The Geographical Indication Tag (GI) refers to the location of the origin and to the special conditions of the manufacturing of products, assuring the consumers that they are acquiring a product differentiated by the quality of its provenience, as well as valuing the local culture and fostering tourism activities.

Geographical Indications have already been established in Brazil, like wines and sparkling wines of the Vinhedos Valley, beef from the Pampa Gaúcho da Campanha Meridional and shrimp from the Costa Negra.

The Map of Geographical Indications of Brazil is the integration of the Geographical Indication areas - whose perimeters were defined by local productive arrangements (associations, unions and cooperatives) - and the Continuous Cartographic Base to the Millionth Scale, produced by the IBGE.

The Geographical Indication Tag is certified by the INPI and regulated by the Intellectual Property Act no. 9,279, of May 14, 1996. Two models may be assumed: Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) – article 177, and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) – article 178 (http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/leis/L9279.htm).
