Services sector retreats 0.5% from May to June

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the volume of the services sector dropped 0.5% in June 2016 in relation to May, after changing 0.2% in May and -1.3% in April. Compared with June 2015, this sector fell 3.4%, registering the highest negative change for June in the time series started in January 2012. Considering these figures, both the cumulative rates in the first semester and in the last 12 months stayed at -4.9%.

Concerning the activities, the segments of information and communication services (0.2%) and transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.1%) increased in relation to May 2016. The segments of services rendered to families (-0.5%), professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.4%) and other services (-1.5%) dropped. The special aggregate of tourism activities changed -0.6% compared with the immediately previous month.

Nominal revenue changed -0.3% in June in relation to May and 0.6% compared with June 2015. The cumulative rate in the year stood at 0.2% and, in 12 months, at 0.3%. The complete publication of the Monthly Survey of Services released by the IBGE can be accessed here.

The contribution of the segments to the overall volume rate, compared with June 2015 (non-adjusted series), was, in order of contribution: transportation, support activities for transportation, mailing and professional activities, administrative and complementary services, both with -1.1 pp; communication and information services, with -0.7 pp; services rendered to families, with -0.4 pp and other services, which contributed with -0.1 pp.

In the first semester of 2016, services sector declines 2.8% in relation to the second semester of 2015

The first semester of 2016 pointed to a decline of 2.8% in the volume of the services sector in relation to the previous semester, the same downturn as in the second half of 2015, in the seasonally-adjusted series. In comparison with the first semester of 2015 (non-adjusted), the services sector had a cumulative drop of 4.9%.

Concerning activities, compared with the 2nd semester of 2015, the segment of transportation is the highlight: support activities for transportation and mailing recorded the biggest drop (-7.0%), followed by professional, administratives and complementary services (-3.3%); services rendered to families (-1.5%) and information and communication services (-1.2%). The segment of other services remained unchanged (0.0%) and the tourism activities dropped 2.0%.

Regional results: Amazonas, Roraima and Rondônia reported the biggest drops in relation to May

Concerning regional results of the services sector in June, 13 Federation Units recorded decline, 13, increase, and one remained unchanged. The highest changes were recorded in Rio Grande do Norte (3.0%), Paraíba (2.8%) and Alagoas (2.6%). The highest negative changes were reported by Amazonas (-3.6%), Roraima (-3.0%) and Rondônia (-2.6%).

Compared with figures in the same month a year ago, only four Federation Units reported positive changes: Acre (12.3%), Roraima (7.1%), Federal District (4.9%) and Tocantins (3.1%). The biggest negative changes were those of Amazonas (-15.1%), Amapá (-14.8%) and Mato Grosso (-13.1%).

 

Concerning the regional figures in May, by selected Federation Units, only two states registered negative changes in terms of volume: Rio de Janeiro (-1.4%) and Minas Gerais (-0.6%). Positive changes were recorded in São Paulo (9.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.1%), Paraná (3.7%), Goiás (3.2%), Santa Catarina (2.5%), Federal District (2.4%), Espírito Santo (1.5%), Ceará (1.2%), Pernambuco (1.1%) and Bahia (0.3%).

In comparison with the same month a year ago, positive changes were recorded in the Federal District (6.1%), Pernambuco (5.3%), São Paulo (3.0%), Goiás (1.7%), Ceará (1.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%). Negative changes were recorded in Bahia (-13.5%), Minas Gerais (-9.9%), Santa Catarina (-5.9%), Espírito Santo (-2.9%), Rio de Janeiro and Paraná (both with -2.4%).
