In August, unemployment rate was 7.6%

The unemployment rate of August 2015 was estimated at 7.6% for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed, being stable in comparison with the July figure (7.5 %). Versus August 2014, this month presented an increase of 2.6 percentage points (having changed from 50 % to 7.6 %). The unemployed population (1.9 million persons) did not record change versus the July result. In comparison with August 2014, there was increase (52.1%, or 636 Thousand persons more). The employed population was estimated at 22.7 million for the group of six metropolitan areas, reflecting stability in the monthly analysis and decrease of 1.8% (minus 415 Thousand persons) in comparison with August 2014. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.3 million) was stable in the monthly comparison. In relation to August 2014, it fell by 3.8 % (minus 445 thousand persons). The average usual real earnings of the employed population was estimated at R$ 2,185.50. This result was 0.5% bigger than the one in July (R$ 2,174.49) and 3.5 % below that obtained in August 2014 (R$ 2,264.62). The average usual real wage bill of the employed population was estimated at R$ 50.2 billion in August 2015, recording stability, in relation to July, and decline of 5.4%, in the annual comparison. The actual real wage bill of the employed population (R$ 50.3 billion), estimated in July 2015, was stable versus that of June and fell by 5.4% versus that of July 2014. The Monthly Employment Survey (PME) is carried out in six metropolitan areas (Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre). In regional terms, the monthly analysis showed that the unemployment rate in Rio de Janeiro, against the July figure, recorded a significant reduction (from 5.7% to 5.1 %) and remained stable in the other areas. However, versus August 2014, significant changes were registered in all the areas. Salvador, from 9.3% to 12.4% (+3.1 p.p.); São Paulo from 5.1% to 8.1% (+3.0 pp); Recife, from 7.1% to 9.8% (+2.7 p.p.); Belo Horizonte, from 4.2% to 6.7% (+2.5 pp); Rio de Janeiro, from 3.0% to 5.1% (+2.1 p.p.) and in Porto Alegre, from 4.8% to 6.0% (+1.2 p.p.).

The number of unemployed persons was estimated at 1.9 million persons in all the six areas surveyed, remaining unchanged against that of July. In comparison with August in the previous year, there was an increase of 52.1% (over 636 thousand people in search of a job). In the analysis by area, the number of unemployed persons, in relation to that of last July, fell 11.3%, in Rio de Janeiro, and remained stable in the other areas surveyed. Versus August last year, unemployment increased in all the areas, with the highest increase in Rio de Janeiro (71.6%) and the lowest, in Porto Alegre (24.0%).

The employment population ratio (proportion of employed persons in relation to the persons at working age) was estimated at 51.8% in August 2015, for the group of six metropolitan areas. In comparison with August 2014, there was a reduction by 1.5 percentage points. In regional terms, in the monthly comparison, there was stability in all the areas. Versus August in the previous year, there was a decline in five areas: Salvador (-4.1 p.p.); São Paulo and Porto Alegre (-1.7 p.p.); Recife (-1.5 p.p.); and Belo Horizonte (-1.4 p.p.). In Rio de Janeiro, the employment population ratio did not record any change.

In the monthly comparison, real wage bill increased 0.5% in August

The average usual real earnings of workers was estimated at R$ 2.185.50 for the group of six areas surveyed in August 2015. This result was 0.5% higher than in July (2.174.49) and 3.5% below that of August 2014 (R$ 2,264.62). In regional terms, in relation to last July, earnings rose in Rio de Janeiro (+4,0%); fell in Recife (-2.1%); Porto Alegre (-1.2%); São Paulo (-0.9%); Belo Horizonte (-0.4%) and remained stable in Salvador. Versus August 2014, earnings dropped in four areas: Belo Horizonte (-7.2%); São Paulo (-5.7%); Recife (-5.5%); Porto Alegre (-2.1%). In the metropolitan areas of Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, there was stability.

The average usual real wage bill of employed persons was estimated at 50.2 billion in August, and remained stable against that of July. In the annual comparison this estimate increased 5.4%.

In the classification by categories of employment type, there was a decline in average usual real earnings, in comparison with that of July 2015, among workers without a formal contract in the private sector (-6.2%) and military and civil servants (-1.6%). In relation to August 2014, the greatest reduction was between workers without a contract in the private sector (-12.6%).
