Industrial employment: - 0.4% in November

In November 2014, total salaried employed persons in industry recorded negative change of 0.4% in comparison with the October result, in the seasonally-adjusted series. This is the eighth consecutive negative rate of industrial employment, with cumulative decrease of 4.3%. Given these results, the quarterly moving average fell by 0.5% in the quarter which ended in November 2014 versus the level reached in the previous month, and has remained on a downward trend since April 2013. In comparison with the November 2013 figure, industrial employment recorded a 4.7% decrease, its 38th consecutive negative result in this type of comparison and the most significant one since October 2009 (-5.4%). As a result, total salaried employed persons also recorded decrease in terms of the cumulative index in eleven months of the year (-3.1%). The cumulative rate in the last 12 months decreased 3.0% and has remained on a downward trend since September last year (-1.0%).

In comparison with the same month a year before, employment in industry fell 4.7% in November 2014, and the number of workers faced decreases in the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative impact on the overall average of industry was recorded by São Paulo (-6.1%). It is also worth mentioning the negative results of Minas Gerais (-4.5%), Northeast Region (-3.8%), Paraná (-4.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.4%) and North and Central West Region (-4.2%).
By sector, also in terms of the monthly index of November 2014, total salaried employed persons decreased in sixteen of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. The main highlights were the negative contributions from: food products and beverages (-4.0%), means of transportation (-7.7%), metal products (-8.3%), machinery and equipment (-6.6%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-8.2%), footwear and leather (-7.9%), apparel (-4.8%), other products from manufacturing industry (-6.5%) and basic metals (-5.8%). On the other hand, the main positive impacts on the average of industry came from the subsectors of chemicals (1.0%) and non-metallic minerals (0.1%).
In terms of the cumulative index of 11 months in 2014, industrial employment recorded decrease of 3.1%, with negative rates in 13 of the 14 areas and in 16 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. Among the areas, São Paulo (-4.3%) registered the main negative impact on the industry overall, being followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-4.3%), Paraná (-4.3%), Minas Gerais (-2.7%), Northeast Region (-1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.7%) and North and Central West Region (-1.4%). Pernambuco, with increase of 0.4%, accounted for the only positive contribution. In terms of subsectors, also considering the cumulative index in the year, the main negative contributions to the overall average came from metal products (-7.2%), machinery and equipment (-5.6%), means of transportation (-5.2%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-7.0%), footwear and leather (-8.0%), apparel (-3.4%), other products from manufacturing industry (-4.3%), textiles (-4.5%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-7.7%). On the contrary, impacts were recorded by chemicals (1.5%) and non-metallic minerals (0.8%).
Number of hours paid is 0.9% smaller in November
In November 2014, the number of hours paid to industry workers, in the seasonally adjusted series, fell by 0.9% in the comparison with the immediately previous month, the second consecutive negative rate, with cumulative decrease of 4.9%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index recorded change of 0.6% in the quarter which ended in November 2014 in comparison with the level reached in the previous month and has remained on an upward trend since May 2013.
In comparison with the November 2013 figure, the number of hours paid fell 5.5%, the 18th consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison and the most significant since September 2009 (-6.1%). The cumulative index of the first 11 months of the year decreased by 3.7% when compared to that of the previous year. The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last twelve months, having changed from -3.3% in October to -3.6% in November 2014, has remained on a downward trend as observed since September 2013 (-1.0%).
In November 2014, the number of hours paid declined 5.5% when compared with the figure in the previous month. There was widespread decrease, since all the 14 areas and the 18 subsectors surveyed recorded negative rates. In terms of subsector, the main negative influences came from food products and beverages (-4.8%), machinery and equipment (-8.4%), metal products (-9.4%), means of transportation (-7.1%), footwear and leather (-11.1%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-8.0%), apparel (-5.6%), other products from manufacturing industry (-7.4%) and basic metals (-7.6%). On the contrary, the subsectors of chemicals (0.2%) was the only one recording a positive figure in the month.
Among the areas, also in comparison with the same month a year ago, São Paulo (-7.3%) represented the main negative influence. It is also worth mentioning the negative results of Northeast Region (-5.4%), Minas Gerais (-5.2%), Paraná (-5.9%), North and Central West Region (-4.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-4.8%).
In the cumulative index of January-November 2014, there was decrease of 3.7% in the number of hours paid, with decrease in 16 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The most significant negative impacts were recorded by metal products (-8.3%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-8.9%), means of transportation (-6.0%), footwear and leather (-8.9%), apparel (-38%) and textiles (-5.2%). On the other hand, non-metallic minerals (1.0%) and chemicals (0.9%) accounted for the positive contributions to the number of hours paid to industry workers. At regional level, all the fourteen areas surveyed recorded negative rates, the main highlights being the decrease of 5.0% recorded by São Paulo, followed by losses observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-5.3%), Paraná (-5.2%), Minas Gerais (-3.4%) and Northeast Region (-2.9%).
Real payroll falls 2.6% in November
In November 2014, the real payroll of industry workers (seasonally-adjusted) recorded decrease of 2.6% versus that of the immediately previous month, eliminating the decrease of 1.1% observed last October. It is worth mentioning this month shows the negative influence of manufacturing industry (-2.2%) and of mining and quarrying industry (-3.7%). Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall recorded decrease of 1.0% in the quarter which ended in November 2014, compared to the level reached in the previous month and has interrupted the downward trend which had started last February.
In the comparison with November 2013, real payroll decreased by 5.6%, the sixth consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison. As a result, real payroll recorded decrease of 0.8% in the cumulative index of 11 months in the year. The annualized rate, the cumulative index of the last 12 months, having declined 1.0%, had the biggest negative figure since April 2010 (-1.1%) and has remained on a downward trend since last January (1.6%).
Versus the same month in the previous year, real payroll decreased by 3.7% in November 2013, with negative results in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main negative influence to the national overall was that of São Paulo (-7.9%). It is also worth mentioning the negative contributions from Northeast Region (-5.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.6%), Rio de Janeiro (5.0%), Paraná (-4.5%), Minas Gerais (-2.5%) and North and Central West Region (-2.6%).
By subsector, also regarding the monthly index of November 2014, real payroll in the country decreased in all the 18 subsectors surveyed, the main highlights being food products and beverages (-5.8%), machinery and equipment (-8.7%), means of transportation (-6.6%), metal products (-11.1%), communication equipment, apparatus and electronic material (-10.0%), rubber and plastic (-6.0%), apparel (-7.9%), mining and quarrying industry (-4.2%), footwear and leather (-8.9%), other products from manufacturing industry (-5.7%) and basic metals (-3.2%).
Considering the cumulative index of 11 months in 2014, real payroll decreased 1.70.8%, with positive rates in 11 of the 14 areas surveyed. The most relevant negative impact on the industry overall was that of São Paulo (-1.5%). It is also worth mentioning, to a lower extent, decreased from Rio Grande do Sul (-2.3%), Northeast Region (-1.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%) and Ceará (-2.3%). The main positive contribution was recorded by the North and Central West Regions (3.82.6%), followed by Santa Catarina (1.1%).
By sector, also in terms of the cumulative index, real payroll decreased in 11 of the 18 activities surveyed, affected by the decline in communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (6.2%), metal products (-5.3%), means of transportation (-1.9%) and machinery and equipment (-2.5%). On the other hand, the sectors of food products and beverages (1.9%), non-metallic minerals (3.7%) chemicals (1.2%) and rubber and plastic (1.2%) represented the main negative contributions to the cumulative index in eleven months of the year.
