Industrial output increases in six of the 14 areas surveyd in July

Increased pace of industrial production was observed from June to July 2016, in the seasonally-adjusted series, in six of the 14 areas surveyed. The main increases were recorded by Pernambuco (3.9%), Paraná (2.6%) e Espírito Santo (2.3%). São Paulo (1.6%), Minas Gerais (1.1%) and Ceará (0.4%), which completed the group of areas with positive indexes in July 2016. On the other hand, Bahia (-11.2%) had the main negative result in the month, with its fourth consecutive decrease. The other negative rates were those of Santa Catarina (-3.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.3%), Northeast Region (-2.1%) and Pará (-2.0%), whereas Amazonas (0.0%) and Goiás (0.0%) repeated the same level as in June.

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average for the total of national industry increased 0.6% in the quarter ended in July 2016 versus the previous month, after recording increase in June (0.7%) and May (0.8%). In regional terms, ten areas had positive rates, the main highlights being advances in Amazonas (4.1%), Pernambuco (1.8%), Paraná (1.5%), Rio de Janeiro (1.1%), Santa Catarina (1.0%), Ceará (1.0%) and São Paulo (0.8%). on th other hand, Bahia, with a decrease of 4.4%, accounted for the main decrease in July 2016. 

Versus the same month a year before, industry recorded a decrease of 6.6% in July 2016, with 13 of the 15 areas surveyed recording negative results. The most significant decreases were recorded in Espírito Santo (-21.2%), Bahia (-19.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-11.9%). The  Northeast Region (-8.1%) and Goiás (-6.8%) also recorded negative results below the nationa average (-6.6%),whereas Santa Catarina (-5.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-5.0%), Amazonas (-4.4%), Minas Gerais (-4.3%), Pernambuco (-3.7%), Ceará (-2.0%), São Paulo (-1.8%) and Paraná (-0.1%) complete th group of areas with negative results in the month. On the other hand, Pará (9.9%) and Mato Grosso (3.1%) recorded increases in July 2016.

In the cumulative indicator in the period January-July 2016, the decrease of national output affected 13 of the 15 areas surveyed, with decreases below the national average in three of them (-8.7%): Espírito Santo (-22.4%), Pernambuco (-15.7%) and Amazonas (-15.0%). Minas Gerais (-8.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-7.8%), São Paulo (-7.5%), Goiás (-7.0%), Paraná (-6.9%), Santa Catarina (-5.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.7%), Ceará (-5.1%), Northeast Region (-3.8%) and Bahia (-3.1%) completed the group of areas with negative results in the first seven months of the year. On the other hand, Pará (10.2%) and Mato Grosso (9.9%) recorded increases in the cumulative indexes in the year.

The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last 12 months, with decrease of  9.6% in July 2016 for the industry overall, reduced slightly the pace of decrease in comparison with June results (-9.8%). In regional terms, 13 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates in July 2016, but nine of them recorded more dynamism compared with the June index. The main increased between June and July were recorded in Amazonas (from -18.1% to -17.1%), Ceará (from -8.9% to -7.9%), São Paulo (from -11.0% to -10.1%) and Paraná (from -10.0% to -9.1%), whereas Espírito Santo (from -14.4% to -16.5%), Bahia (from -2.8% to -4.7%) and Goiás (from -3.4% to -4.8%) recorded the most significant decreases between the two periods.
