The volume of services in the country changed by 0.3% in July 2025, its sixth consecutive positive result. So the sector has reached a cumulative increase of 2.4% since February and this month reached its highest point in the time series. Year-to-date, the sector has a cumulative increase of 2.6%, and the 12-month increase rate (2.9%) slowed the pace of growth from that observed in June 2025 (3.0%). Data come from the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS), released today (12) by the IBGE.
The increase in the month was due to growth in three of the five activities surveyed, with a focus on information and communication, which expanded by 1.0%. According to the survey manager Rodrigo Lobo, the growth was due to "the positive performance in the two main segments of the sector: both telecommunications (+0.7%) and information technology services (+1.2%) recorded positive rates this month. Within the latter segment, companies operating with "portals, content providers, and other information services on the internet" stood out.
“Among the other sectors, growth in professional, administrative, and complementary services (0.4%) and services provided to families (0.3%) stands out. Among the other sectors, increases in professional, administrative, and complementary services (0.4%) and services rendered to households (0.3%) stand out. Conversely, transportation (-0.6%) accounted for the biggest drop, followed by other services (-0.2%). "The transportation sector's decline was explained by a lower revenue from pipeline transportation and airway passenger transportation. The decline in airway transportation volume in July is related both to the increase in ticket prices and to the higher comparison basis in recent months, as airway transportation had seen five consecutive months of growth, with a cumulative gain of 22.1%. Therefore, this month's decline (-4.0%) onlypartially offsets a the progress achieved between February and June 2025," Lobo concludes.
National growth was observed in 12 of the 27 states, with the main positive impacts coming from São Paulo (1.7%), Paraná (1.7%), Mato Grosso do Sul (5.7%), Santa Catarina (0.9%), and Rondônia (10.9%).
From January to July of this year, the volume of services increased by 2.6% against the same period in 2024. The biggest positive contribution came from information and communication (6.0%), driven by the increase in revenues from companies in the segments of portals, content providers and other information services on the Internet; software development and licensing; data processing, application service providers and Internet hosting services; information technology consulting; and technical support, maintenance and other information technology services.
The remaining increases came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (2.1%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (2.3%); and services rendered to households (1.3%). By area, the increase in volume of services was observed by 19 of the 27 states, with São Paulo standing out (4.3%).
Tourism activities drop by 0.7% in July
In July 2025, the tourism activities index decreased 0.7% against the previous month, the third consecutive negative result, a period in which it had a accumulated a loss of 2.3%. With this performance, the tourism sector is 10.3% above its February 2020 level and 3.0% below the peakin the time series, reached in December 2024. The survey manager explains that the decline "is directly related to the decline in airway travel this month."
In terms of location, 10 of the 17 areas surveyed followed this downward trend in national tourism activity (-0.7%). The most significant negative impact was found in Rio de Janeiro (-2.5%), followed by Bahia (-2.1%) and Amazonas (-5.9%). Conversely, São Paulo (0.6%) led tourism increase this month, followed by Paraná (2.0%) and Minas Gerais (1.1%).
The July 2025 /July 2024 comparison shows the tourism activity volume index in Brazil extended by 3.3%, the 14th consecutive positive result, driven primarily by revenue from companies operating in the passenger airway transportation, catering, and lodging reservation services sectors.
Eleven of the 17 states where the indicator is surveyed showed increase in tourism-related services from July 2024, with São Paulo (4.9%) standing out, followed by Rio de Janeiro (4.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (18.6%). On the other hand, Minas Gerais (-8.1%) accounted for the main negative impact in the month.
July sees a drop in passenger transport and an increase in cargo transportation
Passenger transportation volume in Brazil fell 2.1% in July from June, after five months of increase, making up for part of the cumulative increase in the period (13.9%). Thus, the segment is 9.6% above the February 2020 (pre-pandemic), although 15.7% below the time series peak (February 2014).
Cargo transportation, meanwhile, grew 1.0%, its second consecutive positive result, with a cumulative increae of 1.8%, but still 4.8% below the time series peak (July 2023). Against to pre-pandemic levels, cargo transportation is 37.5% higher than in February 2020.
Compared to the July 2024 figure, passenger transportation increased 8.7% in July 2025, the 11th consecutive positive result, while cargo transportation increased 3.2%, the third consecutive increase.

More about the survey
The Monthly Survey of Services produces indicators to monitor the short-term behavior of the services sector in Brazil. The survey investigates the gross revenue from services in formal enterprises employing 20 or more persons, in which the main activity is a non-financial service, excluding the areas of health and education. It produces results for Brazil and all the Federation Units. The results are available on Sidra. The next release of the Monthly Survey of Services, related to August, will be on October 14.
