Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate is 12.4% in quarter ending in September

The unemployment rate (12.4%) retreated 0.6 percentage points in the July-August-September 2017 quarter in relation to the April-May-June quarter (13.0%). The rate increased 0.6 percentage points over the same quarter in 2016, when it was 11.8%.

The unemployed population (13.0 million) dropped 3.9% (less 524 thousand persons) in relation to the previous quarter. It rose 7.8% (more 939 thousand persons) compared with the same quarter in 2016, when 12.0 million persons were unemployed.
The employed population (91.3 million) increased 1.2% over the previous quarter (more 1.1 million persons). It rose 1.6% (more 1.5 million persons) in relation to the same quarter a year ago (89.8 million employed persons).
The number of workers with a formal contract (33.3 million) remained stable against the previous quarter (April-May-June 2017). It dropped 2.4% (less 810 thousand persons) compared with the July-August-September 2016 quarter.
The category of the self-employed workers (22.9 million persons) grew 1.8% in relation to the April-May-June quarter (more 402 thousand persons). It rose 4.8% (more 1.1 million persons) over the same period in 2016.
The average usual real earnings (R$2,115) in the July-August-September 2017 quarter remained stable against the previous quarter (R$2,108) and also in relation to the same quarter in 2016 (R$2,065).
The usual real wage bill (R$188.1 billion) in the quarter ended in September 2017 rose 1.4% (more R$2.7 billion) in relation to the April-May-June quarter. It increased 3.9% (R$7.0 billion) over the same quarter in 2016. Access the complete information on the survey here.
The unemployment rate was estimated at 12.4%, in the moving quarter of July to September 2017, recording a reduction of 0.6 percentage points in relation to the quarter of April to June 2017 (13.0%). The comparison with the same moving quarter a year ago (July to September 2016), when the rate was estimated at 11.8%, showed an increase (0.6 percentage points).
About 13.0 million persons were unemployed in Brazil in the quarter between July and September 2017. This contingent dropped 3.9%, i. e., less 524 thousand persons, against the quarter from April to June 2017, when the unemployment was estimated at 13.5 million persons. Compared with the same quarter last year, when there were 12.0 million unemployed persons, this estimate rose 7.8%, resulting in an increase of 939 thousand unemployed persons in the workforce.
The number of employed persons was estimated at nearly 91.3 million in the quarter of July to September 2017. This estimate showed an increase of 1.2% over the previous quarter (April to June 2017), i.e., more 1.1 million persons. This indicator also posted a positive change (1.6%) in relation to the same quarter last year (July to September 2016), when 89.8 million persons were employed in Brazil.
The employment-population ratio – percentage of employed persons at working age – was estimated at 54.1% in the July-September 2017 quarter, a rise of 0.4 percentage points over the April-June 2017 quarter (53.7%). No statistically-significant change was registered in relation to the same quarter in 2016.
The contingent in the workforce – employed and unemployed persons – in the quarter of July to September 2017, was estimated at 104.3 million persons. This population registered a rise of 0.5% (more 536 thousand persons), when compared to the quarter of April to June 2017. An expansion of 2.4% (more 2.4 million persons) was recorded against the same quarter a year ago.
The contingent out of the workforce was estimated at 64.5 million persons in the July-September 2017 quarter. This population registered stability when compared to both comparison quarters.
Estimated at 33.3 million persons, the contingent of persons employed in the private sector with a formal contract (excluding domestic workers) remained stable against the previous quarter (April to June 2017). It dropped 2.4% (less 810 thousand persons) against the Jul-September 2016 quarter.
In the period from July to September 2017, the category of those employed in the private sector without a formal contract (10.9 million persons) recorded a rise in relation to the previous quarter (2.7%), representing an increment of 288 thousand persons. It posted an increase of 6.2% over the same quarter a year ago, an additional estimated at 641 thousand persons.
The category of self-employed workers, formed by 22.9 million persons, recorded an increase of 1.8% in the comparison with the previous quarter (April to June 2017), meaning an additional 402 thousand persons in this contingent. In relation to the same period a year ago, this indicator also recorded a positive change of 4.8%, representing the increase of 1.1 million persons.
The number of employers remained at 4.2 million persons, holding steady over the immediately previous quarter and over the same period last year. The category of the domestic workers, estimated at 6.2 million persons, kept statistically stable in both comparative quarters.
Theworkers employed in the public sector (including statutory servants and the military), estimated at 11.5 million persons, grew 1.7% (191 thousand persons) against the previous quarter (April to June 2017). No statistically-significant change was registered in the comparison with the quarter from July to September 2016.
The analysis of the contingent of employed persons, according to the groups of activity of the moving quarter from July to September 2017, in relation to the April-June 2017 quarter, pointed out to an increase in the following categories: Housing and food (3.4% or more 175 thousand persons), Information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities (2.4% or more 241 thousand persons), Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (1.6% or more 249 thousand persons). In the other groups there were not statistically significant changes.
The comparison with the July-September 2016 quarter showed a reduction in the contingent of the following groups: Agriculture, livestock, forestry, phishing and aquiculture (-4.4% or less 400 thousand persons) and Construction (-3.8% or less 268 thousand persons). The following groups increased: Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (2.4% or more 410 thousand persons), Housing and food (12% or more 562 thousand persons), Information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities (5.1% or more 488 thousand persons) and Other services (5.0% or more 214 thousand persons). The other groups did not report any statistically-significant change.
The average usual real earnings from all jobs of employed persons was estimated at R$2,115 in the July-September 2017 quarter, remaining stable against the April-June 2017 quarter (R$2,108) and in relation to the same quarter a year ago (R$2,065). This happened in every employment type.
In the comparison with the April-June 2017 quarter, the average usual real earnings did not register any statistically-significant change in the activity groups. The activity group of Agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing and aquaculture recorded an average income increase of 7.8% over the July-September 2016 quarter, whereas the other groups did not report any statistically-significant change.
The usual real wage bill from all jobs earned by employed persons was estimated at R$188.1 billion in the moving quarter between July and September 2017, and changed 1.4% (more R$2.7 billion) when compared with the moving quarter between April and June 2017. It also increased (3.9%) against the same quarter last year, which represented an increase of R$7.0 billion in the wage bill.
