The Annual Survey of Industry - Enterprise (PIA-Enterprise) 2016 shows a scenario of economic retraction, reflected in several indicators: since 2015, the number of active industrial Enterprises dropped from 323.3 thousand to 321.2 thousand, while investments in the sector fell from R$192.3 to R$185.9 billion. In the same period, there was a decrease of 400,836 in the number of persons employed in industry. In relation to 2013, the fall was of 1.3 million employed persons.

The naval industry was one of the main sectors affected by the downturn: between 2014 and 2016, personnel employed in shipbuilding fell from 61,543 to 31,505, a decline of 49% in the period. In Rio de Janeiro, there was a fall of 74.2% in the employment rate in this sector, which is equivalent to 23,179 less employed persons.

In 2016, PIA-Enterprise showed that there were 321.2 thousand active enterprises, with a total revenue of R $ 3.2 trillion and expenses of R $ 291.7 billion in salaries, withdrawals and other compensation, paid at 7.7 millions of people employed. Investments (current values ​​of third-party acquisitions and own production in fixed assets and improvements) in industry fell from R $ 192.3 billion in 2015 to R $ 185.9 billion.

In relation to 2015, there are variations in the number of persons employed in the following sectors: Manufacture of non-metallic mineral products (-56.5 thousand persons employed), Manufacture of coke, of petroleum products and of biofuels ( -35.6 thousand persons employed) and Manufacture of furniture (-34 thousand employed persons).

The five activities with the largest participation in the industry revenue in 2016 were: Manufacture of food products (23.2%); Manufacture of coke, petroleum products and of biofuels (10.4%); Manufacture of chemical products (10.1%); Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (7.8%); and Basic Metals (5.8%).

Industry lost 1.3 million employed persons since 2013

Between 2007 and 2016, the evolution of the industry's employed personnel showed growth until 2013, then retreating. At the highest point in the series, the industry had 9.0 million employed persons. In 2016, this contingent fell to 7.7 million, a drop of 14.3% in the period, or 1.3 million less employed persons.

Number of employed persons in shipbuilding fell 49% between 2014 and 2016

The shipbuilding industry was one of the sectors most affected by the economic downturn in the country between 2014 and 2016. During this period, the shipbuilding sector had a reduction of 30,038 employed persons, 23,179 of them in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In real terms, the gross industrial production of this activity fell 49.1% in the period, from R $ 17.1 billion in 2014 to R $ 8.7 billion in 2016. There was also a fall in the value of industrial transformation, from R$7.5 to R$4.4 billion. In the same period, the number of local units of the sector fell from 290 to 256 at the national level. In Rio de Janeiro, this reduction was from 55 to 39 local units.

In 2016, food industry led in revenue and employed personnel

In addition to having the largest share of total industry revenue, Food manufacturing is the industrial activity that most provided employment opportunities in 2016, totaling 22.0% (1.7 million) of the industry's employed personnel. The Manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories was the activity with the largest participation in the number of enterprises, with 15.6% (49.9 thousand enterpirses), although it accounts for only 1.6% of total revenue.

By deducting sales taxes from total gross revenue, the total net sales from industrial enterprises is achieved, which reached R$2.8 trillion in 2016, led by the performance of enterprises with 500 or more employed persons, with the largest participation (66.5%) in the total of the Brazilian industry.

The total costs and expenses of industrial enterprises in 2016 was R$3.1 trillion. Expenditure on raw material consumption accounted for 38.4%, standing out as the largest percentage in the structure of costs and expenses in the year.

Personnel expenses reached 14.1%, up 1.4 percentage points over 2015 (12.7%). The cost of resold goods (6.5%) and fuel consumption and the purchase of electricity (2.5%) remained stable in relation to the previous year. The relative share of payments for services rendered by third-parties and several articles bought for maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment increased to 3.3% in 2016 (3.0% in 2015).

In the other items, which together accounted for 35.3% of the total, expenses with depreciation, amortization and depletion of fixed assets stood at 4.3%; advertising expenses accounted for 0.9%; the expenses destined to the payment of royalties and technical assistance, for 0.3%; and other costs and expenses, for 29.8%.
