Held at the IBGE´s Ecological Reserve this Thursday (29), in Brasília (DF), the celebration of the 89 years of the IBGE closed a number of simultaneous activities, highlighted by the 3rd National Officers Meeting on May 28-29, which discussed ten strategic themes for the preparation of the General Plan of Statistical, Geographic and Data Information (PGIEGD). About to complete 90 years, the anniversary party was a pre-90, beginning the countdown to complete 9 decades of its foundation.

The celebration counted with the presence of the IBGE directors, coordinators, superintendents, officers and guests, active and retired officers of the Reserve and of the Superintendence of the Federal District, as well as it was streamed through Digital IBGE and IBGE´s social media. In the opening session, IBGEans were distinguished with postcards with images of the Cerrado´s fauna and flora. Then conductor Marcos Farias, in the accordion, and singer Milla Muniz presented the National Anthem for the public present at Recor.

Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE, reminded that May 29 is also the Statistician´s Day and the Geographer´s Day, paying a tribute to the professionals that made the IBGE a unique institution for gathering these two areas. "Approaching 90 years does not mean an aged institution, but rather an opportunity to rebuild itself before the challenges we are facing, like the Digital Era.

"This celebration is not only for the past, but for the present and future as well," praised Pochmann. The president also highlighted the importance of investing in better labor conditions, better career structure and compensation in order to go on producing more qualified data and information, key for the development of Brazil.

As the Deputy Secretary of Institutional Articulation of the Ministry of Planning and Budget, Marcelo Ribeiro Moreira represented Minister Simone Tebet and reinforced that the IBGE is a true patrimony of the State and, above all, of the Brazilian people, requiring to look after its operation and credibility. "No nation in the world develops without reliable information on its territory, economy, climate and people," pointed him out.

The secretary reminded the 1st IBGE Dialog 90 Years, held in November 2023 at the Parada de Lucas unit, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and the second edition, at the Ministry of Finance, in May 2024, also in Rio de Janeiro. "Along 89 years, the IBGE subsidizes the production of public policies, urban planning, public decision taking and decision of private investments in a number of themes, like education, health, security, housing and economic development. The IBGE is the quality seal of the statistics in Brazil," highlighted Moreira.

Also present in the ceremony, Luciana Servo, President of the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), highlighted the work of the IBGE towards public policies along these years. "We would not maintain long-lived institutions without people collaborating all the time, either officers, collaborators or workers. They are those who make the IBGE a national and international reference, an office that makes the difference in several actions of the Brazilian State," highlighted Servo. Servo also reinforced the continuous need for innovation and adaptation to the world changes, as well as highlighted the partnership between institutions like Ipea, IBGE and international organizations, key for strengthening the Brazilian State.

During the celebration, Marcio Pochmann donated a drone to the Reserve´s Fire Brigade to assist in fighting against fires in the area. Officers who did not know the Reserve had the opportunity to make a guided visit to the area.

A journey of nearly nine decades

Initially called National Statistical Institute (INE), the IBGE was created on May 29, 1936, during the Getúlio Vargas administration. Its founder, statistician Mário Augusto Teixeira de Freitas, aimed at creating an articulate national statistical system to precisely diagnose the Brazilian reality. In 1938, the name was changed to Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, improving its skills to include the production of geographic, cartographic and environmental information.

As the venue for the celebration of 89 years, the IBGE´s Ecological Reserve was created in 1975 to perform a key role in the activities of environmental research and biodiversity monitoring of the Brazilian Cerrado. With nearly 1,400 hectares, the reserve houses hundreds of native species of the fauna and flora, serving as a reference for ecological studies in the long term. Besides its scientific function, this space represents the IBGE commitment with the sustainability and integration between geographic knowledge and environmental preservation, aligning science and preservation.
