20 of the 23 activities surveyed recorded prices rises

In November, 20 of the 23 activities surveyed recorded positive changes of price against those in October, versus 17 activities in the previous month. The four biggest changes were those of products belonging to the following activities: printing (-2.98%), tobacco (2.90%), pulp and paper (2.33%) and other tranportation equipment (2.26%). The most influential items were food products (0.29 percentage points), oil refining and ethanol products (0.20 percentage points), motor vehicles (0.12 percentage points) and basic metals (0.11 percentage points).

Among the activities recording the biggest percent changes in terms of cumulative results in the year (November/14 versus December 2013), the highlights were: basic metals (10.48%), beverages (8.92%), electrical machinery and apparatus (8.42%) and footwear and leather articles (7.96%). In this indicator, major contributions came from: basic metals (0.80 percentage points), motor vehicles (0.68 percentage points), oil refining and ethanol products (0.57 percentage points) and other chemicals (0.28 percentage points).

In the comparison between November 2014 and November 2013 (cumulative index in 12 months), the four biggest price changes occurred in footwear and leather articles (9.92%), other transportation equipment (9.25%), beverages (8.87%) and basic metals (8.71%). The main influences came from oil refining and alcohol production (0.89 percentage points), basic metals (0.68 percentage points), motor vehicles (0.65 percentage points) and other chemicals (0.54 percentage points).

Food products: In November 2014, the prices of the sector changed by 1.45% in comparison with those of October, the biggest result since September 2013 (1.55%). In the 15 months between September 2013 and November 2014, there were seven negative results and eight positive ones. With this result, the biggest influence on the manufacturing industry indicator(1.16%) came from the food products sector (0.29 percentage points). The cumulative index in the year reached 0.66%, the first positive result of the series in the year. A comparison between prices of November 2014 and those of November 2013, points to rise 0.97% in relation to one year before. Among the four products highlighted in terms of change and influence, three (fresh or chilled beef) frozen beef and sterilized milk / UHT / long life) are present in both lists. The fourth product, in terms of change, is ice creams, popsicles and frozen edible products, which, such as milk, recorded negative price change from October to November. In terms of influence, with positive impact (similarly to the listed types of meat), comes residue from soybean extraction. These four items accounted for 1.34 percentage points (out of 1.45%). Out of the products listed, fresh or chilled beef (positive) and residue from soybean extraction (negative) also appear in comparisons with December 2013 (cumulative in the year) and November 2013.

Oil refining and ethanol production the activity recorded a change of 1.80% in November 2014 in relation to October, reversing the negative result of the previous month. In the year, the sector presents cumulative figure of 5.11%, whereas the indicator of the previous twelve months records 8.19%. The main products in the monthly indicator were ethyl alcohol, asphalt, asphalt cement or other residue from petroleum or from bituminous minerals and other fuel oils, all of them with positive changes, and "aviation kerosene", with a negative figure. These products accounted for 1.74 percentage points out of a total 1.80% in the monthly indicator. In the year, both in terms of change and influence, diesel and other fuel oils and motor gasoline (in terms of influence only) are highlights with positive rates and, on with negative ones, ethyl alcohol (anhydrous or hydrated) and basic lubricants. In the last 12 months, the highlights in terms of change were the same in 12 months, except for ethyl alcohol (anhydrous or hydrated), which is a substitute for basic lubricants). The activity of oil refining and ethanol products accounted for the main influence on the result of the last 12 months, with 0.89 percentage points of the 4.56% change in the period.

Other chemicals versus that of October 2014, the fourth month with positive change, after five consecutive months with negative changes. The indicator relative to the last 12 months, after some deceleration in the last six months, including negative results in July and August, presented a positive change of 4.93%. Three of the four highlights in terms of price change had positive results: ammonia, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and non-saturated propene (propylene); on another extreme are phenol (hydroxybenzene) and related salts. In terms of influence, the four main products in the November/October comparison accounted for 0.42 percentage pints (half) of the 0.84% change in the month. They were: NPK fertilizers and non-saturated propene (propylene), with positive results, and phenol (hydroxy benzene) and related salts and herbicides for use in agriculture, with negative ones. In cumulative index in the year and in 12 month, the highlight, in terms of influence, non-saturated ethylene (ethene), versus the movement of the index, and NPK fertilizers and ammonium, with positive results. Also with the highlighted products in terms of influence are, onsidering, in the cumulative index, PEBD and, in the last twelve months, non-saturated propene (propylene).

Metalurgia: Basic metals: a comparison of prices of the sector in November 2014 with those of in the same year presents positive change of 1.32%. As a result, the sector had cumulative change of 10.48% in the year, the biggest positive change among all the activities of manufacturing industry and also of this indicator since the beginning of the series. Concerning this rate it is worth mentioning the big influence of the January 2014 result versus that of December 2013 (4.30%), the biggest change in the month-on-month comparison since the beginning of IPP. The comparison between November 2013 and November 2014 shows a result of 8.71%, also considering the significant change occurred in of January. The highlights in terms of price change, in the monthly comparison, were non-ferrous products from basic metals: copper bars, profiles and rebars and copper alloys and unwrought aluminum alloy, together with carbon steel hot-rolled coil, uncoated, and carbon steel ingots, blocks, rods or plates, affected mainly by the depreciation of real in relation to the dollar (4.1%) and the increased production costs. Together, these products represent 1.05 percentage points of the monthly change of 1.32%. In terms of influence, there are three products in common in all the analyses: carbon steel ingots, blocks, rods or plates, unwrought aluminum alloy, all of them representing positive contributions and depending on currency flows and/or energetic consumption for production. Global results of this sector are due to currency, at the reach of new markets, to the increase of production costs, and, in the case of non-ferrous metals, to international prices.

Motor vehicles:: The production of motor vehicles recorded, in November, a change of 1.03% in the monthly indicator, reaching 6.25% cumulative in the year. In relation to the last 12 months, the activity recorded 5.87%. With these results, the activity accounted for the main influence on the cumulative result of the year, and the third major one on the IPP monthly result. Among the main contributions to the monthly index, diesel vehicles with load capacity below 5 tonnes is the only product which presents a negative result, and is a highlight both in terms of influence and of change. The other products are gas, ethanol or biofuel passenger cars, "gearboxes for motor vehicles" and "tractor-trucks for trailers and semi-trailers", with positive results. Together, these products represent 0.91 percentage points of the November index. In terms of cumulative figures in the year, products were flex-fuel, gasoline or ethanol passenger car with any engine power output, engine parts for motor vehicles, "tractor-trucks for trailers and semi-trailers", and diesel trucks with load capacity above 5 tonnes, all of them with positive results. In relation to the last 12 months, also with positive results, can be mentioned: flex-fuel, gasoline or ethanol passenger car with any engine power output, engine parts for motor vehicles, diesel trucks with load capacity above 5 tonnes, and chassis with engine for buses or for trucks.
