In 2017, slaughter of cattle, pigs and hogs grows, while chicken slaughter shrinks

After three years of decrease, cattle slaughter grew 3.8% in 2017, reaching 30.83 million head. Slaughter of hogs and pigs grew 2.0%, reaching 43.19 million head, a record in the time series initiated in 1997. Chicken slaughter, after four years of highs, dropped 0.3% over 2016, totaling 5.84 billion chicken head.

The acquisition of milk rose 4.1% in relation to 2016 and reached 24.12 billion liters. Leather acquisition grew 1.3%, in the period, and the production of hen eggs increased 6.7%, totaling 3.30 billion dozens, a record of the time series started in 1987. Cattle slaughter grows 3.8%, after three years of decrease

In 2017, 30.83 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered, accounting for an increase of 3.8% (+1,13 million head) in relation to the 2016.  It was the first annual growth after three years of consecutive falls in this comparison.

Slaughter grew in 16 of the 27 Federation Units Among those with a participation above 1.0%, there were rises in: Goiás (+355.50 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+297.03 thousand head), Mato Grosso (+227.15 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+144.61 thousand head), Paraná (+85.65 thousand head), Rondônia (+68.36 thousand head), Bahia (+34.92 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+31.34 thousand head) and Santa Catarina (+23.95 thousand head). The reductions were in Pará (-86.95 thousand head), Tocantins (-42.46 thousand head), Maranhão (-38.23 thousand head) and Acre (-25.67 thousand head).

Mato Grosso still leads the FU ranking of cattle slaughter in 2017, with 15.6% of the national contribution, followed by its two neighbors from the Central-West: Mato Grosso do Sul (11.1%) and Goiás (10.3%).

In the  4th quarter of 2017, 8.02 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered.  That volume was 0.4% bigger than the one recorded in the previous quarter and 8.3% higher than the one of the 4th quarter of 2016.

Slaughter of hogs and pigs grows 2.0% and hits new record in 2017

In 2017, 43.19 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, accounting for an increase of 2.0% (+865.59 thousand head) in relation to 2016. The annual series showed a continuous increase of this activity, culminating in the new record level in 2017.

Slaughter grew in 12 of the 25 Federation Units taking part in the survey. Among those with a contribution above 1.0%, there were increases in: Santa Catarina (+772.49 thousand head), Paraná (+322.56 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+128.18 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+100.06 thousand head) and Mato Grosso (+75.78 thousand head). Conversely, there were drops in: Rio Grande do Sul (-334.55 thousand head), São Paulo (-81.87 thousand head) and Goiás (-69.77 thousand head).

Santa Catarina kept leading the slaughter of hogs and pigs in 2017, with 26.6% of the national participation, followed by Paraná (21,3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (18,6%).

In the 4th quarter of 2017, there was a record slaughter of 11.05 million head of hogs and pigs, representing an increase of 0.2% in relation to the previous quarter and of 2.2% over the same period in 2016. The survey started in 1997.

Chicken slaughter falls 0.3% in 2017, after four years of growth in a row

In  2017, 5.84 billion head of chicken were slaughtered, with decrease of 0.3% (-18.54 million head) over 2016, interrupting the series of four consecutive years of growth in the slaughter of chicken.

The South region accounted for 60.8% of the national slaughter of chicken in 2017, followed by the Southeast (19.9%), Central-West (13.9%), Northeast (3.8%) and North (1.6%). 

The slaughter of 18.54 million less chicken head in 2017, in relation to the previous year, was determined by drops in the slaughter in 9 of the 24 Federation Units analyzed in the survey. Among those with a contribution above 1.0%, there were decreases in: Mato Grosso (-40.23 million head), Minas Gerais (-39.78 million head), Federal District (-13.72 million head) and Santa Catarina (-11.07 million head).

The rises were in: São Paulo (+26.05 million head), Goiás (+20.20 million head), Rio Grande do Sul (+15.42 million head), Bahia (+9.62 million head), Paraná (+9.51 million head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+6.34 million head).

Paraná still leads the FU chicken slaughter rank in Brazil in 2017, with 31.5% of national participation, followed by Santa Catarina (14.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (14.5%).

In the 4th quarter of 2017, 1.43 billion chicken head were slaughtered This figure represented a 3.7% drop over the last quarter and an increase of 1.1% in the comparison with the same period in 2016.

