Retail sales up 1.0% in April

In April 2017, the national retail trade recorded rates of 1.0% in volume of sales and of 1.3% in nominal revenue, over the previous month, after being seasonally adjusted. The result for the volume of sales offset part of the 1.6% decrease accumulated in the two previous years. As a result, the change of the quarterly moving average stood virtually stable (-0.2%), both for the volume and for the nominal revenue of sales.

In the non-adjusted series, the comparison with April 2016 showed growth of 1.9% for the total of the retail trade, accumulating in the first four months of the year, in terms of volume of sales, a decrease of 1.6%. The cumulative indicator in the last twelve months, decreasing 4.6%, recorded the lowest rate since January 2016 (-5.3%). For the nominal revenue of sales, the same indicators proceed with positive changes of: 3.4% over April 2016, 1.5% in the cumulative index of the year and of 3.4% in the last twelve months.

In relation to the extended retail trade, which includes, besides retail, the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction Material, the advance in relation to March 2017 was 1.5% for the volume of sales and of 2.3% for the nominal revenue, both in the seasonally-adjusted series. In relation to April 2016, the extended retail changed -0.4% for the volume of sales and 0.7% in the nominal revenue. Concerning cumulative rates, the changes were of -1.8% in the year and of -6.3% in the last 12 months for the volume of sales, while for the nominal revenue the rates were of 0.3% and -0.4%, respectively.

Retail trade records advances in three activities

 

From March to April 2017, the 1.0% advance in the retail trade was seen in three of the eight activities surveyed. The main positive influence was of the sector Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, which presented an increase of 0.9% in sales, after a 6.0% drop accumulated in the two previous months.

Next are the activities of Fabric, apparel and footwear (3.5%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (10.2%), which also recorded positive rates over March 2017.

The negative pressure came from the segments of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-4.1%),Furniture and household appliances (-2.8%), Fuels and lubricants (-0.8%); and pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (-0.4%). On the other hand, the sales in the sector of other articles of personal and household use (0.1%) stood stable in relation to the previous month.

O comércio varejista ampliado mostrou avanço de 1,5%, frente a março de 2017, também influenciado pelo desempenho de Hipermercados, supermercados, produtos alimentícios, bebidas e fumo, na medida em que as vendas de Veículos e motos, partes e peças (-0,3%) e Material de construção (-1,9%) mostraram decréscimos.

The  extended retail trade had an advance of 1.5% over March 2017, also influenced by the behavior of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, since the sales of  Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (-0.3%) and  construction material (-1.9%) posted decrease.

In the comparison with April 2016, the volume of sales in the retail trade registered an advance of 1.9%, interrupting 24 months of negative consecutive rates in a row.

April's result was mainly leveraged by the performance of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco  (3.5%), which had the highest contribution to the global rate of retail. Fabric, apparel and footwear (10.8%); Other articles of personal and domestic use  (3.4%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (4.5%) also stood out in relation to April 2016.

The negative pressure came from the segments of fuels and lubricants (-4,2%), Pharmaceutical, orthop. and medical goods and toiletries (-3,2%); and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-3.2%). However, the sales of Furniture and household appliances (-0.1%) held steady in relation to April 2016.

The sector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with a 3.5% change in the volume of sales in April over the same month a year ago, exerted the highest positive impact on the retail total rate. Despite the positive result in April, the sector accumulates in the first four months of the year a loss of 1.0% and, in 12 months, of 2.4%.

Over April 2016, the second biggest positive contribution to the formation of the global rate was that of fabric, apparel and footwear, which  presented growth of 10.8% in the volume of sales. The sector has been registering a positive performance in this comparison since February 2017, suffering the positive impact of the incentive from regular marketing campaigns, coupled with the comparison to the depressed base of 2016. As a result, the cumulative indicator for the first four months of the year recorded a 6.3% advance, whereas the cumulative change in the last 12 months was negative (-5.9%).

Among the negative highlights, the segment of  fuels and lubricants presented a decrease of 4.2% in the volume of sales in relation to April 2016, pushing negatively the total retail result. In relation to the cumulative rates, the changes were of -5.2% for the first four months of the year and of -7.8%, cumulative index in 12 months.

The sector of Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic goods and toiletriesregistered decrease of 3.2% in the volume of sales over April 2016. Though the trade of medicine is continuous, the cumulative rates remain in the negative scope: -3.0% in the yer and of -3.5% for the last 12 months. The performance of this sector has been influenced by the price rise in the group of Pharmaceutical Products measured by the IPCA[1], which remain above the general price index.

The extended retail trade recorded, for the volume of sales, a change of -0.4% over April 2016. On the one hand the performance reflected the growth of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.5%); on the other hand, it reflected the drop of the segment of vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces(-12.0%). construction material, with a decrease of -1.3%, practically did not influence the result of the retail trade.

 

Between March and April, sales advance in 14 of the 27 Federation Units

 

Between March and April, in the seasonally adjusted series, the retail sales increases in 14 of the 27 Federation Units in relation to the previous month. The greatest advances came from São Paulo (8.2%), Goiás (4.1%), Acre (3.6%) and Amazonas (2.6%). The highest negative rates were seen in Tocantins(-10.3%), Rondônia (-2.4%) and Sergipe (-2.0%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (-0.1%) stood practically stable.

In the comparison with April 2016, the increase of the volume of sales in the retail reached 13 of the 27 Federation Units (24.5%) and Amazonas (9.9%).  The highlight in the participation in the retail trade rate composition was Santa Catarina (24.5%) and São Paulo (1.7%).

In the extended retail trade, 17 states presented negative changes for the volume of sales, in the comparison with the same month a year ago. The greatest drops occurred in Rondônia (-11,0%), Goiás (-10,5%) and Piauí (-9,8%). As to the participation in the extended retail trade rate composition the highlight was São Paulo (-3.1%).
