Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate is 12.7% in the quarter ended in May

The unemployment rate (12.7%) in the moving quarter from March to May 2018 was stable in relation to the quarter of December 2017 to February 2018 (12.6%). In the comparison with the same moving quarter of the previous year, March to May 2017 (13,3%), there was a decrease of 0.6 percentage points.

The unemployed population (13.2 million) sttod stable in relation to the previous quarter (13.1 million). in the comparison with the same quarter a year ago, when there were 13.8 million unemployed, threre was decrease of 3.9%.

The employed population (90.9 million) in the quarter from March to May 2018 stood stable in relation to the quarter of Deember 2017 to February 2018. In relation to the same quarter a year ago, when there were 89.7 million employed persons, there was increase of 1.3%.

As a result, the employment-population ratio (53.6%) decreased -0.2 percentage points over the previous quarter (53.9%).

The number of persons employed with a formal contract (32.8 million) fell 1.1% against the previous quarter (December 2017 to February 2018). In the comparison with the quarter from March to May 2017, the drop was of -1.5% (less 483 thousand persons).

The number of employed persons without a formal contract (11.1 million persons) increased 2.9% over the previous quarter. In relation to the same quarter of 2017, it grew 5.7% (+ 597 thousand persons).

The category of self-employed workers (22.9 million persons) remained stable when compared with the quarter between December 2017 and February 2018. In relation to the same period a year ago, there was a high of 2.5% (+ 568 thousand persons).

The average usual earnings (R$2,187) in the quarter from March to May 2018 remained stable against the previous quarter and also in relation to the same quarter last year.

The unemployment rate was estimated at 12.7% in the moving quarter of the months from March to May 2018, recording stability in relation to the quarter of December 2017 to February 2018 (12.6%. It dropped (-0.6 percentage points) in relation to the same moving quarter last year, from March to May 2017, when the rate was estimated at 13.3%.

In the quarter from March to May 2018, there was nearly 13.2 million unemployed persons in Brazil.  This number presented stability over the quarter of December 2017 to February 2018, when unemployment was estimated at 13.1 million persons. Compared with the same quarter last year, when there were 13.8 million unemployed persons, this estimate changed -3.9%, representing a reduction of 536 thousand unemployed persons in the workforce.

The employed persons was estimated at 90.9 million in the quarter of March to May 2018. This estimate presented stability in relation o the previous quarter (December 2017 to February 2018). In relation to the quarter from March to May 2017, there was increase of 1.3%.

The employment-population ratio (percentage of employed persons in the working age population) was estimated at 53.6% in the quarter of March to May 2018, registering a drop of -0.2 percentage points against the quarter of December 2017 to February 2018, 53.9%. In relation to the same quarter of 2017, there was stability.

In the workforce, (employed and unemployed persons) in the quarter of March to May 2018, the estimate was of 104.1 million persons. This population remained stable when compared with the quarter between December 2017 and February 2018. Over the same quarter a year ago, there was expansion of 0.6% (increase of 663 million persons).

The number of persons out of the workforce was estimated at nearly 65.4 million in the quarter of March to May 2018. This population grew 475 thousand persons (0.7%) when compared with the quarter between December 2017 and February 2018. Over the same quarter a year ago, there was expansion of 1.6% (increase of 1.0 million persons).

Estimated at 32.8 million persons, the contingent of persons employed in the private sector with a formal contract (excluding domestic workers) dropped 1.1% (351 thousand less persons) against the previous quarter (December 2017 - February 2018). In relation to the quarter from March to May 2017, there was a change of -1.5% (-483 thousand persons).

In the period from March to May 2018, the category of the employed workers in the private sector without a formal contract (11.1 million persons) recorded a rise in relation to the previous quarter (2.9%), representing an increment of 307 thousand persons. It rose (5.7%) in relation to the same quarter a year ago, representing an increase estimated at 597 thousand persons.

The category of the self-employed workers, made of 22.9 million persons, recorded stability in the comparison with the previous quarter (December 2017 to February 2018). This indicator also increased (2.5%) over the same period last year, representing an additional estimated at 568 thousand persons in this quarter.

The number of employers (4.3 million persons) remained stable in relation to the previous quarter. It rose (5.6%) in relation to the same quarter a year ago, representing an increase estimated at 229 thousand more persons.

The category of domestic workers (6.1 million persons) decreased when compared with the quarter between December 2017 and February 2018. Over the quarter of March to May 2017, there was stability.

Estimated at 11.5 million persons, the group of persons employed in the public sector (including statutory servants and military) increased against the previous quarter. It rose (2.9%) in relation to the same quarter a year ago, representing an increase estimated at 319 thousand more persons.

According to the groups of activity, the category of Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services increased (2.7%, or 423 thousand more persons) in relation to the quarter of December 2017 to February 2018. The following groups recorded a reduction: Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (1.5% or 265 thousand less persons), Information, Communication and Financial, Real Estate, Professional and Administrative Activities (2.1% or 209 thousand less persons) and Domestic services (3.0% or 188 thousand less persons).

In relation to the quarter from March to May 2017, there were increases in: Public administration, defense, social security (3.4%, or 526 thousand more persons) and Other services (7.4%, or 323 thousand more persons). Agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing and aquiculture reduced by 2.9% (254 thousand less persons).

The average usual real earnings from all jobs of the employed persons was estimated at R$2,187 in the quarter of March to May 2018, remaining stable against the December 2017-February 2018 quarter.

The analysis of the average usual real earnings from the main job of the moving quarter from March to May 2018 in relation to the December 2017-February 2018 quarter, according to the groups of activity, pointed out that all the groups remained stable. The category of Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services increased (3.8%, or + R$119) in relation to the quarter of March to May 2017. The other groups did not show any significant changes.

The real wage bill usually earned in all jobs by employed persons was estimated at R$193.9 billion in the moving quarter from March to May 2018 and remained stable when compared with the moving quarter between December 2017 and February 2018. It also remained stable against the same quarter last year.
