IPCA stays at 0.22% in August

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA)changed 0.22% in August and stood 0.40 percentage points (p.p.) below the level of 0.62% reported in July and 0.03 p.p. below the level of 0.25% in August 2014. This was the lowest index for August since 2010, when it registered 0.04%. As a result, the cumulative index in the year stayed at 7.06%, well above the index of 4.02% recorded in the same period of 2014. Concerning the cumulative rate between January and August, this was the highest rate since 2003 (7.22%). A number of items became cheaper between July and August, highlighted by airfare, whose drop of 24.90% contributed with -0.11 p.p. to the month´s result. The drop reached 40.20% in the metropolitan area of Belém, and more moderate figures in Goiânia (-15.12%) and Vitória (-15.79%). This item cumulatively dropped 14.64% in the last 12 months. Pressed by airfare, the group of transportation stayed at -0.27%, the lowest figure among the groups.

In the group of transportation, used cars (-1.03%), tires (-1.00%) and parts and pieces (-0.96%) also stood out. On the other hand, the prices of gasoline (0.67%),   ethanol (0.60%), urban bus fare (0.60%) and new cars (0.30%) increased. In the case of gasoline (0.67%), the pressure was mainly exerted by price increases in the areas of Campo Grande (6.44%), Goiânia (3.59%), Curitiba (2.98%), Salvador (1.99%) and Vitória (1.00%). Except for Vitória, whose drop was 1.71%, ethanol (0.60%) was influenced by the same areas: Goiânia (9.47%), Campo Grande (9.12%), Curitiba (3.67%) and Salvador (2.67%). The item urban bus fare was influenced only by the fares of the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, whose rise of 7.10% was due to the adjustment of 9.68%, in force since August 8.

An expressive part of the products surveyed in the group of food and beverages (-0.01%) became cheaper from July to August, highlighted by potatoes (-14.75%), tomatoes (-12.88%) and onions (-8.28%), which, altogether, contributed with -0.10 p.p. to the month's index.

 Considering the items that rose in August in the group of food, the highlights were cassava flour (4.40%) and garlic (2.74%).

For the first time since March 2014 in the group of housing (0.29%), when it stayed at -0.87%, electricity dropped (-0.42%). This item reflected the reduction of PIS/COFINS in the majority of the areas surveyed, despite the increase in the bills in Belém, whose change of 3.69% was due to the adjustment of 7.47% on August 7, and in Vitória, whose change of 1.62% was due to the adjustment of 2.52% also on August 7. In addition to electricity, bottled gas became cheaper in August (-0.44%), due to significant drops reported in the areas of Recife (-4.27%), Campo Grande (-2.69%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.12%) and Fortaleza (-0.99%).

Conversely, other items of the group of housing registered a rise, highlighted by water and sewage fees (1.07%), manpower for small repairs (0.84%), condominium fees (0.71%), cleaning products (0.49%) and residential rent (0.40%). The rise of 1.07% of water and sewage fees was influenced by the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, whose bills increased 9.29% due to the adjustment of 9.98% in force since August 1, and of Vitória, whose bills increased 7.37%, reflecting part of the adjustment of 10.69% in force since August 8.

Among the groups of products and services surveyed, education (0.82%) recorded the highest rate in August, reflecting the result of the data collection carried out in August in order to capture the reality of the second semester of the school year. Regular courses changed 0.78%, while other courses (computer, languages, etc.) recorded a high of 1.62%.

The rise of 0.75% of the group of personal expenses was mainly explained by the items banking services (2.65%), hairdresser (0.86%) and domestic workers (0.53%). The results of the other groups were: household articles (0.37%), wearing apparel (0.20%) and communication (0.14%).

Among the regional indexes, the highest rate was registered in Curitiba (0.47%), due to the rise of 3.02% in the prices of fuels. The liter of gasoline became 2.98% more expensive and the liter of ethanol, 3.67%. The lowest index was recorded in Brasília (-0.16%). Having dropped 23.40% and weighting 1.94%, airfares contributed with -0.45 p.p. to this month's result.

 

The IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source. It encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande and Brasília. In order to estimate the index of the month, the prices collected from July 30 to August 27, 2015 (reference) were compared with those in force from June 30 to July 29, 2015 (base).

INPC changes 0.25% in August

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) recorded a change of 0.25% in August and stood 0.33 p.p. below the result of 0.58% in July. As a result, the cumulative index of the year closed at 7.69%, well above the rate of 4.11% relative to the same period of 2014. Considering the last 12 months, the index was at 9.88%, slightly above the rate of 9.81% relative to the previous 12 months. In August 2014, the INPC was 0.18%.

Food products changed -0.04% in August, whereas the July´s rate was 0.56%. The group of non-food products changed 0.38% in August, well below the rate of 0.59% of July.

Among the regional indexes, the highest rate was registered in Curitiba (0.56%), due to the rise of 3.08% in the prices of fuels. The liter of gasoline became 2.98% more expensive and the liter of ethanol, 3.67%. The lowest index was recorded in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro (0.06%), where food dropped 0.53%.
