First quarterly results of livestock output: slaughter of cattle and of hogs and pigs increases from Q1 2017 to Q1 2018

Cattle slaughter recorded an increase of 1.4%, and the slaughter of hogs and pigs, of 0.5%. Chicken slaughter fell by 2.0% in Q1 2018 against Q1 2017. In the comparison bbetween Q1 2018 and Q4 2017, the slaughter of cattle and of hogs and pigs fell by 6.% and 4.7%, respectively, wheras chicken slaughter increased 2.6%, amounting to 1.47 million head. Milk acquisition hit 6.10 billion liters, the best result for a Q1 since 2016, with a hike of 4.1% in relation to Q1 2017 and a decrease of 6.9% against the previous quarter. The production of rawhide pieces increased 1.4% against that in Q1 2017, and fell 3.3% against that in the immediately previous quarter. The output of eggs increased 5.2% versus that in Q1 2017, and amounted to 831.31 million dozens, a decrease of 2.6% against the previous quarter. That is a record amount for a Q1, only reached in 1987. The publication with the first results of the quarterly surveys of livestock production can be accessed on this page.
From today on, the IBGE will release the first results of quarterly surveys of livestock, enabling a fatser access to information of the agricultural structure. These are preliminary results and only fro Brazil, without disaggregation by Federation Unit. The first results will be available about one month before the final release, and may be changed in the following releases.
Slaughter of cattle rises 1.4% in Q1 2018 against Q1 2017
In Q1, 7.50 million cattle head under some type of sanitary inspection were slaughtered. That amount was 6.9% smaller than that registered in the previous quarter and 1.4% bigger than in Q1 2017.
The production of 1.83 million metric tons of carcasses in Q1 2018 fell by 10.0% in relation to Q4 2017 and rose 1.8% against Q1 2017.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs amounts to 10.53 million head
In Q1 2018, a total 10.53 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, which mean a decrease of 4.7% against the previous quarter and and of 0.5% against the same period in 2017.
The cumulative weight of the carcasses reached 938.96 thousand metric tons, in Q1 2018, representing a decrease of 4.7% against the previous quarter and of 4.3% against the same period in 2017.
Slaughter of chickens fell 2.0% in Q1 2018 agains Q1 2017
In the first quarter of 2018, a total 1.47 billion chickens were slaughtered. That result meant an increase of 2.6% against the previous quarter and decrease of 2.0% against the same period in 2017.
The cumulative weight of the carcasses was 3.47 million metric tond in Q1 2018. That result represented increeases of 3.5% in relation to the previous quarter and of 1.7% against the same period in 2017.
Purchase of milk recordes record increase in a Q1
The purchase of raw milk by establishments under some type of sanitary inspection (at federal, state or municipal level) in Q1 2018 was 6.10 billion liters, the best result for a Q1 since 2016. Despite the decrease of 6.9% in relation to the previous quarter, the figure was 4.1%, above that in the same quarter of 2017.

Purchase of leather was 1.4% bigger than in the same quarter a year ago
The tanneries surveyed by the Quarterly Suvey of Leather – those accounting for the tanning of at least 5 thousand rawhide pieces per year – reported having received 8.46 million whole units in Q1 2018. That amount was 3.3% smaller than in the previous quarter anf 1.4% bigger than in Q1 2017.
Production of eggs reaches 831.31 million and is a record for a Q1
The output of hen's eggs was 831.31 million dozens in Q1 2018. In the time series that started in 1987, that was the biggest output ever recorded in a Q1. The result was 2.6% smaller than in the previous quarter and 5.2% above the figure registered in Q1 2017.
