Services sector changes 1.3% in June over May

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector grew 1.3% in volume of services in June over May, after registering a rise of 0.5% in May (revised) and of 1.1% in April.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the sector fell 3.0% compared with June 2016, after recording drops of 1.9% in May and of 5.7% in April. Considering these figures, the cumulative rate in the year stayed at -4.1% and, in 12 months, at -4.7%.

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the segments of Services rendered to families and Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (1.0%, both), Professional, administrative and complementary services (0.8%) and Other services (0.7%) increased in relation to May 2017. The only retreat was recorded in the segments of Information and communication services (-0.2%). The special aggregate of Tourism activities rose 5.3% compared with May.

In the seasonally-adjusted series, nominal revenue changed 1.0% in June in relation to May and 3.2% when compared with the same month a year ago. The cumulative rate in the year stood at 1.6% and, in 12 months, at 0.6%.

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector posted a positive change of 0.3% in the second quarter of 2017 against the first quarter, interrupting a series of nine consecutive quarters with negative figures.

Concerning the biannual figures in the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector reported a decline of 1.3%, in volume, in the first semester of 2017 in relation to the second semester of 2016, representing the smallest retreat since the first semester of 2015.

In terms of the seasonally-unadjusted composition of the overall rate of volume, the positive contributions came from the segments of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.4 p.p.) and Services rendered to families (0.2 p.p.). The negative contributions were as follows: Professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.7 p.p.), Information and communication services (-1.2 p.p.) and Other services (-0.7 p.p.).

First positive quarterly change after nine consecutive quarters of negative results

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector posted a positive change of 0.3% in the second quarter of 2017 against the first quarter, interrupting a series of nine consecutive quarters with negative figures. The increase of Professional, administrative and complementary services (1.4%) and Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.7%) contributed to the positive result this quarter. The segments of Other services (-3.6%), Information and communication services (-1.6%) and Services rendered to families (-0.9%) retreated. The special aggregate of Tourism activities dropped 1.1%.

Compared with the second quarter of 2016, the services sector retracted 3.6%, the smallest retraction since the third quarter of 2015. Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (1.6%) and Services rendered to families (0.7%) increased. The biggest drop was reported by Other services (-10.6%), followed by Professional, administrative and complementary services (-7.8%) and Information and communication services (-2.8%). Tourism activities declined 5.4% in the same comparison basis.

First semester of 2017 changes -1.3% in relation to second semester 2016

Concerning the biannual figures in the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector reported a decline of 1.3%, in volume, in the first semester of 2017 in relation to the second semester of 2016, representing the smallest retreat since the first semester of 2015. The results of this semester highlighted the segment of Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing as the only one to rise (1.9%) and pointed out to the steepest drops in the segments of Other services and Professional, administrative and complementary services, with -7.4% and -7.0%, respectively. Both the segments of Services rendered to families and Information and communication services fell 0.2% and Tourism activities, 4.7%.    

Compared with the same semester last year, the services sector retreated 4.1%, the smallest decline since the second semester of 2015. Professional, administrative and complementary services registered the biggest drop (-8.6%).

Roraima, Mato Grosso and Amazonas, the biggest increases between May and June

Concerning the seasonally-adjusted regional figures of the services sector in June, the biggest positive changes, in volume, over May were recorded in Roraima (6.8%), Mato Grosso (6.1%) and Amazonas (5.4%). The biggest negative changes were reported in Rio Grande do Norte (-3.6%), Ceará (-2.2%) and Maranhão and Minas Gerais (both with -1.6%).

In the seasonally-unadjusted comparison with the same month last year, Mato Grosso (20.3%), Paraná (7.0%) and Amazonas (5.3%,) posted the biggest positive changes. The biggest negative changes were registered in the Federal District (-16.8%), Roraima (-16.3%) and Rondônia (-14.3%). 

Tourism activities: São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and Goiás, the biggest changes between May and June

The analysis of the seasonally-adjusted regional figures of volume of the Tourism activities, according to the selected Federation Units, showed that only the Federal District recorded a negative change (-0.5%). In order of change, the positive changes were as follows: São Paulo (4.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.9%), Goiás (3.2%), Espírito Santo (3.0%), Rio de Janeiro (2.7%), Pernambuco (2.5%), Bahia (2.3%), Santa Catarina (2.1%), Paraná (1.8%), Minas Gerais (1.3%) and Ceará (0.3%).

In the seasonally-unadjusted comparison with the same month last year, the positive changes were as follows: Goiás (15.0%), Pernambuco (7.9%), Santa Catarina (5.6%), Paraná (3.9%), Bahia (3.8%) and Minas Gerais (1.7%).  The negative changes were as follows: The Federal District (-22.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-19.8%), Espírito Santo and Rio Grande do Sul (both with -7.8%), São Paulo (-2.7%) and Ceará (-1,5%).
