Services sector drops in February (-4.0%)

Compared with the same month a year ago, the services sector dropped 4.0% in terms of volume of services in February, having already changed -5.0% in January 2016 and in December 2015. All the segments registered negative changes: Services rendered to families (-1.4%); Information and communication services (-5.3%); Professional, administrative and complementary services 
(-4.3%); Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-2.0%) and Other services (-6.1%). The cumulative rate in the year stood at -4.5% and, in 12 months, at -3.7%. The special aggregate of Tourism activities rose for the second month in a row: 1.3% in February and 0.5% in January, against a drop of 1.6% in December. Nominal revenue grew 1.9% in February over February 2015, after falling 0.1% in January and increasing 0.3% in December. The contribution of the segments to the overall rate of volume were as follows, in order of contribution: Information and communication services (-2.2 p.p.), Professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.8 p.p.), Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-0.6 p.p.), Other services (-0.3 p.p.) and Services rendered to families (-0.1 p.p.).

The segment of Services rendered to families retracted 1.4% in terms of volume of services in February over the same month in the previous year, against -4.1% in January and -7.3% in December, remaining in a constant series of negative volume changes since May 2014. The cumulative change in the year stood at -2.9% and, in 12 months, at -5.5%. Housing and food services changed -2.7% and Other services rendered to families, 6.4%.
Having already recorded negative changes in January (2.1%) and in December (0.4%), Information and communication services registered a negative change of 5.3% in terms of volume of services over the same month a year ago. The cumulative rate in the year stood at -3.7% and, in 12 months, at -0.8%.
Information and communication technology services – ICT changed -4.7% in terms of volume of services, highlighted by Telecommunications (-3.9%) and Information technology services (-7.5%). Audiovisual, publishing and news agency services dropped 10.4% in terms of volume of services against the same month in the previous year.
Having dropped 9.1% in January and 8.8% in December, the segment of Professional, administrative and complementary services fell 4.3% in February, in terms of volume of services, compared with the same month a year ago. The cumulative volume change in the year stood at%-6.7 and, in 12 months, at -4.8%.
Technical-professional services, which correspond to knowledge-intensive services, rose 0.5% in terms of volume of services and Administrative and complementary services, which encompass labor-intensive services, declined 5.7%.
The segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a negative change of volume of 2.0% in February over the same month a year ago. In January and December, this segment recorded negative changes of 5.8% and 6.9%, respectively. The cumulative volume change in the year stood at -4.0% and, in 12 months, at -5.3%.
In terms of mode, the figures for volume were: Land transportation (-6.8%), Water transportation (11.7%) and Air transportation (14,2%). The activity of Storage services, support activities for transportation and mailing activities registered a decrease of 0.1%.
The segment of Other services changed -6.1% in terms of volume in February, after changing -7.9% in January and -10.3% in December.  The cumulative change in the year stood at 
-7.0% and, in 12 months, at -8.8%.
Tourism activities rose 1.3% in February over February 2015, following the increase of 0.5% in January. In December 2015, the tourism sector dropped 1.6%. The cumulative change in the year stood at 0.9% and, in 12 months, at -1.2%.
Regional results: Rondônia, Roraima, Federal District and Mato Grosso, the highest rises
Compared with the same month a year ago, the biggest positive changes of the regional results of the services sector in February were: Rondônia (16.5%), Roraima (9.8%), the Federal District and Mato Grosso (both with 8.2%). The biggest negative changes in volume were reported in Amapá (-18.3%), Amazonas (-18.1%) and Sergipe (-9.7%).
The analysis of the Tourism activities according to the selected Federation Units showed positive changes in volume in the Federal District (12.8%), Goiás (6.2%), Pernambuco (5.7%), Ceará (5.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.0%). The negative changes in volume were registered in Paraná (-6.9%), Santa Catarina (-5.3%), Minas Gerais (-3.7%), Espírito Santo (-1.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.1%), Bahia (-0.4%) and São Paulo (-0.3%). It should also be highlighted that all the selected Federation Units increased their nominal revenue in February, when compared with the same month in the previous year.
