Services sector grows 1.0% in April in relation to March

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector grew 1.0% in volume of services rendered in April over the previous month, after declining 2.6% in March (revised) and rising 0.2% in February. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the sector retracted 5.6% compared with April 2016. This was the biggest retraction for April, as were the retreats in March (5.2%) and February (5.3%). Considering these figures, the cumulative rate in the year stayed at -4.9% and, in 12 months, at -5.0%.

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing rose 1.0%; the segments of Services rendered to families and Professional, administrative and complementary services did not change (0.0%), and the segments of Information and communication services and Other services dropped 0.2% and 5.8%, respectively. The special aggregate of Tourism activities declined 2.0% compared with the immediately previous month.

Nominal revenue positively changed in April (0.5%) over March in the seasonally-adjusted series, and registered -0.4% compared with the same month last year in the seasonally-unadjusted series. The cumulative rate in the year stood at 0.6% and, in 12 months, at 0.0%. The complete publication of the Monthly Survey of Services released by the IBGE can be accessed here.

Results by activity, against April 2016

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the analysis of the results by activity in relation to April 2016 pointed out that all segments registered negative changes in volume, as follows: Other services (-16.4%); Professional, administrative and complementary services (-11.4%); Services rendered to families (-3.5%); Information and communication services (-2.2%) and Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-1.5%). The special aggregate of Tourism activities retreated 6.4% over April 2016. In the first four months of the year, the cumulative figures recorded the biggest drops in the segments of Other services (-11.3%) and Professional, administrative and complementary services (-9.9%). Of the cumulative figures in 12 months, the segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing posted the biggest drop (-6.7%), followed by Professional, administrative and complementary services (-6.6%). Technical-professional services stood out in this context, as it has been registering expressive retreats, due to the low demand from the industrial sector and from the governments.

Composition of the overall rate

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the contributions of the segments to the overall rate of volume were as follows: Professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.7 p.p.); Other services (-1.2 p.p.); Information and communication services (-0.8 p.p.); Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (-0.6 p.p.) and Services rendered to families (-0.3 p.p.).

 

Regional results: Rio Grande do Norte, Rondônia and Alagoas register the biggest drops in relation to March

 In the seasonally-adjusted series, the regional results of the services sector in April showed that the biggest positive changes of volume over March were reported in Paraná (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.2%) and São Paulo (2.0%). The biggest negative changes were recorded in Rio Grande do Norte (-6.6%), Rondônia (-6.0%) and Alagoas (-4.6%).

In the comparison with the same month a year ago in the seasonally-unadjusted series, Paraná remained unchanged (0.0%) and the other Federation Units posted negative changes, being the biggest ones registered in Roraima and Amapá (both with -16.8%), Rondônia (-16.2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-13.4%). 

 

Tourism activities: Federal District grows 4.4% between March and April

The seasonally-adjusted analysis of volume figures for Tourism activities in the Federation Units showed that the positive changes were recorded in the Federal District (4.4%), São Paulo (1.9%) and Pernambuco (0.8%). The negative changes were registered in Espírito Santo (-12.6%), Minas Gerais (-5.5%), Bahia (-5.3%), Ceará (-5.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-3.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.8%), Goiás (-1.6%), Paraná (-1.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.4%). 

In the seasonally-unadjusted comparison with the same month last year, the positive changes were as follows: Goiás (12.5%), Santa Catarina (11.3%), Pernambuco (3.7%) and Paraná (2.3%). The negative changes were: Espírito Santo (-22.5%), the Federal District (-21.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-20.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.4%), São Paulo (-3.8%), Minas Gerais (-3.7%), Ceará (-3.4%) and Bahia (-0.8%).