Milk acquisition grows 4.1% after two years of decrease

In 2017, dairy products under sanitary inspection collected 24.12 billion liters, representing an increase of 4.1% in relation to the previous year. It is a recovery after two years in a row of decrease in the annual time series of milk acquisition.

The acquisition of 947.29 million more liters of milk at the national level, in the 2017/2016 comparison, resulted from the increase in the volume collected in 18 of the 26 Federation Units taking part in the survey. The sharpest increases were in São Paulo (+313.05 million liters), Santa Catarina (+319.16 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (+169,40 million liters) and Goiás (+151.95 million liters), whereas the most significant drop occurred in Minas Gerais (-116.07 million liters). Despite the decrease, Minas Gerais kept its wide leadership in the ranking of the FUs, with 24.8% of the national participation, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (14.8%) and São Paulo (11.9%).

In the 4th quarter of 2017, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection was of 6.44 billion liters, the best result for a 4th quarter since 2014. In relation to the previous quarter, this volume represented a rise of 4.2% and was also 3.2% higher than the volume reached in the 4th of 2016.

Leather acquisition grows 1.3% in the annual comparison

In 2017, the tanning houses investigated in the Quarterly Survey of Leather - those that carry out the tanning of at least 5,000 whole pieces of raw hide per year - reported to have received 34.06 million of whole cattle raw hides. This quantity was 1.3% higher than the one registered in the previous year. As to the origin, the greatest part of leather came from slaughter houses and cold stores, followed by the rendering of services, accounting together for 89.0% of the total pieces received by the tanneries in 2017.

The increase of 444.88 thousand whole raw hides, at the national level, in the 2017/2016 comparison resulted from the cattle hides received in 8 of the 21 Federation Units that have at least one active tannery that fit in the survey universe. Th mains increases recorded were in the states of São Paulo (+648.81 thousand pieces), Goiás (+436.20 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (+318.61 thousand pieces), Pará (+305.99 thousand pieces) and Paraná (+273.95 thousand pieces).

 Conversely the greatest decrease occurred in Tocantins (-772.17 thousand pieces) and the second biggest in Maranhão (-202.92 thousand pieces). In the FU ranking, Mato Grosso led in 2017, just as the previous years, the cumulative reception of hides by the tanneries, with 17.1% of national participation, followed by São Paulo (12.6%), which surpassed Mato Grosso do Sul (12.4%).

In the 4th quarter of 2017, the investigated tanning houses in the Quarterly Survey of Leather - those that carry out the tanning of at least 5,000 whole pieces of raw hide per year - declared to have received 8.75 million of whole cattle raw hides. That volume was 0.1% bigger than the one recorded in the previous quarter and 6.0% higher than the one of the 4th quarter of 2016.

Egg production hits record in 2017 and reaches 3.30 billion dozens

The production of hen eggs was of 3.30 billion dozens in 2017, representing a rise of 6.7% in relation to the previous year. The annual series showed a continuous increase of this activity, culminating in a new record level in 2017.

 The production of hen eggs was higher in all months of 2017, if compared to the months of 2016. The greatest comparative increase was of 8.3% or 21.52 million dozens, between July 2016 and July 2017 - while the least significant increases were in the months of February:  2.4% or 5.90 million dozens

The production of 206.48 million more dozen eggs, at the national level, in the 2017/2016 comparison, was a consequence of the increase in the production of 20 of the 26 FU with eligible chicken farms. The sharpest increases occurred in São Paulo (+66.71 million dozens), Espírito Santo (+25.22 million dozens), Rio Grande do Sul (+19.32 million dozens), Pernambuco (+16.17 million dozens), Santa Catarina (+14.71 million dozens) and Minas Gerais (+14.53 million dozens). In the Fu whose production shrank, even the sharpest reduction dis not trespass 500 dozens.

São Paulo keeps leading by a wide margin the FU ranking of hen egg production, with 29.7% of the national production, followed by Minas Gerais (9.6%) and Paraná (8.8%).

The production of hen eggs was of 851.41 million dozens in the 4th quarter of 2017. Considering the time series started in 1987, this was the highest reduction ever. This figure was 1.0% bigger than that of the previous quarter and 6.4% bigger than that of the same period in 2016.
