IPCA: 0.35% in June

The Extended National Consumer Price Index - IPCA changed by 0.35% in June, that is, less than half of the May rate. As a result, the first semester of the year closed at 4.42%, below the 6.17% registered in the same period in 2015. Considering the last twelve months, the index fell to 8.84%, versus 9.32% recorded in the previous twelve months. In June 2015, the IPCA recorded a change of 0.79%. Seven of the nine groups of products and services surveyed recorded deceleration in the growth rate, from May to June. Only Transportation (-0.53%), with less significant decrease and Communication (0.04%) recorded higher results than in May.

Food and beverages (0.71%), was a little below the rate recorded in the previous month, and accounted for 0.18 percentage points (p.p.) of the IPCA, the biggest contribution among the groups, The main highlights were pinto beans (0.11 percentage points), since the kilogram of this item rose 41.78%, and carton milk (0.10 percentage points), the liter of which became 10.16% more expensive. Together, these two items accounted for 0.21 percentage points, which represented 60% of the month's IPCA. The main increases in terms of food products can be seen in the table below.

The item water and sewage fare recorded a chnage of 2.64%, given the contributions from Salvador (7.98%), with adjustment of 9.98% starting on June 06; Brasília (7.69%), where the adjustment of 7.95% took place on June 01; Belo Horizonte (5.57%), with rise of 13.90% in effect since May 13, and also the revision of the tax policies of the water and sewage company; and São Paulo (3.25%), with adjustement of 8.40% since May 12. Although it recorded no decrease, the item electricity, with a change of 0.05%, reflected the results of Curitiba (-2.58%), with a 13.83% reduction in the fare on June 24; Porto Alegre (-0.75%), with decrease of 7.50% ein one of the concessionaries on June 19 and Belo Horizonte (3.26%), with hike of 3.78% on May 28. Besides, in eight of the 13 áreas surveyed there was decrease of PIS/COFINS shares,whereas in the other ones there was decrease.

Regarding the indexes by area, the biggest one was that of Belo Horizonte, with 0.66 %, due to the contribution of water and sewage fare (5.57%). These items reflected the price adjustment of 13.90% in effect since May 13, and also the revision in the tax structure adopted by the company in charge of this servisse. Electricity bills rose 3.26%, considering the price adjustment of 3.78% in effect since May 28. The lowest index was that of Porto Alegre, with decrease of 0.02%. See the results by area surveyed:

In order to estimate the index of the month, the prices collected from May 31 to June 29, 2016 (reference) were compared with the prices in force from April 29 to May 30, 2016 (base).

The IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monthly income of one to forty minimum wages, whatever the source. It encompasses ten metropolitan areas in the country, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande and Brasília.

ÍNDICE NACIONAL DE PREÇOS AO CONSUMIDOR – INPC

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC changed by 0.47% in June, recording alsmost half of the May rate, which was 0.98%. As a result, the first semester of the year closed at 5.09%, below the 6.80% registered in the same period of 2015. Regarding the last 12 months, the rate was 9.49%, below the 9.82% relative to the previous 12 months. In June 2015, the INPC was 0.77%.

Food products recorded 0.83% in June, the same change as in May. The group of non-food products changed by 0.31% in June, below the May rate (1.05%).

Among the indexes by area, the highest one was that of Campo Grande (0.81%), given the rise of prices of food for consumption at home (2.75%), which was above the national average (0.87%), and also of electricity (2.20%), due to the rise of the PIS/COFINS share. The metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (0.08%), had the lowest index. See, below, a table with June results by áaea surveyed.
