The IBGE launched, last Monday (29) the National Conference of Data Producers and Users – National Sovereignty in Geosciences, Statistics and Data: risks and opportunities for Brazil in the digital era at an event at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), located in the neighborhood of Maracanã, in the northern part of the capital, and broadcast online Digital IBGE and the Institute’s social media channels.

The Conference will gather producers and users of data between July 29 and August 2 at UERJ, Maracanã Campus (Rua São Francisco Xavier, 524), in Rio de Janeiro. This event is part of the time series of CONFEST (National Statistical Conference) and CONFEGE (National Geographic Conference) and has the objective of discussing the risks and opportunities observed in the new Digital Era, and of promoting the consolidation of the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED). Registration for online or onsite attendance, on the IBGE website, starts on May 13.

The release at UERJ also consolidated the event logo, with Brazil in the center of the world debate on Digital Era, as the latest edition of the IBGE’s Geographic School Atlas.

In his speech, Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE, highlighted the importance of the conference for the Brazilian Society. “This event reinforces the role played by the IBGE in the statistical reconstruction of Brazil, in a process that will be assessed by the National Congress and by the Brazilian society in its entirety, represented by universities, research institutes and the ministries. Ad there is nothing better than having this conference at UERJ, in a partnership with one of the main universities in the country. The constitution of SINGED will enable society to produce better data for decision making. Data today are as important as petroleum was in the past because that is how a country can present itself to the world as a sovereign territory. ”

Marcio Pochmann added that, “The Digital Era has the accumulation of data by means of our social media as its business model, for the access of to social media takes place by means of publicity policies of major companies, called big techs. Due to this reality, the IBGE has fostered a debate with the Brazilian regarding the necessary reorganization of statistics and data since the Institute was once the main coordinator of data in Brazil.”

Gulnar Azevedo e Silva, provost of the Rio de Janeiro State University, called attention to the partnership with the IBGE and the importance of this connection with the academic environment. “I see Brazil is experiencing a difficult moment, but also a moment to improve our data so that they can be directly used in the development of public policies. The role of universities, together with the IBGE, is to change this reality and make our data objective and reliable. It is necessary to reconstruct Brazil, but on a solid basis. And that is what the IBGE has been doing over the years.”
