Industrial output increases in 10 of 14 places surveyed in March

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the growing pace of the national industrial output between February and March 2016 was followed by ten out of the 14 places surveyed, highlighted by the sharpest advances registered in Amazonas (22.2%) and Bahia (8.1%). The Northeast Region (4.1%), Santa Catarina (3.8%), Paraná (2.8%), Ceará (2.6%), Rio de Janeiro (2.2%) and São Paulo (1.5%) also increased above the national average (1.4%), whereas Minas Gerais (0.9%) and Pernambuco (0.4%) were the other places with positive indexes in March 2016. On the other hand, Goiás (-4.3%) and Pará (-3.2%) recorded the most significant negative figures in March. The other negative rates were reported in Espírito Santo (-1.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.3%).

Still concerning the seasonally-adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the overall industry changed -0.3% in the quarter ending in March 2016 over the previous month and maintained the downward trend started in October 2014. In regional terms, still in relation to the marginal movement of this index, six places posted negative rates, highlighted by the steepest declines reported in Pernambuco (-1.4%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.7%), Goiás (-0.5%) and Espírito Santo (-0.5%). Conversely, Amazonas (5.0%), Pará (2.8%), Paraná (1.1%), Santa Catarina (1.0%) and Ceará (0.7%) registered the major advances in March 2016.

In the comparison with the same month in the previous year, the industrial sector reduced 11.4% in March 2016, showing negative figures in 13 out of the 15 places surveyed. In March, the sharpest retreats were recorded in Pernambuco (-24.4%) and Espírito Santo (-22.2%). Goiás (-14.3%) and São Paulo (-12.5%) also posted more significant negative figures than the national average (-11.4%), while Rio de Janeiro (-11.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-10.6%), Amazonas (-10.2%), Minas Gerais (-9.4%), Santa Catarina (-8.3%), Bahia (-7.2%), the Northeast Region (-7.0%), Paraná (-6.0%) and Ceará (-5.9%) were the other places that registered negative rates in March. On the other hand, Pará (7.3%) and Mato Grosso (4.0%) recorded the advances in March 2016.

In the cumulative indicator in the January-March 2016 period, against the same period last year, the reduced overall production reached 12 out of the 15 places surveyed, five of them declining more than the industry average (-11.7%): Pernambuco (-27.0%), Espírito Santo (-22.4%), Amazonas (-22.1%), São Paulo (-13.6%) and Minas Gerais (-13.2%). Goiás (-10.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-10.0%), Santa Catarina (-8.7%), Paraná (-8.7%), Ceará (-8.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-6.6%) and the Northeast Region (-4.4%) were the other places that posted negative figures at the end of the first quarter of the year. On the other hand, Pará (10.8%), Mato Grosso (6.6%) and Bahia (3.8%) registered advances in the cumulative index in the year.

As the overall industry declined 9.7% in March 2016, the annualized rate – cumulative indicator in the last 12 months – posted the most intense drop since October 2009 (-10.3%) and kept the downward trend started in March 2014 (2.1%). In regional terms, 13 out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates in March 2016 and 14 showed lower dynamism against the index of February. The main retreats between February and March were reported in Espírito Santo (from -2.6% to -5.8%), Pernambuco (from -10.1% to -12.1%), Goiás (from -0.9% to -2.4%) and São Paulo (from -12.0% to -12.8%), whereas Amazonas (from -18.7% to -18.0%) registered the only gain between the two periods.
