IBGE has updated information on the Sustainable Development Indicators at the IBGE Aggregated Database (SIDRA). The 63 indicators are subdivided into four 'pillars' (environmenatal, social, economic and institutional), in compliance with what is stated in the Blue book proposed in 2001 by the UN Commission ofn Sustainable Development (CDS). More than 100 tables covering 19 topics are used to present indicator results. These tables, which follow the the time series, update previously released indicators, whenever possible.

The SDI is one of the most important sources of systematized information on environmental, social, economic and institutional aspects in the development of Brazil. Mainly in terms of environmental information, the indicators stand out as a source of ordered data that can be analyzed and associated, and also combined with social, economic and institutional information.

The SDI environmental perspective deals with topics related to greehouse gas emissions, air and water pollution, use of pesticides, forest fires, deforestation, and also information on basic sanitation, among other themes. The social perspective evaluates the fulfillment of human needs, improvement of quality of living and social justice. The indicators refer to topics such as demography, employment, education, health and violence. The economic perspective deals with data related to GDP, consumption of electricity ad participation of renewable sources in the supply of energy. The institutional perspective deals with topics such as multilateral agreements, environment legislation, expenditure on research and development and cultural heritage.

The flexibility of SIDRA allows users to select what type of information they need and how data should be presented. The system generates tables and graphs that can be customized according to user needs. The system makes users more independent when selecting and formatting the needed information, and enables access to data not presented in the printed versions of the SDI. The inclusion of the SDI in the SIDRA platform consolidates the role of the indicators in the evaluation of of Brazilian sustainable development, and represents an updated and democratic form of access to these data by researchers and government sectors. This way, IBGE can fulfill its mission of portraying Brazil and providing the necessary means for society to make decisons about the path to follow towards the development of the country.
