The IBGE releases today, May 30 of 2016, the Land Use and Land Cover Map of Maranhão, based on satellite images captured in 2013, with 25m and 30m of resolution, as well as on field survey and textual and statistical information. In digital and vector format, at 1:250,000 (1cm= 2,500m) scale, this map complements the information released in November 2015, at 1:1,000.000 (1cm= 10,000m) scale. Please, access the new map aqui.

This is another product of the Systematic Mapping of Land Use and Land Cover, implemented by the IBGE for each one of the Federation Units. The information contained in the map depicts the dynamics of land use and is fundamental to the planning and management of the territory. It is an important support instrument to assess the impacts on the natural resources, as it detects the transformation processes and also allows the assessment of socio-environmental conflicts.

Through this map, one can realize that livestock farming (mainly beef cattle) prevails in more than 42% of the state, at different intensity levels. In some areas, it is associated with wild crop harvesting and temporary crops, among other activities.

Also, there is an increase in the grain production in the center-south of the state (corresponding to 2,46% of the state), especially in the municipalities of Balsas, Tasso Fragoso and Fortaleza dos Nogueiras.

Wild crop harvesting still prevails in the areas of greater forest concentration in the state, which is the main national producer of babassu, Jaborandi and charcoal.
