%) and São Paulo (4.3%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (4.0%), whereas Pará (2.9%), Rio de Janeiro (2.9%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Northeast Region (1.4%) and Espírito Santo (1.2%) completed the group of areas Wirth increase of output in the month. On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-3.5%) and Pernambuco (-3.2%) accounted for the most significant decreases in May 2017, mainly due to the negative performance of food products (frozen beef, crude soybean oil and cake, bagasse, bran and other residue from soybean extraction) and wood produtcs (sawn wood, plained or polished), in the former location; and of food products (cured beef or pork and related products and magarine) and non-metallic mineral products (“Portland” cement), in the latter. The other negative results were those of Bahia (-1.0%), Goiás (-0.6%) and Amazonas (-0.1%).

In the cumulative indicator for the period January-May 2017, against the same period in the previous year, output increase was observed in tem of the fifteen areas surveyed, the main highlights being Rio de Janeiro (4.6%), Santa Catarina (4.3%), Espírito Santo (3.4%) and Paraná (3.1%). Minas Gerais (2.1%), Amazonas (1.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%), Goiás (1.5%), Pernambuco (1.3%) and Pará (0.2%) complete the group of areas with positive results in the end of the first five months of the year. In these locations, the biggest dynamism was mainly influenced by factors related to the increased production of capital goods (mainly those for the agricultural or construction sector); intermediate goods (iron ore, petroleum, pulp, basic metals and soybean extraction subproducts); durable consumer goods (cars and "brown goods"); and semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods (footwear, textiles and wearing apparel). On the other hand, Bahia (-6.6%) recorded the most significant decrease in the monthly index, mainly affected by the negative behavior of baisic metals (copper bars, profiles and rebars and copper alloys) and of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel, naphthas for petrochemical industry and automotive gasoline). The other negative results were those of the Northeast Region (-1.6%), Mato Grosso (-1.4%), São Paulo (-0.6%) and Ceará (-0.2%).

The cumulative indicator in the last twelve months, having decreased 2.4% in May 2017 in terms of the industry overall, has remained on a downward trend since June 2016 (-9.7%). In terms of area, eleven of the fifteen ones surveyed had negative rates in May 2017, but twelve of them recorded bigger dynamism agarins figure of last April. The main increases between April and May 2017 were those of Espírito Santo (from -11.0% to -9.3%), Paraná (from -1,2% to 0.3%), Santa Catarina (from 0.0% to 1.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -1.6% to -0.6%), Rio de Janeiro (from 0.9% to 1.7%) and São Paulo (from -2.6% to -1.7%), whereas Mato Grosso (from -3.7% to -4.9%) and Pará (from 5.9% to 5.5%) recorded decreases between the two periods.
